Brown announces Clermont County will receive $24,992 from the U.S. Department of the Interio

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that Clermont County will receive $24,992 from the U.S. Department of the Interior under the 2015 Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program. Local governments receive PILT payments from the federal government to offset the losses towns and cities incur from not being able to collect property taxes on federal lands within their boundaries. These payments help local governments fund vital community services including construction of public schools and roads, firefighting, and police protection.

“These federal funds will help ensure that local governments in Clermont County are also able to continue investing in their communities through critical community services,” said Brown.

    Pistol Holler Festival 2015

Pistol Holler has roots in many genres of music. From Country and Gospel, to Rock and Metal! Their paths have crossed many times as they have performed in the area. After years of crossing paths, they decided to come together to start something new. That “something new” is Pistol Holler. The name comes from an area around Manchester, Kentucky where their grandparents came from. A part of Appalachia that produced moonshine and feuds. This new generation of music makers produce energy and great music. That music pays homage to the roots and tradition of that place in Kentucky… Pistol Holler.

  • Loveland Magazine reporting on death of Sonny Kim

Loveland Magazine reporting on death of Sonny Kim

    Dear Loveland Magazine Readers,

Out of an abundance of caution and respect, Loveland Magazine is offering no more reporting on the death of Loveland resident, and Cincinnati police officer, Sonny Kim.

It seems rather obvious to us that the family has requested privacy.

We are not even sure where the “call” to line streets with supporters has come from, and may in fact have come from rumors or other media creating a media event for themselves to report on. We have contacted the funeral home handling things for the family and they tell us: “This is NOT open to the media via cameras or video cameras.  Cincinnati Police will be monitoring this very closely.”

The family has not reached out to us requesting publicity, and apparently that is the case with all other media as well.

We will do nothing further without the family’s expressed and proactive request. And, we will not reach out to the family during this time of requested privacy.

  • Best state showing for Track & Field in Loveland High School history

Best state showing for Track & Field in Loveland High School history

The Loveland High School (LHS) Boys Track & Field team placed in four of the five events they competed in during the state meet the weekend of June 6 and 7 in Columbus at the Division 1 Ohio High School Track & Field Championships. This is the best showing at the meet ever for LHS. The following athletes earned a medal:

    • Pole Vault – Senior Taylor Florence – 8th place, 14′
    • High Jump – Senior Giovanni Ricci – 5th place, 6’6″
    • 400 meter dash – Sophomore Zion Wynn – 8th place, 49.09
    • 110 meter High Hurdles – Senior Giovanni Ricci – 7th place,14.52

The 4 x 200 meter relay team narrowly missed making the finals finishing with the 10th best time in prelims. The Ohio State track has nine lanes so the top nine make it to finals. Although they missed finals they lowered their school record set the week before in the Dayton Regional meet. The new record of 1:28.50 was set by Seniors Carsen Davenport and Jordan Davis and Sophomores Vaughn Richter and Zion Wynn.

The team also set five other new marks during the season:
    1. 4 x 100 meter relay – 42.44 (FAT) – Carsen Davenport, Giovanni Ricci, Jordan Davis, Nate Slagel
    2. High Jump – 6′ 7″ – Giovanni Ricci
    3. 400 Meter Dash – 48.72 (FAT) – Zion Wynn
    4. Pole Vault – 14′ 8″ – Taylor Florence
    5. 110 Meter High Hurdles – 14.52 (FAT) – Giovanni Ricci

The team finished fourth in the Southwest Region prior to the state meet.

“It is a great accomplishment to make it to the state meet!” said LHS Boys Track & Field Head Coach Jim Vanatsky. “It is a greater accomplishment to make it on the podium. The success of our student-athletes is a testament to their hard work to maximize their talent, the great coaches we have and the tremendous support of their parents, our trainers, administrators and the Loveland Athletic Boosters!”

Councilmembers: Return of the Amazing Charity Race testimony to the positivity and hard work of a respectful and communicative City Council and Administration

    Dear Loveland Magazine Readers,

The Amazing Charity Race returned to Loveland this past Saturday with great energy and enthusiasm.  Although it rained, the poor weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the hundreds of contestants who ran, biked and competed in the twenty different events of sportsmanship and fun.

As representatives of Loveland City Council, we had the distinct pleasure of awarding medals to these valiant “warriors” – from the very first ones to cross the finish line to the final successful team. City Manager Dave Kennedy was also on hand along with many of our dedicated city staff members to ensure that the event, which ended ceremoniously in Loveland’s Nisbet Park , went off without a hitch.

The return of the Amazing Charity Race is a testimony to the positivity and hard work of a respectful and communicative City Council and Administration who are committed to working with the Race Board, volunteers and neighboring communities of Milford and Miami Township. We sincerely thank the Race Board for graciously welcoming Loveland back as a key participant in this signature charity event.

It’s amazing what can happen when people put their heads and hearts together to have fun, promote our local communities and raise money for worthwhile charities!

    Sincerely,

Mayor Linda Cox                                           Councilwoman Angie Settell

Vice Mayor Mark Fitzgerald                          Councilwoman Pam Gross

Video Interview: Olivia Frances: Songwriter, singer, storyteller and “Song Healer.”

    olivia-frances-sepia
Olivia Frances at the Front Street Cafe in New Richmond in April

    by David Miller,

When Olivia Frances ended her first tour, #SingleSteps Tour, it ended back in her home town of Cincinnati. I sat down with her a few days later to ask her about her songwriting and year-long excursion to Nashville which she describes as, “The town of dreams.”

We talked about how she goes about her writing and why so many describe the young musician as an old soul. She acquiesces to perhaps being a “Song Healer.”

I asked who her favorite female and male artists are now, and who’s hot now on the Nashville scene. Who should we be watching for?

She talks about the storytelling aspect of her songs and where she came upon the wisdom displayed by her lyrics.

The title track off her album, “Back to Happiness” won Best Pop Song of 2014 in the Ohio Music Awards. In addition, her original song, “Season’s Grow On” was placed in a documentary produced by an Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Melissa Godoy.

    June 24, 8 PM
Prayer Vigil for Charleston South Carolina and fallen Officer Sonny Kim
We will convene at the same time as our sisters and brothers did at ‘Mother Emanuel’ in South Carolina. We will study together in an interfaith bible study and engage in a short prayer service to honor and memorialize the victims of SC and also right here at home, fallen Officer Sonny Kim. We will come together because we know the pain of others. We will join together because we know all too well that this could have been our community. We will pray, study, and join hands because we want to be part of the solution.
