    Preschool registration begins today

    Loveland, Ohio – Applications for the 2023-24 LECC Preschool program will be available beginning today, December 5 at Preschool Application 2023-24 / Home (lovelandschools.org).

    Applications are due no later than January 13, 2023, and should be turned in directly to Penny Dippold at the Loveland Early Childhood Center.

    The completed application can be mailed (6740 Loveland-Miamiville Rd., Loveland, Ohio 45140), faxed (513-677-7960), or emailed to dippolpe@lovelandschools.org.

    Parents will be notified if their child is selected for the program by early February 2023.

    Apply Now – School district appointee to Loveland Planning and Zoning Commission

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District Board of Education is seeking a person to be appointed to the City of Loveland Planning and Zoning Commission. The successful candidate would serve as a City of Loveland Planning and Zoning Commission member, attend necessary meetings, and communicate with the Board of Education.

    Those interested in serving must be a resident of the City of Loveland for at least one year before their appointment to the Commission. Candidates should submit a resume and a brief narrative explaining why they would like to serve.

    Documents can be submitted via email to treasurer@lovelandschools.org or delivered to the Board of Education offices during regular business hours. All documents should be received by noon on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

    Loveland Charter

    SECTION 9.03 PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION.
    There shall be a City Planning and Zoning Commission consisting of five (5) members.
    One (1) member shall be a member of Council, to be selected by Council. One (1) member shall
    be selected by the Board of Education who may or may not be a member of the Board. Council
    shall select three (3) members who are not Council members. Members of the Commission shall
    be residents of the City for at least one year prior to their appointment. If the Board of Education
    and/or the Council shall fail in these appointed duties, for a period of forty-five (45) days, after a
    vacancy occurs, the Mayor shall make such appointments. The terms of office of a Commission
    member, who is also a member of Council shall be concurrent. The remaining four (4) members
    shall be appointed to staggered and overlapping terms of three (3) years each. Any incumbents, as
    of this Charter’s adoption, shall serve out their respective unexpired terms.

    SECTION 9.03a POWERS AND DUTIES OF PLANNING AND ZONING
    COMMISSION.
    The Commission shall act as the City’s platting commission and shall provide for planning
    and regulations covering the platting of all lands controlled by the City and may require an official
    map of such territories to be made. The Commission shall carry out the City planning functions,
    which includes preparing a master plan, to be updated a minimum of every ten (10) years, and
    investigate, and make such reports and recommendations relating to planning and zoning, and the
    physical development of the City; and shall have all the powers granted to and shall perform all
    the duties imposed on planning commissions by Ohio law, and such other powers and duties as
    established by Council by ordinance. Meetings of the Commission shall be held as needed but not
    less than every two (2) months.

    Loveland Code of Ordinances

    1109.03 RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION.

       (a)    The Planning and Zoning Commission shall have the following responsibilities and powers as they relate to this Zoning Code:

          (1)   Initiate advisable official zoning, district map changes, or changes in the text of the Zoning Code where same will promote the best interest of the public in general through recommendation to the City Council.

          (2)    Review all proposed amendments to the text of this Zoning Code and the official zoning district map and make recommendations to the City Council.

          (3)    Review all Special Planning District applications and make recommendations to the City Council as provided in this Zoning Code.

          (4)   Review all conditional uses as identified in the respective zoning districts according to provisions and criteria stated in this Zoning Code.

          (5)   Carry on a continuous review of the effectiveness and appropriateness of this Zoning Code and recommend such changes or amendments as it feels would be appropriate.

          (6)   Review and act on site plans pursuant to Section 1111.09.

       (b)   The Planning and Zoning Commission shall also have the responsibilities as set forth in the City Charter.

  • $25 million grant program for charitable organizations

    $25 million grant program for charitable organizations

    The state has announced a $25 million grant program to distribute federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act monies to charitable organizations. Applications for the program, which will be administered through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, must be submitted prior to Nov. 27.  

    The discretionary grants will be distributed to 501(c)(3) organizations that serve low-income Ohioans and have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    In addition to the types of services provided by the applicant organizations, consideration will also be given to unemployment charges paid by the charity, as well as other criteria. Grantees will be notified of their approval or denial by Dec. 11 and will receive funds by Dec. 21.

    Wenstrup now accepting applications for U.S. Service Academies for Class of 2025

    As a Member of Congress, I have the privilege of nominating exceptional young people for admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy, known collectively as the U.S. Service Academies.  My office also works with students interested in the Coast Guard Academy. The U.S. Service Academies offer opportunities for motivated young men and women to serve their country while receiving an excellent education and developing valuable leadership skills.  In place of tuition, the Academies require military service after graduation.

    Pathway to an Academy Nomination

    Admission to the U.S. Service Academies is highly competitive and selective, as is the process of securing a nomination. Here are some things to consider on your pathway to a nomination and, ultimately, admission to an Academy:

    Academic Achievement:

    The U.S. Military Academies are looking for candidates who have a strong record of academic achievement. Your high school GPA and class rank are important indicators of your academic record, as are the kinds of courses you take. Consider taking more challenging courses (like AP/Honors classes, math and science classes, etc.) whenever possible.

    Leadership and Service:

    Candidates for the Academies must demonstrate outstanding leadership both in and outside of the classroom. Participating in extracurricular activities like athletics, clubs, and community service organizations can help you develop and hone your leadership skills.

    Summer Programs:

    The U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Naval Academy each offer a variety of summer programs for prospective applicants. Participating in one or more of these programs is a great way to become acquainted with life at the Academies. Click on the links below to learn more about these opportunities.

