  • Tigers bow to Rodney Hutchinson’s complete game 3-hit shutout

Tigers bow to Rodney Hutchinson’s complete game 3-hit shutout

by Dan Timmerman and Tom Sackett,

The Loveland Tigers lost to the Mason Comets in the sectional finals Thursday by a score of 6-0.

A much closer game than the final score would indicate. The game featured an intriguing subplot with the starting pitching match-up of North Carolina signee Rodney Hutchinson going for Mason against Loveland ace and Georgia Tech commit Jay Wilson for the Tigers.  But the Tigers were dealt an early blow when Wilson, who is also the 3 hole hitter for the Tigers, had to be taken out of the game with an elbow injury in the bottom of the 1st, only 4 pitches into the game.  Trent Spikes, who has arguably been Loveland’s best statistical pitcher this year, received the early relief call and held the Comets in check through 5 innings with the help from the Tiger defense.  However the game’s runs all came in the Mason 6th highlighted by a successful suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded and a two out three run double that effectively put the game out of reach.

Meanwhile Mason pitcher Rodney Hutchinson was masterful in a complete game shutout yielding only 3 hits without a walk in what was the best pitching performance the Tigers faced all year.

    Hitting: Waddell 1-3; Beran 1-3; Lakes 1-3, 2B

This marked the final game for Loveland seniors Jacob Albin, Lucas Bashardoust, Adam Beran, Josh Meszaros, Zach Roberts, Chris Sackett and Jacob Timmerman who lead the 2015 squad to an outstanding 23-7 record.

The Tigers look toward the 2016 season with a strong nucleus featuring 6 returning starters including 3 of their top pitchers and 3 of their top hitters from the 2015 roster.

  • Tim Weisgerber makes college commitment

    Tim Weisgerber makes college commitment

weisgerber-tall_1The Southern Tier Xpress, members of the NA3HL, have announced that team captain Tim Weisgerber, from Loveland has committed to play hockey in the ACHA Division I for the Mercyhurst Lakers.
“We feel Tim has made an outstanding choice to not only continue playing hockey for such a first-rate program, but the education he will receive from Mercyhurst is second to none”, states Xpress GM Brian Cersosimo. “The way Coach McKinnon develops the student-athlete at the college level makes this an even better choice for Tim,” Cersosimo added.
Weisgerber, 21, is a veteran of four NA3HL season, most recently with the Xpress. This past season, he had 21 points in 44 regular season games and appeared in both Xpress playoff games. In his NA3HL career he played 156 career games and recorded 36 career points.
“We are very excited to add Tim to our program,” says Mercyhurst Head Coach Tom McKinnon. “Tim has all three intangibles that we look for in recruiting student-athletes: great character, a solid work ethic and being a coachable young man. Tim will add depth on D, and in our opinion can come in and contribute immediately at the collegiate level”.
“With our programs being so close (approx. 40 minutes apart), we are looking to build a solid relationship between Mercyhurst and the Xpress in order to provide Xpress players a chance to continue their playing careers and education”, McKinnon states.

  • Rule prohibiting excessive contact in H.S. basketball has been expanded

Rule prohibiting excessive contact in H.S. basketball has been expanded

Other rule and officiating changes announced

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The rule prohibiting excessive contact in high school basketball has been expanded to include all ball-handlers on the court, include post players.

This revision in Rule 10-6-12 and a new signal for officials were recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its April 20-22 meeting in Indianapolis. Both changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Last year, the rules committee added Article 12 to Rule 10-6 in an effort to eliminate excessive contact on ball-handlers and dribblers outside of the lane area. Beginning next season, excessive contact on any ball-handler will be a violation of the rules.

The new language states that “a player becomes a ball-handler when he/she receives the ball. This would include a player in a post position.”

The acts that constitute a foul when committed against a ball-handler are a) placing two hands on the player, b) placing an extended arm bar on the player, c) placing and keeping a hand on the player and d) contacting the player more than once with the same hand or alternating hands.

