Loveland Magazine’s March Pet of the Month is Announced!

    by Cassie Mattia

Self-described “Dog Mom” Cassie Mattia lives in Historic Downtown Loveland with Nala, Dean, and her boyfriend Adam. Cassie is the Co-Owner and Associate Editor of Loveland Magazine.

Loveland, Ohio – We are pleased to present Loveland Magazine’s Pet of the Month for March! The community of Loveland provided us with some excellent St. Patty’s Day Pet of the Month photos and we are beyond thrilled to celebrate these local pets with YOU the readers!

Introducing Murphy Flanagan, an 11-year-old Goldendoodle, who was born on St. Patty’s Day! Murphy was adopted by Laurie Flanagan and her family who have a strong Irish background.

Laurie Flanagan says Murphy has spent his entire life as a Loveland resident and his 2 human brothers and sister all went to Loveland schools.

“He is a friendly fluff who enjoys exploring in the woods, going on car rides, stealing toys from his neighbor dog friend Bailey, stealing treats from his other neighbor dog friend Oscar, chewing on sticks, and swimming in the ocean,” Flanagan said, “He is affectionately called ‘peanut butter boy’ by his Loveland groomer, Pon of Top Dog Grooming given his lip-smacking joy eating the creamy stuff.”

Murphy loves walking the trail between Symmes Park and Home of the Brave just so he can catch a glimpse of kids playing sports or practicing their instruments for band, according to Flanagan.

“Murphy also likes going to the Loveland Farmers Market to sniff around for the dog treat booth and enjoys hanging on the patio at Ramsey’s Trailside on a nice summer day,” Flanagan added, “We received sad news back in October that Murphy was diagnosed with sarcoma and given 6-12 months to live. Even with a large mass on his right hip that continues to grow in size and is now impacting his walking, he still is a happy camper sharing his good nature and love with anyone he encounters; humans and dogs alike!”

Loveland Magazine’s February Pet of the Month is Announced!

    by Cassie Mattia

Self-described “Dog Mom” Cassie Mattia lives in Historic Downtown Loveland with Nala, Dean, and her boyfriend Adam. Cassie is the Co-Owner and Associate Editor of Loveland Magazine.

Loveland, Ohio – We are pleased to present Loveland Magazine’s Pet of the Month for February! The community of Loveland provided us with some lovely Pet of the Month photos and we are beyond thrilled to celebrate these local pets with YOU the readers!

Introducing Star, a beautiful 4-year-old Holsteiner Cross rescued horse, adopted by Dawn Mason! Star was rescued by Fighting Chance Rescue (FCR) in January 2020.

“Star was on the brink of death, extremely malnourished and unable to stand on her own. Transporting her was a group effort involving the Reily Twp F.D., Kim and Joe Kinder of FCR, and many volunteers,” Mason explained, “Star arrived at FCR strapped to a stretcher and had to immediately be placed in a sling. FCR then made a plea on Facebook asking for help with her.”

Mason had recently lost her 33-year-old horse when hearing about Star needing help.

“I was somewhat depressed and looking for some purpose. Upon seeing Star’s photo, I wanted to help her,” Mason said, “They were just getting her in the sling when I arrived. She looked so tiny and frail. They started her on i.v. fluids then put blankets and heat lamps on her and we waited for the vet. As soon as she got those fluids and started to warm up, she started fighting us. As weak as she was, she had no trust in people and wanted to get away.”

Star required 24-hour observation while in her sling so a community of volunteers took turns watching over her. Mason said she was able to spend several nights with Star during this time.

“Kim from FCR didn’t give Star very good odds of survival. Horses at such a point of malnourishment and muscle wasting often have unseen organ damage they can never recover from. But there was something different about Star, her attitude and fight, I knew she was going to make it,” Mason said.

To everyone’s surprise, a few weeks later Star was able to stand on her own, go outside, and move around.

“Tanya Tieman, the owner of Equisports, provided Bemer therapy treatments for Star and some of the other horses at FCR. During the 1st week of March 2020, Tanya offered to let Star come to Equisports and stay for rehab and some training,” Mason said, “I was able to visit Star a couple of times, but then came the ‘covid lockdown.’ I periodically received updates from Kim, but wasn’t able to see Star.”

