Ever since a mentally ill individual murdered my beautiful butterfly Dylan, 19, I have been working with Sandy Hook Promise on fixing our country’s broken mental health care system
Dear Loveland Magazine Readers,
This is really important: The bipartisan Mental Health Reform Act, for which Sandy Hook Promise has tirelessly advocated, is up for a big Senate committee vote tomorrow. But if we’re going to get this lifesaving legislation past this crucial point and to a full Senate vote, we need you to act right now.
In memory of my beautiful son Dylan, whose life might have been saved by the early intervention and mental health care measures in this bill, will you sign our petition urging the Senate to pass the Mental Health Reform Act now?
Ever since a mentally ill individual murdered my beautiful butterfly Dylan, 19 of his classmates and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary, I have been working with Sandy Hook Promise on fixing our country’s broken mental health care system.
We know that only a tiny percentage of people with mental illness will go on to hurt someone else – but when warning signs are missed, the consequences can be devastating: Families robbed of loved ones. Communities torn apart. An entire nation forced to confront the reality that an American first-grader can get on the school bus in the morning and never return home.
We can’t accept this as “the new normal.” We can take a significant step toward ending gun violence by promoting early interventions that help prevent mental illnesses from becoming serious, training teachers and law enforcement to identify people who need care sooner, and increasing access to better treatment in all of our communities for the millions of Americans suffering from mental illness.
And that’s exactly what the Mental Health Reform Act does.
Please take a moment to sign Sandy Hook Promise’s petition urging the Senate to pass it now.
With love,
Nicole Hockley (Dylan’s mom)
