Columbus, Ohio – On Sunday Governor John Kasich ordered that all flags be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the state in honor of the life and service of U.S. Senator John McCain, effective immediately through his interment.

Kasich’s order reads: “In honor of the life and service of U.S. Senator John McCain, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the state of Ohio, effective immediately through the day of interment.”

Kasich issued the following statement on Saturday: “Karen and I join the nation, and so many around the world, in mourning the death of Senator John McCain, an iconic American hero, patriot and statesman without compare.  Few have served their country so well or so long.  Having been privileged to call John a friend over many years, I will miss his straight talk and unfailing good humor, his steadfast resolve and absolute devotion to public service.  I will miss my old friend.”

McCain’s family announced on August 24, 2018, that he would no longer receive treatment for his cancer. The next day, at 16:28 MST (23:28 UTC), he died with his wife and family beside him at his home in Cornville, Arizona, four days shy of his 82nd birthday. He will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

Prior to his death, McCain requested that George W. Bush and Barack Obama eulogize him at his funeral, and asked that President Donald Trump not attend.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has the authority to appoint McCain’s interim replacement until a special election is held in 2020 to determine who will serve the remainder of McCain’s term, which ends in January 2023. Under Arizona law, the appointed replacement must be of the same party as McCain, a Republican. The potential appointees include McCain’s widow Cindy, former Senator Jon Kyl, and former Representatives Matt Salmonand John Shadegg.
