Kim Hicks receives the OMLA 2018 Support Staff Award

Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District Education Aide Kim Hicks has been named the Ohio Middle Level Association (OMLA) 2018 Support Staff recipient. Hicks works to support students at both Loveland Middle School (LMS) and Loveland Intermediate School (LIS). OMLA will formally recognize her at their annual conference in October.

“Kim Hicks builds relationships and uses them to provide opportunities for those who would otherwise not have any or very few,” said LMS Principal Chuck Ogdan. “Kim actively researches intervention models that work for each student she serves – no matter how difficult the challenge – and she inspires other staff members to never give up on any of our students. She is a valuable member of our team; we are lucky to have her.”

Hicks also volunteers at the NEST after-school program, helping to provide nutrition and academic support for the economically disadvantaged youth and families within the school district. She is  part of the Loveland Educating Against Alcohol and Drugs task force. She helped organize the LMS Breakfast Club where she volunteers before school serving breakfast to economically disadvantaged students. She is a cofounder and organizer of Club Healthy Habits – forming new relationships among students and teachers at LMS.

“Kim has long been a champion for students and families; this is evidenced not only in her vast community involvement, but also her high level of success in providing supports for students struggling with behavioral and/or mental-health needs,” said Loveland Director of Student Services Eric Dool. “Kim has a gift for building rapport, recognizing signs of anxiety, working to calm and deescalate, and striving to instill resilience and self-efficacy in others. She is very deserving of this recognition.”

This is the second OMLA Award LMS won this year. In April, LMS was named No. 1 in Ohio for  Student and Staff Recognition.

Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District has announced that the Ohio Middle Level Association (OMLA) awarded Loveland Middle School (LMS) as the top middle school in Ohio for Student and Staff Recognition. The selection was based on a site visit to LMS, and review of the LMS plan to create a winning culture developed this year by LMS Principal Chuck Ogdan.

“Every student deserves to be recognized because all 739 students at Loveland Middle School are great,” said Ogdan. “Our LMS staff is top notch and also deserves to be recognized. The key to our success is a systematic approach recognizing students. We recognize students weekly through our department awards, monthly at our principal’s lunch, and quarterly with our honor roll and perfect attendance.”

“We are thrilled to see our recognition of students and staff distinguished from all other middle schools in the state with this prestigious award,” said Loveland Superintendent Dr. Amy Crouse. “This award is the result of strategic, focused effort on behalf of the administrative team and staff at Loveland Middle School; we are proud of what they have accomplished.”

Debut Young Women’s Empowerment Event brings big names in female leadership to Loveland Middle School

Loveland, Ohio – One speaker is a brand director at Procter & Gamble; one speaker is a CEO, and the third is a meteorologist with a Cincinnati TV station – all three were female, and each was a guest of honor speaking to Loveland Middle School (LMS) students on women in leadership at the debut LMS Young Women’s Empowerment Event, Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018.

“This event was about building the confidence in our female students so that they understand that they can be anything they aspire to be in their careers; it was a way to place women in significant leadership roles directly in front of them to tell their life journey,” said LMS Assistant Principal Jayson Bruce, who developed the idea for the event back in September.

The speakers included Amanda Hill, brand director at Procter & Gamble, Tracey Artis, CEO of I Hear Music, INC., and Randi Rico, WLWT meteorologist. Each leader had 15 minutes to tell the students about themselves, as well as to speak to what they have overcome in their personal journey. The event concluded with a Q&A session.

“There were a couple of themes from the speakers that were very powerful: focus on yourself and stop worrying about what others think or say, fail as many times as it takes to succeed – failures are a great thing if you learn from them and don’t let them stop you, follow your heart and passions – don’t let anyone stand in your way, and ‘like a girl’ is a compliment – don’t let stereotypes and culture tell you otherwise,” said Bruce.

“It was an inspiration, I know, to me, and I certainly hope it was inspiring for our female students. We simply couldn’t have asked for a better group of professionals to come in and speak. They all showed their passion for not only their careers, but for helping other females be successful.”

“Loveland Middle School is committed to growing every child, every day,” said LMS Principal Chuck Ogdan. “This empowerment session is yet another example of Loveland Middle School’s mission of Improve or Deteriorate… I’d say we all improved today. I want to send a special thank you to Mr. Bruce for organizing this amazing event, and to the wonderful professionals who took time out of their day to grow our LMS students.”

Among elite two percent who earned recognition

LMS Students Kylie Eldridge and Hanna Cosgrove were selected as YMCA Honor Campers.

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland Middle School (LMS) students Hanna Cosgrove and Kylie Eldridge have been selected from 4,000 campers who attended YMCA Camp Ernst to receive the prestigious YMCA Honor Camper award. This selection places Cosgrove and Eldridge in an elite two percent of campers who won.

“Hanna and Kylie have earned a great recognition as YMCA Honor Campers,” said LMS Principal Chuck Ogdan. “LMS is very proud of their steward leadership and willingness to mentor others.”

“These campers made our jobs so much easier,” YMCA Camp Ernst Counselor Jackie Healey said.

A tradition since 1928, Honor Camper was created by Willard L. Wade, the founder of Camp Ernst, to recognize campers with outstanding character and leadership. Camp Ernst staff of more than 200 nominates and votes on campers who they believe display the YMCA core character values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility at the end of the weeklong session.

“These campers made our jobs so much easier,” YMCA Camp Ernst Counselor Jackie Healey said. “We do not just want to recognize the fastest runner in the track meet or the best singer at the campfire, but also those who helped others and showed true leadership all week.”

“Successes such as these exemplify our building mission of Improve or Deteriorate,” said Ogdan. “Because of students like Hanna and Kylie we are making improvements every single day at LMS. Go Tigers!”

Tigers teamed with Matthew 25: Ministries to help hurricane relief

Loveland Elementary School students with supplies the Kindness Committee helped to collect for the district’s hurricane relief efforts.

Every building district-wide collected donations to send south

Loveland, Ohio – From a coin drive at Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) to thousands of items donated at Loveland Primary School (LPS), Loveland Elementary School (LES), Loveland Intermediate School (LIS), Loveland Middle School (LMS) and Loveland High School (LHS) – Tigers answered the call for help for hurricane survivors by joining together to support a collection drive for Matthew 25: Ministries.

“I want to personally recognize one of our high school students – Kailey Packer – for organizing the effort, and coordinating with all of the buildings in the district,” said LHS Principal Peggy Johnson. LHS had two truckloads of more than 500 baby items to deliver to Matthew 25.

LECC raised nearly $350 dollars, LPS collected 10 large bins full of supplies, LES needed 10 flatbed carts to load up their donations, and LIS and LMS combined collected more than 2,700 personal care items. LMS Principal Chuck Ogdan promoted the effort through Twitter, using a photograph of his own donation purchase to motivate LMS students to also help.

Loveland Middle School Principal Chuck Ogdan supported the hurricane relief collection drive through social media by posting his own donation purchase on Twitter to help motivate students.

“Lead by example,” said Ogdan. “Social media can be a powerful tool to let students know you do more than talk the talk. This was a really important show of support for our neighbors who were devastated by the hurricanes, and a good teaching opportunity to show students a real-life example of Tiger Care – which is one of our district goals.”

“As always, our students and their families showed Loveland cares,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Amy Crouse. “I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this Tiger Family.”
