    Larger SSI, Social Security payments on the way for individuals with disabilities

    Shaun Heasley with Disability Scoop reports that individuals with disabilities receiving Supplemental Security Income and other Social Security benefits are seeing the largest rise in their monthly payments in decades.

    With the new year, benefits are up 8.7%, according to the Social Security Administration. That’s the biggest increase since 1981.

    Feds issue new rules for COVID-19 vaccines at facilities serving people with disabilities

    Government officials are setting new expectations related to COVID-19 vaccines at institutions for people with disabilities and similar rules are under consideration for group homes as well.

    Long-term care facilities like nursing homes and intermediate care facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities must educate residents and staff about COVID-19 vaccines and offer shots to them under the interim final rule being published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the Federal Register this week.

    In addition, the facilities are required to report the COVID-19 vaccination status of both residents and staff to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a weekly basis.

    Disability-Related Hate Crimes up sharply, FBI data shows

    Newly-released data indicates that hate crime incidents targeting people with disabilities are on the rise.

    There were 177 reported hate crime offenses stemming from disability bias in 2018, according to figures out this week from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program. By comparison, there were 128 similar offenses the year prior.

    FBI records spike In disability-related hate crimes

    As hate crimes across the U.S. surge, new data indicates that incidents targeting people with disabilities are up sharply too.

    There were 128 hate crime offenses reported during 2017 stemming from bias against those with disabilities, according to the FBI. That’s up from 76 the previous year.

    The numbers released this week come from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, which tallies data submitted by law enforcement agencies across the country on incidents motivated by disability as well as race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, gender and gender identity.
