Loveland, Ohio – The Art League of Loveland has announced the 3rd annual Art Gallery Crawl, which will be held Saturday, June 24, from 4 until 9 PM.

The event is back by popular demand and boasts the participation of 118 artists featured throughout the City of Loveland showing their wares and talking with guests about their work. The show includes jewelry makers, painters, sculptors, ceramic and glass artists, fiber artists, and many more.

As always, Loveland’s seven primary art galleries will be holding Open Houses and featuring a variety of renowned artists — both past and present.  In addition, eight local businesses will be featuring artists, including Bond Furniture, Hometown Cafe, Trailside Provisions, and more.

This year’s Art Crawl will have a Welcome Tent at Union Savings Bank on the corner of West Loveland Avenue and Wall Street, where participants can get more information, such as a map of all the venues and a listing of all the artists participating.

The Art Crawl brochure will also show the mile-and-a-half route the event’s “Art Buggy” will be taking, so guests can either walk the route or hop on the free shuttle to pursue their artistic journey viewing a wide variety of art and meeting local artists and artisans. The galleries and venues will be providing special deals and light refreshments for all.

“The show really highlights artists living in and around Loveland,” says Deirdre Dyson, the show’s Honorary Chair and one of the city’s award-winning artists. “Loveland has so much to offer artistically, and we’re proud to sponsor this city-wide event celebrating the arts.” Dyson is the owner of Art House II, which features several galleries of her work.

Overall, 118 artists will be showing their wares, including jewelry, paintings, drawings, pottery, sculptures, glass, fiber arts, and many more.

The Art Gallery Crawl once again will be offering four $250 raffle prizes for participants who complete the Art Gallery circuit and visit each venue. Each prize entitles the winner to select $250 worth of artwork from any of the participating artists/galleries.

There will be several additions that make this Art Crawl a “can’t miss” event! For example, thanks to the Grail’s Art Director, Caroline DiGiovenale, there will be a Children’s Station at Jackson Street Market offering free crafts and activities to entertain young and old alike. A food truck, Caveman Crepes, will be serving up sweet and savory fare at the Welcome Tent. Plus, there will be live music by Ellen Mershon at Whistle Stop Clay Works! This is a free cultural arts event for the entire family brought to you by the Art League of Loveland and the Art Crawl’s many generous sponsors. All are welcome.

ABOUT THE LOVELAND ART GALLERY CRAWl

    MISSION:

The Art Crawl highlights the City’s vibrant art culture — and focuses on the extraordinary creative works by our many Loveland artists!

This event also introduces participants to Loveland’s rich art history. For example, in historic West Loveland, there are two art galleries that feature internationally renowned artists:

Nancy Ford Cones (1869-1962), was an award-winning pioneer in photography as an art medium.

William Schickel (1919-2009), was a prolific liturgical artist and architect whose body of work includes paintings, sculptures, stained glass, and furniture design.

During this one-day art event, Loveland Art Galleries and Artists hold Open Houses from 4-9 PM and offer light appetizers and drinks, while also showcasing a featured artist or highlighting artwork for sale. Altogether, there are seven art galleries and dozens of artist studios within the city.

To provide an extra element of fun for our art crawlers, most galleries provide individual raffles, and one large LAGC raffle prize ($250) will be offered to those crawlers who complete the entire art gallery circuit.

The LAGC “Art Buggy” Shuttle offers hop-on, hop-off transportation from one end of town to the other (about a mile-and-a-half circuit).

All Loveland artists who live and/or work within the Greater Loveland area are welcome to participate. Many local businesses also support this event by featuring local artists’ works or through sponsorships.

The first Loveland Art Gallery Crawl was initiated last year by a group of committed artists and art lovers. The success of that event led to the creation of the Art League of Loveland (ALL), a non-profit organization for artists and art lovers that is dedicated to ensuring all artists thrive in the Loveland community.

This year’s Loveland Art Gallery Crawl is led by members of the Art League of Loveland. For more information: www.ArtLeagueofLoveland.org

  • Christmas in Loveland will be a beautiful wonderland on December 17

Christmas in Loveland will be a beautiful wonderland on December 17

    David Miller

    by David Miller

Loveland, Ohio – The Little Miami River Chamber Alliance is calling all Christmas fanatics to come and enjoy a beautifully decorated City of Loveland winter wonderland. Can anyone resist the clip-clop and jingle of horse-drawn carriages and the smell of hot cider?

