  • Application process for open school board seat re-opens

Application process for open school board seat re-opens

Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland School Board has been functioning with only four members since Kevin Dougherty resigned effective June 30. As previously reported the board of education appointed Dr. Brad Goldie on July 17 to the unexpired term but later had to rescind their vote. (School Board calls special meeting to rescind appointment of new member)

Then, because, of the circumstances of the Board missing the deadline to re-vote and re-affirm Goldie’s appointment, Ohio Law requires the decision to now be made by the Hamilton County Probate Court. That court has now requested that persons interested in being appointed apply directly to the court administrator.

Applications are due by September 1, however, the administrator has not responded to Loveland Magazine’s phone request inquiring about when the Probate Court intends to make the appointment.

The circumstance arose after the Board’s meeting of July 17 when they met in an open session to interview prospective candidates via phone calls, and voted to appoint Goldie, but later learned that all of the doors to the building were locked and the public could not attend the meeting. After receiving advice from their lawyer that if the doors were indeed locked the meeting was a violation of Ohio’s open meetings law the Board then met on July 26 and rescinded the vote to appoint Goldie.

The District’s attorney then called the Hamilton County Probate Court informing it what had happened and that the time allowance for the Board to make the appointment had passed. The District has received no further communication from the court except that they were requested to post the new application process on the District website, which they did.

The Board also communicated to the court that they have reaffirmed their support for Dr. Goldie to fill the unexpired term.

Meanwhile on July 18, attorney Curt Hartman on behalf of a client made a public records request for “all video or audiovisual recordings within the interior and the exterior of the Board Administrative Offices from July 17, 2023, from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm all video footage from inside and outside cameras at the building.” There is no indication that Hartman has followed up with legal action since receiving the files which were mailed to him on a flash drive.

  • Loveland area students can apply now for Ohio Student Safety Advisory Council

Loveland area students can apply now for Ohio Student Safety Advisory Council

David Miller is the Editor and Publisher of Loveland Magazine
    by David Miller

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today announced the creation of the new Ohio Student Safety Advisory Council within the Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC). The student-led Council will work to identify school safety concerns and develop innovative solutions to address them. “School safety programs are designed to protect students, so it’s important that students are given the opportunity to be a part of the conversation,” said Governor DeWine. “Involving them in the process of identifying safety concerns and creating solutions will provide Ohioans with a new and important perspective for violence prevention.”  Findings from the student-based council meetings will be delivered to the Governor’s Ohio School Safety Working Group to generate statewide solutions and supports.

“Being a member of this statewide council will enable students to ensure their voice is heard when it comes to school safety,” Ohio Department of Public Safety Director Tom Stickrath said. “They will learn more about student safety-related issues and help devise effective peer-driven solutions.”

To be eligible for the Council, students must:

    • Be entering grade 11 for the 2022-2023 school year.
    • Submit a completed application and nomination letter, which must be submitted together to OhioSchoolSafetyCenter@dps.ohio.gov prior to the May 6, 2022 deadline to be considered.
    • Agree to serve a one-year term and attend monthly virtual meetings and one in-person meeting in Columbus.

Two students from each of the five school safety center regions will be selected for the Council.

Students will have the opportunity to be involved in additional events both in-person and remotely throughout their term. Those selected should plan on spending no fewer than 10 hours per month on group activities/work.

Council members will develop strategies to encourage their peers to actively engage in maintaining a safe school environment and will be an advocate for students’ overall well-being. Students will work directly with the regional school safety liaisons from the OSSC to organize events, focus groups, and trainings in their regions to help highlight student success and safety best practices at various schools. These members will also act as a sounding board for the Governor’s Ohio School Safety Working Group and OSSC on student marketing campaigns and projects to ensure a student voice is represented.

Candidates chosen to move forward with the process will be asked to attend a virtual interview. The OSSC plans to announce the student council member selections at the end
    of May.

Additional information can be found on the OSSC website.

Wenstrup now accepting applications for U.S. Service Academies for Class of 2025

From the office of Ohio Congressman Brad Wenstrup:

As a Member of Congress, I have the privilege of nominating exceptional young people for admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy, known collectively as the U.S. Service Academies.  My office also works with students interested in the Coast Guard Academy. The U.S. Service Academies offer opportunities for motivated young men and women to serve their country while receiving an excellent education and developing valuable leadership skills.  In place of tuition, the Academies require military service after graduation.

If you’re interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy, check out the resources below. If you have any questions, please contact Annie Cummins in my Cincinnati District Office: (513) 474-7777.

    Pathway to an Academy Nomination

Admission to the U.S. Service Academies is highly competitive and selective, as is the process of securing a nomination. Here are some things to consider on your pathway to a nomination and, ultimately, admission to an Academy:

    Academic Achievement:

The U.S. Military Academies are looking for candidates who have a strong record of academic achievement. Your high school GPA and class rank are important indicators of your academic record, as are the kinds of courses you take. Consider taking more challenging courses (like AP/Honors classes, math and science classes, etc.) whenever possible.

    Leadership and Service:

Candidates for the Academies must demonstrate outstanding leadership both in and outside of the classroom. Participating in extracurricular activities like athletics, clubs, and community service organizations can help you develop and hone your leadership skills.

    Summer Programs:

The U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Naval Academy each offer a variety of summer programs for prospective applicants. Participating in one or more of these programs is a great way to become acquainted with life at the Academies. Click on the links below to learn more about these opportunities.
