Loveland, Ohio – Local Downtown Loveland restaurants participated in the inaugural Oktoberfest magic last year by providing traditional German food specials and hosting the prelims of the Stein Hoisting a.k.a “The Masskrugen Challenge!”
On FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 from 4 PM – 10 PM and Saturday September 24 from 4 PM – 10 PM the festivities will return for 2022.
Last year the streets of Loveland were filled with people wearing their finest German Lederhosen or Dirndl’s when Bishop’s Quarter’s held a costume competition for those wanting to show off their attire!
The Downtown Loveland area transformed into a place filled with German food, drinks, and activities, Nisbet Park located right off the Loveland Bike Trail successfully turned into a traditional Biergarten!
The Wiener Dog Race was the star of the festival as 15 Wiener Dogs competed for a Tara’s Pet Boutique Gift Card in front of a sea of people.
One of the most traditional Oktoberfest moments was the Keg Procession that then led into the Tapping of the Keg!
Loveland, Ohio – Join me in supporting Adam Ploof and CancerFree KIDS for the 100 Mile Challenge – Corporate Competition, presented by Interlink Cloud Advisors.
I’ve decided to spotlight my friend Adam Ploof who is also the boyfriend of my Loveland Magazine partner, Cassie Mattia. I was excited Monday afternoon when Adam’s FaceBook post popped up and I read that he has challenged himself to walk 100 miles to raise money for childhood cancer research. When you personally know the person who challenged themself to walk 100 miles in 1 month, it suddenly becomes less aloof or something. BTW, I also know their furbabies, Dean and Nala quite well and they will be participating.
During September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Adam and his colleagues from Loveland-based, Oasis Turf & Tree will each be striving to complete 100 miles of activity to each raise at least $100 for CancerFree KIDS to fund life-saving childhood cancer research. If Oasis Turf & Tree wins the Corporate Competition, they will have a 2022 CancerFree KIDS Research Grant named in their honor! I hope you will join us in our efforts to help Adam reach his goal of $500.
Adam told me he took on the challenge, “Just to raise awareness for the cause.” He said that “anything inside and outside of work except for the milage he accumulates on the machines he rides on at work, counts. “My phone only catches on for walking distances, running, or cycling. Walking, cycling, kayaking. You name it as long as it’s physical exercise could count though. Cassie and I always take both our dogs Dean and Nala on walks every day, so the furbabies will be part of the competition too.”
Oasis Turf & Tree contributes to greater causes each year by doing such things as regular trips to the Ronald McDonald House for the chance to spend the day preparing meals for families. Oasis celebrates Black History Month, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Veterans Day, and National First Responders Day.
This September, about 1,290 kids in the US will be diagnosed with pediatric cancer. They join thousands of others who are currently in treatment and hundreds of thousands more who previously battled cancer. The 100 Mile Challenge exists to “celebrate the survivors, remember those for whom a cure did not come soon enough, and give hope to kids currently undergoing treatment by funding the very best research to improve treatment options for all kids diagnosed with cancer, now and in the future.”
If you are able to donate, please click the “Donate” button below. I have also included the CancerFree KIDS address if you are more comfortable sending a check. I greatly appreciate any amount you are able to give to help Adam pass his goal!
Cassie makes this ask, “Please support my wonderful boyfriend Adam Ploof as he raises money for CancerFree KIDS! I love that we both are passionate about our community and organizations that deserve all the care and support they can get!”
Nala, Adam, Cassie, and Dean
Please make checks payable to CancerFree KIDS and send to CancerFree KIDS PO BOX 575, Loveland, OH 45140. Write “Adam Ploof” on the memo line to credit your donation to his fundraising page
Thank you in advance for supporting Adam and Oasis Turf & Tree in funding life-saving childhood cancer research!
CancerFree KIDS works every day to find gentler and more effective treatments for kids with cancer by funding research that would otherwise go unfunded. They do this because…
Childhood cancer is not profitable meaning almost no investment from industry and only 4% of federal cancer research dollars are allocated to pediatrics.
Cancer is the #1 killer of children by disease and two-thirds of children who do survive go on to have chronic health issues because of their treatments.
