Loveland Chamber awards district Sustainability Award
Loveland, Ohio – November was a month to remember for the Loveland City School District’s sustainability efforts. Tuesday, Nov. 17, Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste named Loveland High School (LHS) Teacher Tracy Burge the Outstanding Recycling Educator, and, in addition, awarded the district a $10,000 grant. Thursday, Nov. 19, the Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce recognized the district by presenting the Sustainability Award to Loveland Superintendent Chad Hilliker at the Annual Dinner.
“Thank you for recognizing one of our teachers, because it is really her name that has become synonymous with sustainability,” said Superintendent Hilliker as he addressed the gathering of business leaders. “When you hear the name Tracy Burge you think: passion, energy, and – perhaps most importantly for our students – inspiration. On behalf of the Loveland City School District, I thank Tracy for her dedication, and on behalf of Tracy, I thank the Chamber for this recognition.”
Since 2009, when Burge implemented the first recycling program at Loveland High School, she has led her Environmental Class in the following achievements:
- Reduced waste generated by 1500 students to only 2 bags of garbage each day in the LHS cafeteria
- Incorporated commercial composting at both Loveland Middle School and Loveland Intermediate School
- Sustained a zero waste state in the cafeterias at LHS, LMS and LIS
- Implemented recycling at sports venues
- The US Department of Education named LHS a Green Ribbon School in 2012
