Loveland, Ohio – Sometimes classroom innovation comes rolling up to the school building with the aroma of Venezuelan cuisine.
That was the scene at Loveland Middle School (LMS) when Spanish Teacher Nick Smith ordered up an authentic lesson in Spanish by inviting the food truck Empanadas Aqui to the building for his students to sharpen their Spanish communication skills during a food unit lesson.
“Studies have shown that students learn best when presented with a situation where they use vocabulary in context,” said Smith. “In this situation our students have the opportunity to practice what they have learned in class by ordering from the food truck in Spanish. I also took the time to visit the tables where students were eating to ask them common questions that a server may ask, and they responded in Spanish.”
“This is a perfect example of #TigerInnovation in action in our classrooms,” said LMS Principal Chris Burke. “This was an excellent idea on the part of Mr. Smith to create an exciting adventure for our students to not only learn the language, but to also experience some of the culture. I give this effort an A-plus.”