The Little Miami River Chamber Alliance said that the City of Loveland will once again be transformed into a beautiful wonderland for the Christmas holiday.

On December 17, visitors can enjoy carriage rides, a train ride, complimentary tastings, crafts, holiday beverages, a trolley ride, Christmas entertainment, and a few new items in historical downtown Loveland.  Entertainment will be in the center of town next to the live nativity scene and inside many businesses.

CeeCee Collins, President of the chamber shared that “there will be so many fun activities such as train rides, caroling and Santa’s Wonderland, just to name a few! This is such a great event where the businesses want to give back to everyone that has patronized and visited in downtown. They truly appreciate everyone supporting local businesses and hope they will return to enjoy all of the Loveland area. There will be many samplings and give-a-ways for all ages to enjoy!”

This event will be held rain, snow, or shine. And we predict shine because the Weather Channel says it will be sunny and nearly 40 degrees on December 17,

    A few Facts:

    • The event takes place from 4-8 PM, on December 17th
    • The train is at the Loveland Museum Center and a trolley will take guests from Downtown Loveland to the museum
    • Maps of all the activities will be placed inside the businesses and available by the clock tower.
    • A back portion of Railroad Avenue will be closed to allow for the horse-drawn carriages. Carriages will cost $2 per person.
    • Line up for the Carriage is on Railroad Avenue across from the Wicked Pickle Restaurant.
    • A Holiday Trolley will transport people to the Loveland History Museum from Harrison Avenue at no charge.
    • Entertainment will be in the center of town and next to the fountain.
    • A shuttle bus will take folks from the Shoppers Haven Parking lot to downtown Loveland. The Shuttle will run the entire time.
    • The event is free for all, thanks to our sponsors. Special Thank you to our Presenting sponsors: Sibcy Cline Realtors, Kelli Williams, and McCluskey Chevrolet, Inc.
This is believed to be the poster for the first Christmas in Loveland in 1987.

The event began in 1987 when Loveland artist, Deirdre Dyson was asked to design and silkscreen posters for the first two years of Christmas in Loveland.

On, December 6, 1987, women at Grailville saw the crass capitalism of how the birth of Jesus was celebrated and wanted to change things up, at least for Loveland. They wanted to put a little “Christ” back into Christmas by offering a community event they named, Christmas in Loveland.

Dyson said, “The intent of the women at the women’s retreat center was to celebrate Christmas, rather than celebrate Christmas shopping.”

Years later, former Loveland resident, Martin Schickel volunteered to start organizing the event and did so for many years. Schickel’s family was deeply connected with Grailville, so it was a natural fit. In 2013, Schickel, who was also one of the founders of Loveland’s Amazing Race, later re-named The Amazing Charity Race, decided to gradually retire from being so actively involved in community events, so he turned over Christmas in Loveland to the Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce. It was Schickel’s gift to the community that he re-gifted to the Chamber. Schickel also has deep connections with the Chamber having once served as its President.

The House of Joy at Grailville – file photos by David Miller

    by David Miller

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland resident Deirdre Dyson expressed a vision for the Grailville property at Tuesday’s council meeting during the open forum. “I question the idea that residential development of the property is inevitable, said Dyson. Then she talked about her vision.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Our apology for the sound quality of this video. It was hard to overcome the HVAC noise just overhead, a soft-spoken person, and a podium mic that wasn’t producing much volume.

A transcript has now been added. Read it below.

    Good Evening, Everybody,

My name is Deirdre Dyson. I live at 430 W. Loveland Ave. I’ve lived in Loveland – I discovered to my horror today – for 53 years. I knew it had been a while, but it’s been a pleasure, all those 53 years.

I wish to talk to you this evening about Grailville, not about legislation and annexation, but just about Grailville itself. I’ve questioned the idea that residential development of the property is inevitable. Grailville is a classic gem of Victorian residential architecture. Many of the unique buildings on the property include: a dining hall designed by William Schickel; a venue for recitals, weddings, and events; trails; and much more.

