Pennies for Patients turns into thousands of dollars donated
Loveland, Ohio – Loveland Middle School (LMS) salutes the LMS Student Council for raising $4,011 to donate to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Greater Cincinnati Pennies for Patients fundraiser.
“We donated $2,100 last year so we were well over our goal,” said LMS Teacher Katie Rose, who co-sponsors the LMS Student Council with Trisha Murray. “The LMS Student Council organized several events to reach this goal, and I was thrilled to incorporate a language arts lesson as part of the effort. My language arts students wrote persuasive letters to businesses in the community asking for a donation to be used as a raffle prize for the fundraiser.
“The lesson was to ask for something that could be used to ‘pay it forward’ and to be selfless in receiving something and using it for a greater cause. Students learned it is okay to ask and be grateful to receive. It was really cool to see the looks on their faces when they opened the response letters to see the donations.”
Other fundraising activities included a visit by Kona Ice, classroom donations, a “Pie a Teacher” event, half-court shot, selling Hawaiian leis for spirit week, and selling popcorn during study time.
“This is an annual event for our students,” said LMS Principal Chris Burke. “It is a positive competition for our students – and we are thrilled at the success they achieved. It was a great opportunity to learn and give to a worthy cause.”
“This was our best effort to date, and we couldn’t be more proud of this demonstration of Tiger pride, spirit, and generosity,” said Rose.
