A message from the Council on Aging for Southwestern Ohio (Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton and Warren counties.)
Are you helping an older loved-one with housekeeping, grocery shopping, errands, meal preparation, transportation, paperwork, or personal care? If so, you are a caregiver.
As the Area Agency on Aging for southwestern Ohio (Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton and Warren counties), Council on Aging is responsible for planning, coordinating and administering local, state and federally funded programs and services for older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers in our region.
For family caregivers, the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) is a lifeline. NFCSP funds a range of supports that assist family and informal caregivers to care for their loved ones at home for as long as possible.
Council on Aging combines this funding with state Medicaid funds and county senior service tax levies to provide support, education and respite to caregivers in our region. Most of this funding goes to local organizations that contract with Council on Aging to provide caregiver support services, including the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Cincinnati Chapter, Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio, Jewish Family Service, and others.
Additionally, Council on Aging’s free caregiver support program provides one-on-one support for family and volunteer caregivers. The focus is on the caregiver, helping them manage their responsibilities, physical health and emotions.
For caregivers who need to work, have other responsibilities, or just need a break, Council on Aging’s home and community-based care programs can help fill gaps in care to ensure your loved-one is safe.
Staff in our Aging and Disability Resource Center are available to talk with you about your unique situation. They may screen and refer you to one of Council on Aging’s programs, share information and resources to meet your needs, or connect you with another resource in our community.
The most important thing to realize is that by taking care of yourself and connecting to local resources, you can be a better caregiver to your loved-one.