To launch gentler and more effective treatments for children. As of now there are 660 FDA approved cancer drugs for adults and only 35 approved for children.

The studies intend to find cures and gentler treatments to help children better cope with the pains and challenges of fighting cancer. In most cases, this research would go unfunded without the support of CancerFree KIDS.

Every Dollar Spent Will Help Find a Cure for Childhood Cancer
Loveland, Ohio – On Wednesday, March 31, Jersey Mike’s Subs is closing out its ‘Month of Giving’ fundraising campaign with its 11th annual ‘Day of Giving’ to support the Loveland-based non-profit, CancerFree KIDS.
For one day only, 23 Tri-State Jersey Mike’s locations will donate 100 percent of their proceeds to help fund critical childhood cancer research.
That means that every dollar spent on any fresh-sliced or fresh-grilled sub, side, drink, or dessert will go directly to CancerFree KIDS.
“This effort really goes back to our belief that Jersey Mike’s can make a difference at the same time as we make a sub sandwich,” says Larry Rover, Cincinnati Area Director, Jersey Mike’s Subs. “We are passionate about giving back to the community and pleased to help further CancerFree KIDS’ important work.”
The ‘Month of Giving’ is a campaign that Jersey Mike’s executes in each of its markets and supports 200 nonprofit organizations across the country. This is the sixth year that Cincinnati-area Jersey Mike’s locations have supported CancerFree KIDS, raising more than $515,000 to support research that would otherwise go unfunded.
CancerFree KIDS is a non-profit that serves as a catalyst for promising research.
The organization issues seed grants funding innovative studies to find gentler treatments and cures for children with cancer. Prior ‘Day of Giving’ fundraisers have helped support five Jersey Mike’s Research Grants to fund research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
“With this campaign, when you buy a sub, you’re helping us get one step closer to a cure,” says Jill Brinck, executive director, CancerFree KIDS. “Jersey Mike’s is a tremendous partner and they’re already investing in important medical studies happening right here in Cincinnati. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
Loveland, Ohio – Nine different teams were formed at Loveland High School in an effort to defeat childhood cancer: Cancer Dancers, Fighting Tigers, Full Send, Kickout Cancer, King Julian, Taffy’s Tots, The Raisas’, Tigers Against Cancer, and Tigers for the Fight.
More than 650 Tri-State high school students and sponsors joined forces to raise $232,000 as part of CancerFree KIDS’ ninth annual Night for the Fight fundraising effort. This year’s event transformed into a virtual, one-week competition between March 6 – 13 to accommodate social distancing and other COVID-19 safety precautions. Organizers say this year’s event was a “rousing” success.
“Our students came through for us once again, and we are astounded by their creativity and commitment to childhood cancer research, even when the current pandemic climate forced a big change,” says Jill Brinck, executive director, CancerFree KIDS. “We so appreciate the strong fundraising results, but the bigger win here is hundreds of kids and their collective effort to beat childhood cancer.”
Averee Martin was the highest fundraiser for Loveland, raising $1,025.
Chloe Etter, Ella Nagel, Rachel Yeager, Jenna Batsch, Tess Broermann, Babs Dwyer, Sarah Lolli, Sarah, McKenzie, Audrey Neltner, Lauren Poteet, Presley Beller, Mikayla Loomis, Maggie Norris, Emma Thomson, Brooke Richardson, Savannah Rudy, Grace Trombly, Melanie Anastasia, Sky Boyko, Lily Schroeder, Megan Varadachari, Paige Broermann, Ella Madson, Meghan Smith, Elly Steinbrunner, and Alexa Vallee all raised money.
Traditionally, Night for the Fight is a 12-hour overnight event in which students learn about childhood cancer and take part in games and entertainment throughout the celebration. The 2021 “N4TF Fight Week” evolved into a virtual challenge in which student teams from 37 local high schools competed in scavenger hunt-style challenges by using a special mobile platform to submit photos and videos of their achievements. The 250 challenges ranged from mission-oriented to wacky activities that intend to help encourage children currently battling cancer.
