A Look At Loveland Spring Sports

Loveland, Ohio – It is going to be a busy weekend for Loveland Tiger Athletes. Let’s catch up on how the spring sports teams are doing, and highlight some great individual performances!

Loveland Softball

Going into their game this evening against West Clermont, the Tigers sit at 1-1. They won their opener 11-9 over Anderson but dropped their next contest to little Miami 8-6.

Boys Volleyball

Loveland Boys Volleyball got off to a hot start at 2-1, beating both Fairfield and Turpin. They fell in five sets to Milford on the road in a very tough game. Their next game comes April 2 against Princeton.

Carter Lucas leads the ECC in Kills with 37 while Freshman Gavin McWaters is fourth in the conference with 30. Clay Bebout and Colton Baker are 1-2 in the league in blocks, so the Tigers are well represented on the leaderboards for the ECC.

Loveland Boy’s Lacrosse

Loveland Boy’s Lacrosse lost its first three games out of the gate this year. But they bounced back in a big way against Anderson with a 12-0 victory. Luke Daugherty (So) and Adam King (Jr) paced the Tigers with three goals apiece. They take on Little Miami on April 2nd.

Other Spring Sports

Loveland Baseball’s first game is March 29th against Brecksville-Broadview. Girl’s Lacrosse has played one game, a close 10-7 loss to Anderson. Track and Field gets going in earnest in early April, and Boy’s Tennis will open their season against Elder on the 31st.

ECC’s Tyler McKinley: 2024 Ohio Mr. Basketball Finalists

The Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association has announced the finalists for the 2024 Ohio Mr. Basketball Award. The winner will be announced next Wednesday, March 20.

Tyler McKinley averaged 19.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game with Winton Woods this season. He shot 61.7 percent from the field

In the 2024-25 season the 6-9 Senior led the Warriors to the Eastern Cincinnati Conference title for the first time finishing with an outstanding 14-2 (19 – 4) mark. A University of Cincinnati signee, he is rated the No. 1 player in the state in all publications according to the Ohio High School Athletic Association. McKinley was ECC player of the year. He also played at Walnut Hills and Link Year Prep Academy in Missouri where he won a national title.

Voting is currently underway for the 224 registered Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association (OPSWA) members and will end at noon on Monday, March 18.

The voting process for OPSWA members is the same as that used to deter

mine the Heisman Trophy winner in college football. First place votes get three points, second-place votes get two points and third-place votes get one point.

Ohio’s Mr. Basketball was selected by the Associated Press from 1987-2016. Since 2017 it has been presented by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

The OPSWA All-Ohio teams will begin being released on Monday, March 25.

2024 Ohio Mr. Basketball Finalists

J’Allen Barrino, Malvern, 6-2, sr.

Division III East District and Inter-Valley Conference North Division Player of the Year after leading the Hornets to a 22-0 regular season. He has played 59 career games at Malvern and the team has gone 56-3. His senior year, J’Allen was 174-of-242 from the field, averaging 18.6 ppg while only taking 11 shots per game. He shot 74% from the foul line and also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 5.2 steals. Barrino surpassed 1,000 career points and owns school records for steals in a season and a career. He also currently ranks third in career assists in school history.

Alex Bruskotter, Shelby, 6-8, sr.

The Wright State University commit averaged 23.8 points, 9.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game this season. The Northwest District Co-Player of the Year was also the Player of the Year by the District 6 coaches association and the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference. He scored 53 points in a game with 12 3s in a game this season. He is second in scoring behind the legendary Larry Siegfried. Bruskotter was also invited to represent Ohio in Italy in March. He is a three-time All-Ohioan.

Marcus Johnson, Garfield Heights, 6-1, soph.

NE Lakes District POY coming off an All-Ohio first team season as a freshman and ranked 12th nationally in the Class of 2026. Johnson led the Bulldogs (21-1) to a 19-0 start that included wins against Huntington Prep, Western Reserve Academy, defending Texas state champion Faith Family Christian and OHSAA champion Richmond Heights. Johnson has offers from Ohio State to Alabama, Cincinnati, LSU and Villanova. Averaged 23.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals.

Kruz McClure, Westerville South, 6-4, jr.

The Central District, District 10 Coaches Association (co-) and OCC Capital player of the year, McClure averaged 23.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.6 steals for a 16-8 district semifinalist. The guard shot 45 percent from the field (30 percent from three-point range) and 88 percent at the free throw line despite suffering from Crohn’s Disease, which flared up several times during the season and hospitalized him the night before a district tournament game. McClure, who owns 14 Division I offers (Ohio State, Dayton are very interested), has scored 1,098 points in his career.

Jesse McCulloch, Cleveland Heights Lutheran East, 6-10, sr.