    Applying for an Academy Nomination

    To be considered for a nomination to one of the United States Service Academies for the graduating class of 2025, your application must be received by the Cincinnati District Office by 5:00 p.m. on September 25th, 2020.  Your completed file must contain the following:

    1.         Completed Application Form

    2.         High School Transcript – Transcript must include all course work, GPA, and class rank.

    3.         Standardized Test Scores – Please provide official scores from the ACT or SAT, or both, as reflected on a school transcript or in official documentation from ACT or SAT.

    4.         High School Recommendation – Please provide a letter of recommendation written by your Guidance Counselor or High School Principal.

    5.         Letters of Recommendation – Please provide 2 additional letters of recommendation.

    6.         Community & School Activity List – Please list all school, athletic, and community activities and other significant accomplishments/awards.

    7.         Essay – Please provide an essay (300 words or less) outlining why you want to attend a United States Service Academy and then serve in the military as a commissioned officer.

    8.         Interview – All applicants will be required to attend an interview session conducted by our Academy Panel.  Dates, times, and locations will be determined at a later date.

    9.         Photograph – Please provide a current 5×7 photograph.

    10.       Deadline – Send the above information by September 25, 2020.

    The nomination materials referenced above are SEPARATE AND DISTINCT from the application materials you must submit directly to the Academies.

     BROWN, PORTMAN INVITE OHIOANS TO APPLY FOR NOMINATION TO U.S. SERVICE ACADEMIES

    Eligible Students May Apply for the U.S. Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, and Military Academy at West Point

    Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) are encouraging Ohioans interested in 2020 admission to U.S. Military Service Academies to apply to each senator’s office for a congressional nomination.

    “Ohio’s students have the integrity, courage, and knowledge needed to enroll in our nation’s prestigious military academies and I am honored to nominate students for this high honor,” said Brown. “These academies develop the next generation of leaders who will serve our country as military officers and national leaders.”

    “As a United States Senator, it is an honor and privilege every year to nominate a number of Ohio’s top young achievers for entry into one of our nation’s service academies,” said Portman. “Our nation has never had to look further than the Buckeye State to find those individuals who exhibit the sterling qualities of leadership, daring, and the sense of adventure needed to turn their biggest dreams into reality, and to rise to any occasion.”

    Each year, Brown and Portman nominate up to 10 students for each service academy: the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

    Interested students who meet the eligibility requirements should send their completed application packet to Brown’s Cleveland office and Portman’s Columbus office no later than September 20, 2019. The application process is time-intensive. Applicants should plan well in advance.

    Loveland Stage Company offering 2 scholarships in the spring of 2019

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland Stage Company will be presenting 2 scholarships in the spring of 2019. The first scholarship is the annual Loveland Stage Company Creative Arts Scholarship of $1000, which is awarded to a graduating high school senior who is pursuing a study in the creative arts in college. Students who live in Loveland or are graduating from Loveland High School or whose families are members of the Loveland Stage Company qualify to apply for the scholarship.

    The second scholarship, the $1000 Jacqueline Knapp Memorial Scholarship, is offered to both graduating high school students and students already enrolled in college and attending school in the fall of 2019. Applicants must have participated in at least one Loveland Stage Company production in a technical/backstage/supporting role.

    Information and applications for both scholarships can be found on the Loveland Stage Company website. Both are due by Sunday March 10, 2019.

    National awards program seeking Ohio’s TOP YOUTH VOLUNTEERS of 2019

    Today through November 6, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is looking for Ohio’s top youth volunteers of the year.

    Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months. The application is available at http://spirit.prudential.com and www.nassp.org/spirit.

    The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), was created in 1995 to recognize the exemplary volunteer work of middle level and high school students. The awards have been granted annually for the past 23 years on the local, state and national level.

    “After more than two decades of honoring young volunteers, we know that students are a powerful force for good,” said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld. “We shine a spotlight on their service in hopes that others will be inspired to follow their example.”

    Ohio’s top youth volunteers of 2018 were Bennett Heyn, 18, of Cincinnati, who launched a cell phone recycling campaign in his community to help preserve gorilla habitats in Africa, keep harmful chemicals out of landfills, and show people that even simple steps can make a difference in preserving the environment, and Chaina Nafziger, 12, of Archbold, who organized a bake sale with a friend at her church and raised $1,400 for two charities that assist orphans in Haiti.     How to Apply

    To apply for a 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Award, students and certifiers must complete the following steps:

    Students complete the online application by November 6, 2018. Then, students submit the application for certification to their principal or head of a local participating organization.

    Certifiers review all applications for their school or organization, then select a Local Honoree to nominate for state-level judging by November 16, 2018.

    Applications can be certified by a middle or high school principal or head of a Girl Scout council, county 4-H organization, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or an affiliate of Points of Light’s HandsOn Network. (Students can request a paper application by calling 855-670-4787.)

    The 2019 Awards Program

    On February 5, 2019, the top middle level and high school volunteer from each state and the District of Columbia will be named State Honorees. They will receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., with a parent or guardian for four days of recognition events from May 4-7, 2019.

    In Washington, a distinguished national selection committee will name 10 of the 102 State Honorees as America’s top youth volunteers of the year. These National Honorees will receive additional awards of $5,000, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations, and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

    Several Distinguished Finalists in each state will receive bronze medallions, and runners-up will receive Certificates of Excellence. Local Honorees selected by schools and participating organizations for state-level judging will be presented with Certificates of Achievement; they will also receive President’s Volunteer Service Awards if they have served the minimum number of volunteer hours to qualify (26 hours for age 10 and younger, 50 hours for ages 11-15 and 100 hours for older students).

    “It’s an honor to recognize middle level and high school students making a difference through volunteer service,” said JoAnn Bartoletti, executive director of NASSP. “We look forward to another year of celebrating the impact, initiative and compassion of young volunteers.”