Clermont County-based TQL Foundation served as presenting sponsor of N4TF: Fight Week for a third year in a row. “Research is a critical component of fighting pediatric cancer, and CancerFree KIDS is leading the charge in that effort,” says Kerry Byrne, president, Total Quality Logistics. “We’re honored to support an effort that strongly aligns with our values and allows students to work toward a common goal.”
Since its inception in 2013, Night for the Fight has raised more than $1.7 million for childhood cancer research. CancerFree KIDS is a Cincinnati-based non-profit organization that is committed to eradicating cancer as a life-threatening disease. Founded in 2002, the organization has funded more than $6 million in grants for promising research that would otherwise go unfunded. Did you Know that the Loveland Museum Center is located in the West Loveland Historic District?
Did You Know?
Cassie Mattia is a resident of Historic Downtown
Loveland, Ohio – Our journey continues as we take a stroll down the sidewalks of the West Loveland Historic District (WLHD) and discover the facts that make living and working there so appealing.
It may not be a surprise to Loveland residents that this historic district has always had businesses that give off an artistic ambiance. In the WLHD, there are two businesses that not only give off that Loveland artistic feel, but have also found a way to set themselves apart from other art studios. DID YOU KNOW there is an art studio that provides art classes, parties, events, after school programs, camps and art exhibitions for children and adults? For the Love of Art Studio teaches people of all ages the fundamentals of art using only the best tools and supplies. The art studio hosts birthday parties, private business events and special themed parties for adults, teens and kids. For the Love of Art has a had an overwhelming response to its after-school programs and summer camps. In the after-school art program students from ages, 8 to 14 can work with pastels, oil paint, mix media, acrylic, paper-mache and textures. DID YOU KNOW the Love of Art helps young talent pursue fashion design in their summer camps? The art studio teaches students the basics of fashion illustration and helps them create their own collections using “figure design” and watercolor pencils. Students also get the opportunity to create their very own accessories, such as fiber jewelry and a purse.
A recent work by Loveland artist Deirdre Dyson.
Another place where art is both shared and celebrated is Studio 430 & Art Gallery (formally The Art House II) located in a historic home at 430 West Loveland Avenue. Deirdre Dyson, a world renown artist known for her landscape art, turned the home into a beautiful workspace and art gallery. DID YOU KNOW Dyson has created some of the most sought-after art collections right here in Loveland? Landscapes, A World of
Deirdre and Dick Dyson invested several hundred thousands of dollars in the WLHD to create an art studio and gallery in this historic home as well as a “live-work” 2nd floor.
Light and Color, and Fall Art Show are just a few of Dyson’s collections that have been featured in the media and have been up for prestigious art awards. The public is welcome to enjoy Dyson’s art collections displayed at Studio 430 as well as use the house as an open art studio. Dyson also holds painting classes where she teaches beginners and those with experience about color mixing and how to look at images through a more creative lens. DID YOU KNOW several of Dyson’s painting are inspired by architecture and landscape in Loveland? Dyson has created beautiful oil paintings of the Loveland Historical Museum, Loveland Presbyterian Church, Loveland Market Tents, Putti Fountain Loveland, Old Broadway Loveland, Rolkes Coal Loveland, April Showers on The Little Miami and Loveland Historic Home.
Deirdre and her husband Dick also live above the gallery, living the dream of creating a live/work environment. The Dysons invested thousands and thousands of dollars in the historic home with a large addition to the back, secluded balcony and gardens, and an elevator.
The city of Loveland has always been a community that is dedicated to helping others whether that’s through hosting benefits and charities or just simply getting the word out for a greater cause. DID YOU KNOW the WLHD has two facilities that are dedicated to helping the greater good located in an iconic historic church, The former site of the United Methodist congregation? One such business in the renovated church is RecruitMilitary, founded in 1998. RecruitMilitary is a veteran-owned firm. This recruiting agency has helped more than 1.3 million veterans find careers making them the number one military-to-civilian recruiting firm. DID YOU KNOW RecruitMilitary is the largest producer of military career fairs in the country? Thus far, RecruitMilitary has held more than 900 career fairs in over 60 different markets. From these career fairs, the recruiting agency typically does at least 300 interviews with military veteran job seekers, which in turn generates on average 120 job offers. In addition to the success of the career fairs, RecruitMilitary offers more than 200,000 job opportunities on their website’s job board and has recently teamed up with Google to enhance their job search engine so that candidates will be able to find jobs more relevant to their experience.
