Loveland, Ohio – Linda Cox resigned her council seat on January 31 with two-years left to serve. Council will meet in a special session on Tuesday, February 16 at 6:30 PM to review nominations and vote on her replacement.

loveland-sweetsCouncil has thirty days to fill the vacant seat. If the six members fail to agree on a selection within thirty-days, Mayor Mark Fitzgerald can make the appointment. The term would will be until December 4, 2017. The annual salary is $5,400. Members have a $200 expense allowance.

The meeting will be the Media Center at Loveland High School. Council will then will have a Strategic Planning Session.

You must be an Elector of the City and you must have resided in the City for one year to be eligible to serve. Also, according to the Ohio Revised Code, a council member “…shall not hold any other public office, except that of notary public or member of the state militia, and shall not be interested in any contract with the city, and no such member may hold employment with said city.”

Council duties from the City Charter:

It will be Loveland City Council’s continuing mission to promote economic growth and the health, safety and welfare of residents within the city while protecting our historic and natural assets. Council is charged with anticipating, listening to, understanding and addressing residents’ needs and concerns and communicate these to the city administration and ensuring they are adequately addressed.

The Loveland CityCouncil shall provide policy direction, oversight and contribute helpful proposals to the city administration to ensure that Loveland residents are receiving unsurpassed local government services congruent with the tax base. Furthermore, Councilwill annually pass a budget that makes responsible use of the residents’ tax dollars with a goal of keeping the rate of services and taxes constant or decreased, if at all possible.

As leaders of the community, City Council as a body and as individual members must lead by example and as such, shall hold themselves to the highest professional and ethical standards at all times. Council members are expected to be honorable and courteous while conducting city business and while campaigning. Council members are expected to always observe and not conflict with: local, state and federal statutes, the City charter and the constitutions of the State of Ohio and the United States of America. Members who fail to observe council rules may be subject to sanctions by Council as a whole. Council may engage in fact finding, inquiry, admonishment and suspension and in the rarest instances, expulsion of members who show consistent or severe disregard for council.