“The current rule covers the ball-handler/dribbler situations but ignores the action that goes on in the post area with the hands, arm bars, etc.,” said Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and officials. “The additional language will clarify that the illegal acts should be ruled for every position on the floor.”

The rules committee also approved a new signal to be used after a basket is made and when there is a stoppage in play. The signal will be used by officials to indicate that the team in- bounding the ball may run the baseline. This signal would be used to restart play when a time- out is called or an injury occurs after a made basket.

In addition to these changes, the Basketball Rules Committee approved four points of emphasis for the 2015-16 season: post play, rebounding, protecting the free-throw shooter and NFHS mechanics and signals.

The committee noted that new information has been added to the rules book that addresses cleaning up post play and urged fouls to be called when violations occur. In addition, the committee emphasized that illegal tactics related to rebounding should be called since these violations are among the leading causes of injury in high school basketball.

Protecting the free-throw shooter is another area of emphasis for next season. The committee noted that the rule change last year allowing a player occupying a marked lane space to enter the lane on the release of the ball by the free thrower calls for added protection of the free-throw shooter.

The final point of emphasis concerns the use of NFHS mechanics and signals.

“Communication is vital to the game of basketball, to the officials and all others involved in the game,” Wynns said. “It is essential for officials to master and use only the NFHS-approved mechanics and signals.”

The rules committee also devoted significant time to updating the NFHS 2015-17 Basketball Officials Manual. Wynns said the revised publication will be improved and expanded to include diagrams helpful to new officials as well as the more experienced ones.

A complete listing of the basketball rules changes is available on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org. Click on “Activities & Sports” at the top of the home page, and select “Basketball.”

  • Loveland improves to 17-5 overall

    Loveland improves to 17-5 overall

by Dan Timmerman and Tom Sackett,

Game 21 – Saturday May 2 Loveland vs. Shaker Heights, Game 22 – Sunday May 3 vs. Miamisburg

Marge Schott Stadium at the University of Cincinnati

Trent Spikes and Jacob Timmerman each pitched complete game shutouts in leading the Tigers to weekend victories over Shaker Heights, 10-0 on Saturday, and Miamisburg, 6-0 on Sunday, in games played at Marge Schott Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.

In Saturday’s game the Tigers got on the board in the 3rd after Chris Dombroski reach on an error, was then forced at second on a fielder’s choice by Zach Roberts and the bases became loaded on a single by Luke Waddell and a walk to Josh Meszaros.  Colton Lakes then found the gap in right-center field for a triple, scoring all 3 runners.  In the 4th Dombroski walked and was brought home by an RBI double by Roberts for a 4-0 lead. The Tigers broke the game wide open in the 6th sending 11 batters to the plate. Dombroski singled and Roberts reached on a fielder’s choice. Meszaros then tripled scoring Roberts and the hit parade was on: Jay Wilson doubled to score Meszaros, Lakes singled, Zach Chapman had a pinch hit to score Wilson, Adam Beran singled, Blake Schlesner had a pinch hit to score Lakes and Chapman and finally Beran scored as Dombroski reached base on a error.

On Sunday the Tigers offense got going in the 1st on a leadoff single by Luke Waddell who came around to score on a Josh Meszaros double, who just killed the ball all weekend, with Meszaros taking third on the throw to the plate.  Jay Wilson then hit a towering fly ball to deep center to score Meszaros. Loveland scored 2 more in the 3rd starting with a walk to Waddell and a single by Meszaros.  A single by Wilson plated Waddell and a single by Colton Lakes did the same for Meszaros. The Tigers got another run in the 5th with Blake Schlesner scoring on a wild pitch from 3rd after Miamisburg had loaded the bases on 3 walks.  The scoring concluded in the 7th as Cade Woolston singled, stole 2nd and scored on a single by Waddell.