I understand and respect that Grailville wants and needs to sell the property, but I suggest their needs could tie in and satisfy one of Loveland’s greatest needs at the moment. In spite of the recent and the terrific, great growth and revitalization, there is one area, one item that is sadly missing in Loveland. It needs accommodations. I imagine many of you have tried to find a place for out-of-town guests within the ambience of the town. Not easy. There is an opportunity here, I believe, to transform the buildings into an absolute gem for the city, community, and area: a boutique hotel Bed & Breakfast Plus.

Could the city actively seek a different kind of developer or group to purchase and restore the property with integrity and vision to honor its historic value? Other towns of Loveland’s sizer have renovated hotels; ornately painted mansions; emphasized architectural detail. Grailville offers all those possibilities and more, with attractive landscaping and walking trails. Just imagine how delightful it would be to stay in Grailville’s renovated, plush Bed & Breakfast rooms or hotel, go for a walk on the woodland property, then explore downtown area for communal bike trail and restaurants, etc. It would not generate traffic congestion like putting 250 or so homes in that area would generate. Road and sewer demands would be a fraction of the proposed development costs.

If you have never set foot on the property, let me say that I’m not the only person to feel that there’s something very special there. You can feel it immediately you get on the property. It exudes an aura of calm and tranquility, what so many of us are seeking these days. Surely there must be some entrepreneur or company out there looking for just such an investment opportunity, to purchase to renovate as business opportunity that would serve us all.

Please don’t let Grailville be just another discarded jewel in the history of what used to be a quaint and unique town.

    Thank you.

  • Art Jarvis makes stage debut in Loveland Stage Company’s “Mamma Mia”

Art Jarvis makes stage debut in Loveland Stage Company’s “Mamma Mia”

    Contributed by Ann Barfels

    The latest Prompter is here!

Loveland, Ohio – Although he holds many roles in the community (Loveland School Board President,  President of Jarvis Global Investments LLC, and is the current season sponsor for the theatre company), Art Jarvis hasn’t appeared on stage since high school, and never with lines to memorize!  In high school, he appeared in the ensemble of “Wizard of Oz” and “Camelot” and also was a member of the Cincinnati Boys Choir. But this is all new to him.

When Deirdre Dyson, artistic director, and Steve Kovacs, co-producer approached Art and offered him the role of the priest in their production of “Mamma Mia”, Art was reluctant to accept since he had just had foot surgery and wasn’t sure he could even walk by the opening date of August 15. But he accepted and is now excited and appreciative of the new experience and the chance to make new friends.

He is amazed at the amount of time involved to produce a show, “But it shows” says Art. A typical show calls for an average of 15 hours of rehearsal per week and many weeks might involve more than that during the average 6 weeks to put a show together. Add to that painting the set, making costumes, etc. and you can easily reach over 20 hours per week.

Art says the main reason he accepted this new and challenging experience is that, “Loveland Stage Company is a jewel in Loveland’s crown!”

“Mamma Mia” opens August 15 and runs through the 25.

    Curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. on the 15th , 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th and at 3 p.m. on the 18th, 24th and 25th.

There will be an ASL interpreter at the 3 p.m. show on the 24th.

Tickets are $20 and can be bought online at http://lovelandstagecompany.org  for large groups or accessible seating call 513-443-4572. The theatre is located at 111 S. 2nd St. (Rt. 48), Loveland, 45140.

  • [Part 3] My journey to the “West Loveland Historic District”

[Part 3] My journey to the “West Loveland Historic District”

Did you Know that the Loveland Museum Center is located in the West Loveland Historic District?

    Did You Know?

Cassie Mattia is a resident of Historic Downtown

Loveland, Ohio – Our journey continues as we take a stroll down the sidewalks of the West Loveland Historic District (WLHD) and discover the facts that make living and working there so appealing.

