A beloved fairy tale gets a different ending when one class combines science, technology, engineering and math with creative writing!

LPS second-grade students designed parachutes as part of a STEM lesson based on the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk.

Loveland, Ohio – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lessons were a bit magical in Jennifer Hiltonā€™s second grade class at Loveland Primary School (LPS). The class used Jack and the Beanstalk to design parachutes to help ā€œJackā€ get safely back down to the ground.

ā€œThis was an excellent incorporation of language arts with our STEM studies,ā€ said Hilton. ā€œOur students were tasked with designing parachutes using household supplies, and then they wrote a story about the experience.ā€

A-plus for creative thinking?