Both CancerFree KIDS and RecruitMilitary are in buildings that used to be the Loveland United Methodist Church.
Another organization that the WLHD holds near and dear to its heart is a non-profit for kids that’s also located in the beautiful old church. DID YOU KNOW CancerFree KIDS has been funding childhood cancer research since 2002? CancerFree KIDS was founded by Ellen and Sam Flannery after their five-month-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer in both her eyes. Today their daughter is enjoying a normal life in college due to cancer research. CancerFree KIDS host fundraisers and events all year long to fund the most innovative research in cancer. DID YOU KNOW, since 2002 CancerFree KIDS has funded 124 research projects for a total of 4.4 million dollars? Most recently, on June 19th CancerFree KIDS gave $800,000 in research grants to projects at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. DID YOU KNOW if you visit CancerFree KIDS website you can send a “Courage Lion” to a courageous person? If you go to the how you can help tab on the non-profit’s website you can buy a 12-inch stuffed lion that comes with a personalized gift card and send it out to someone you know. With every lion sent out, CancerFree KIDS sends a “Courage” lion to a child that has been recently diagnosed with cancer. Those wanting to help CancerFree Kids have a number of options they can choose from. Those wanting to help can hold a fundraiser, purchase a raise awareness magnet, donate to CancerFree KIDS or volunteer for any of the events held by the non-profit.
A Loveland Magazine file photo of the Loveland Veterans’ Memorial taken in 2006
History runs very deep in Loveland’s roots, which is why the landscape is decorated in historical memorials. DID YOU KNOW the WLHD has a Veterans’ Memorial? Located on the corner of West Loveland Avenue and Riverside Drive in Veterans’ Memorial Park, the memorial was designed to honor the men and women who have served our country. DID YOU KNOW the Veteran’s Memorial features brick pavers with the names of local veterans engraved in them? Every year before Memorial Day people can order brick pavers to be engraved and placed in the Veteran’s Memorial. The memorial is owned and maintained by taxpayers and overseen by a Veterans’ Memorial Committee.
Each year residents come to the WLHD on Memorial Day at the Loveland Veterans’ Memorial to pay respect to men and women who “gave their all” and to those left behind to mourn. (This is a Loveland Magazine file photo from the Memorial Day service in 2009)
The Veterans’ Memorial was designed by Loveland designer, David Camele and dedicated on Sunday, November 13, 1994.
DID YOU KNOW one of the oldest family-owned funeral homes in the nation is in the WLHD?

Today Robert and Marilyn Schildmeyer along with their sons and grandson run the funeral home officially making them the fourth, fifth and sixth generations to help run the family business. DID YOU KNOW Tufts Schildmeyer offers more funeral options than any other funeral home in Cincinnati? They provide civic Memorials such as veteran memorials. They also offer personalized custom printing and can use a laser to engrave any image you choose on a memorial stone.
The Gertz law firm is at the corner of West Loveland and Wall Street in the WLHD and still undergoing a major facelift.
DID YOU KNOW there is another business that dates back to the 1800’s that is now in the WLHD? Gertz Law began its legacy in Reading with Charles and Marie Gertz. Eventually, Charlie’s son Anthony continued the Gertz legacy and opened his general law practice at the Pike Street office in Reading in 1972. In 2013 Susan Gertz (Allspach) opened a second Gertz law office location in Loveland so that Clermont and Warren County clients could easily access Gertz services. DID YOU KNOW Gertz Law has three attorneys that practice 7 areas of law? The Gertz Law Firm handles divorce and family law, probate administration, wills, trusts, and estate planning, corporate and small business transactions, real estate and personal injury.
The firm has recently invested tens of thousands of dollars into their WLHD building with such things as extensive new landscaping and rebuilding the copper box gutters.