It may not be a surprise to Loveland residents that this historic district has always had businesses that give off an artistic ambiance. In the WLHD, there are two businesses that not only give off that Loveland artistic feel, but have also found a way to set themselves apart from other art studios. DID YOU KNOW there is an art studio that provides art classes, parties, events, after school programs, camps and art exhibitions for children and adults? For the Love of Art Studio teaches people of all ages the fundamentals of art using only the best tools and supplies. The art studio hosts birthday parties, private business events and special themed parties for adults, teens and kids. For the Love of Art has a had an overwhelming response to its after-school programs and summer camps. In the after-school art program students from ages, 8 to 14 can work with pastels, oil paint, mix media, acrylic, paper-mache and textures. DID YOU KNOW the Love of Art helps young talent pursue fashion design in their summer camps? The art studio teaches students the basics of fashion illustration and helps them create their own collections using “figure design” and watercolor pencils. Students also get the opportunity to create their very own accessories, such as fiber jewelry and a purse.

A recent work by Loveland artist Deirdre Dyson.

Another place where art is both shared and celebrated is Studio 430 & Art Gallery (formally The Art House II) located in a historic home at 430 West Loveland Avenue. Deirdre Dyson, a world renown artist known for her landscape art, turned the home into a beautiful workspace and art gallery. DID YOU KNOW Dyson has created some of the most sought-after art collections right here in Loveland? Landscapes, A World of

Deirdre and Dick Dyson invested several hundred thousands of dollars in the WLHD to create an art studio and gallery in this historic home as well as a “live-work” 2nd floor.

Light and Color, and Fall Art Show are just a few of Dyson’s collections that have been featured in the media and have been up for prestigious art awards. The public is welcome to enjoy Dyson’s art collections displayed at Studio 430 as well as use the house as an open art studio. Dyson also holds painting classes where she teaches beginners and those with experience about color mixing and how to look at images through a more creative lens. DID YOU KNOW several of Dyson’s painting are inspired by architecture and landscape in Loveland? Dyson has created beautiful oil paintings of the Loveland Historical Museum, Loveland Presbyterian Church, Loveland Market Tents, Putti Fountain Loveland, Old Broadway Loveland, Rolkes Coal Loveland, April Showers on The Little Miami and Loveland Historic Home.

Deirdre and her husband Dick also live above the gallery, living the dream of creating a live/work environment. The Dysons invested thousands and thousands of dollars in the historic home with a large addition to the back, secluded balcony and gardens, and an elevator.

The city of Loveland has always been a community that is dedicated to helping others whether that’s through hosting benefits and charities or just simply getting the word out for a greater cause. DID YOU KNOW the WLHD has two facilities that are dedicated to helping the greater good located in an iconic historic church, The former site of the United Methodist congregation? One such business in the renovated church is RecruitMilitary, founded in 1998. RecruitMilitary is a veteran-owned firm. This recruiting agency has helped more than 1.3 million veterans find careers making them the number one military-to-civilian recruiting firm. DID YOU KNOW RecruitMilitary is the largest producer of military career fairs in the country? Thus far, RecruitMilitary has held more than 900 career fairs in over 60 different markets. From these career fairs, the recruiting agency typically does at least 300 interviews with military veteran job seekers, which in turn generates on average 120 job offers. In addition to the success of the career fairs, RecruitMilitary offers more than 200,000 job opportunities on their website’s job board and has recently teamed up with Google to enhance their job search engine so that candidates will be able to find jobs more relevant to their experience.

Both CancerFree KIDS and RecruitMilitary are in buildings that used to be the Loveland United Methodist Church.

A Loveland Magazine file photo of the Loveland Veterans’ Memorial taken in 2006

History runs very deep in Loveland’s roots, which is why the landscape is decorated in historical memorials. DID YOU KNOW the WLHD has a Veterans’ Memorial? Located on the corner of West Loveland Avenue and Riverside Drive in Veterans’ Memorial Park, the memorial was designed to honor the men and women who have served our country. DID YOU KNOW the Veteran’s Memorial features brick pavers with the names of local veterans engraved in them? Every year before Memorial Day people can order brick pavers to be engraved and placed in the Veteran’s Memorial. The memorial is owned and maintained by taxpayers and overseen by a Veterans’ Memorial Committee.

To learn more about purchasing a paver, call 513-707-1439. (Download the memorial paver application form (PDF).)

Each year residents come to the WLHD on Memorial Day at the Loveland Veterans’ Memorial to pay respect to men and women who “gave their all” and to those left behind to mourn. (This is a Loveland Magazine file photo from the Memorial Day service in 2009)

The Veterans’ Memorial was designed by Loveland designer, David Camele and dedicated on Sunday, November 13, 1994.