In June of 2020, Mason got an unexpected text message from Kim asking if she was interested in adopting Star. Mason jumped on the opportunity and decided to bring Star home just a few weeks later. A few months later after bringing Star home, Mason took her to compete in her first horse show where Star grabbed a 2nd place finish. Shortly after Star competed she then got the chance to be a part of the South Lebanon Christmas in the Village horse parade.

“What makes Star truly special is her attitude. She thinks the world revolves around her and that everything should be done ‘Star’s way.’ Kim often refers to her as a diva,” Mason said, “But that attitude made her a survivor. She’s also a wonderful ambassador for rescue. And this is just the beginning…she’s a rising star!”

Self-described “Dog Mom” Cassie Mattia lives in Historic Downtown Loveland with Nala, Dean, and her boyfriend Adam. Cassie is the Associate Editor of Loveland Magazine.

Loveland, Ohio – We are pleased to present Loveland Magazine’s Pet of the Month for November! The community of Loveland provided us with some amazing Pet of the Month photos and we are beyond thrilled to celebrate these loved animals!

Haley Rodeffer is the loving owner of 1-year-old Charles Peppercorn a.k.a Charlie! Charlie is a Netherland Dwarf Rabbit that according to Haley has more personality than any pet she knows!

“Charlie has been a member of our family since he was just a few weeks old. His best friends are our two house cats whom he loves to play and snuggle with,” Rodeffer said, “When he is very happy he will run laps around the living room and then stretch out on the hardwood floor to cool off. He is quite an escape artist and thus has earned himself the nickname Houdini!”

Charlie is very intelligent as he not only knows how to jump out of this fence, he also can go up and down the stairs, and use his best friends’ cat door to go into the basement! Rodeffer explained that the only way to catch “an escape artist” like Charlie is giving him his favorite treats, which are dried cranberries and bananas.

“When it is time for bed a small handful of pellets does the trick to get Charlie into his cage,” Rodeffer said, “Despite sometimes being a handful, Charlie is a very good bunny and we love him very much!”

OHSAA Announces Suspension of all Contact-Sport Scrimmages

    by Cassie Mattia

Loveland, Ohio – With Ohio High School 2020-2021 sports seasons set to start on August 1st, coaches, parents, fans, and student-athletes are wondering when school vs. school competition will be allowed to resume. That particular question was answered on Tuesday when the OHSAA sent out a newsletter confirming that for the time being all contact-sport school vs. school scrimmages will be suspended.

The OHSAA’s Interim Executive Director, Bob Goldring, stated in the newsletter that the goal is to work with the Governor’s Office to make sure everything that they are implementing for the 2020-2021 sports seasons will be “in concert.”

“We are on track for the low/non-contact sports of golf, girls tennis and volleyball to begin practices on August 1, with school vs. school scrimmages and contests to follow per their normal OHSAA permissible dates and regulations,” Goldring said, “We are on track for the contact sports of football, soccer, field hockey and cross country to begin practices on August 1. We are waiting for more guidance from the Governor’s Office and Department of Health on when school vs. school competition can begin and are hopeful of that permission being granted for our normal contest dates later in August. To that end, school vs. school scrimmages are SUSPENDED. We do not anticipate that suspension changing soon and there remains the possibility that no scrimmages will be permitted in the contact sports of football, soccer, and field hockey. We will certainly keep you updated if that changes.”

Goldring said that the OHSAA plans on continuing to have conversations about both field hockey and cross country being put into the low/non-contact category.

After speaking with the Governor’s Office, Goldring explained that one thing was very clear, the end goal is to make sure Ohio’s student-athletes get the opportunity to “learn the lifelong lessons and receive the social, emotional, and physical benefits that the privilege of participating in education-based interscholastic athletics programs provide.”

“We all have to be accountable for following all mandates and requirements. By not following the mandates and requirements, we are putting our student-athletes at risk of not only contracting and/or spreading COVID-19 but also at risk of losing the season for themselves, their families, their teammates, their schools and their communities. Mandates and requirements put into place must be followed in order for the Governor’s Office to continue to allow us to participate,” Goldring said.

According to Goldring, the OHSAA has been working hard to finalize contest day mandates and requirements that he says will be strictly enforced.

“Our administrators, coaches, and student-athletes will be held accountable for non-compliance. So as to not cause alarm, these mandates and requirements will be to elevate many of the recommendations that were provided in the OHSAA Return to Play Recommendations document to the level of mandates and requirements and should not require wholesale modifications to your game-day protocol,” Goldring added.