NE Lakes District POY. Michigan State recruit led Falcons (16-5) to the No. 1 ranking in Division III as defending state champions, despite losing high profile forward T.J. Crumble to rival Richmond Heights. McCulloch averaged 22.4 points, 14.1 rebounds, 4.3 blocked shots and 2.7 assists. Also had a signature moment in mid-December, outplaying Cincinnati Winton Woods’ Tyler McKinley in a 71-45 win. McCulloch had 27 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks against him. Other signature performances include 21 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks to beat Richmond Heights. Had a game-high 26 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks WHILE PLAYING SICK in a loss at Cleveland St. Ignatius. Had in a 55-36 win vs. Isidore Newman (La.) at Flyin’ to the Hoop. Also had 40, 15 and five in a win vs. Mentor. Completely transformed his body since his freshman season, when he was out of shape at 6-6 and 245 pounds.

Tyler McKinley, Cincinnati Winton Woods, 6-9, sr.

19.4 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 3.6 apg. Shot 61.7 percent from the field and led his team to the Eastern Cincinnati Conference title for the first time. A UC signee, he is rated the No. 1 player in the state in all publications. Was ECC player of the year. Also played at Walnut Hills and Link Year Prep Academy in Missouri where he won a national title.

Hayden Nigro, Louisville, 6-5, sr

Northeast Inland District Player of the Year. 6-4 wing averaged 20.9 points on 51.3 percent shooting from the field. Averaged 4.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists. … Huge games against some of Louisville’s best competition, including 31 points against Akron Hoban and 31 against Lutheran East. … Four-year varsity player, three-year starter. Louisville’s all-time leading scorer with 1,434 points, which rank 14th in Stark County history. … Receiving D2 and D3 college interest. … District 4 Coaches Association D1 Player of the Year. … Louisville finished 23-3, with only losses to St. Ignatius, St. Edward and Canton GlenOak in district final.

Mason Shrout, Camden Preble Shawnee, 6-5, sr.

24.2 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.6 spg, 57.2% FG, 42.0 3 PT% 1st Team Western Ohio Athletic Conference, WOAC Player of the Year; District 15 Player of the Year. Led the Arrows to a second straight Division III district title and regional semifinal berth. An unselfish player, had five assists in district title game. The first player from Preble County to surpass 2,000 career points. Signed with Purdue Fort Wayne.

Colin White, Ottawa-Glandorf, 6-6 sr.

Ohio State University commit averaged 24.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game this season for the Associated Press poll champion Titans, who are 20-3 as of March 4. White is already a two-time All-Ohio first team selection and has been O-G’s top player on three straight state semifinal teams (runners-up in 2022, 2023). White has also helped the Titans to 28 consecutive Western Buckeye League wins, three straight league titles, and has been the WBL and District 8 Player of the Year three times. A four-year starter, White has played in 105 varsity basketball games, with O-G going 90-15 in those games. He is the all-time career leading scorer in the hot-bed basketball history of Putnam County. White enters the district semifinal round with 1,876 career points.

The OPSWA All-Ohio teams will begin being released on Monday, March 25.

[Photos] Tiger Women bow out to #1 team in Ohio

Loveland Senior Guard Josie Early

Harrison, Ohio – The Loveland High School Women’s Basketball Team ended their season in the 3rd round of the Ohio Basketball Tournament with a loss to the #1 team in Ohio. The game on Tuesday afternoon was played at Harrison High School. The score was Mason 49, Loveland 22. Josie Early led the Tiger scoring with 8 and Olivia Raby scored 5. Grace Dressell scored 4.

The Tigers (11-5, 17-8) finished in 3rd place in the ECC.

Conference leader West Clermont went into their tournament game on Monday and saw their 24 and-no-loss season disappear. The Kings Knights (13-1, 21-5), # 2 in the ECC beat the Wolves 49-43. Kings continued their tourney journey by beatingt Centerville today 61-53.

Meanwhile, the Tiger Men’s team lost their entry game in the State Tournament on Tuesday 73-47 against Princeton.

Loveland Men win ECC title and conference bowling tournament

Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland High School Men’s Bowling team went wire to wire this season and won the 1st ever ECC Bowling Tournament on Saturday. Based on the regular season and tourney play, Loveland walked away with ECC Championships. Loveland finished the regular season 9-0, and 15-2 overall.

Brady Burns averaged 205.7 and Wyatt Glassmeyer 186.3 in the ECC tournament. Burns made the ECC Conference All-Tournament Team with a 617 tournament series.

The 2023 Sectional tournament begins this week.

[Photo Albums] Tiger basketball claims 2nd in ECC after easy win over Anderson

CORRECTION: The game against Kings Thursday, January 26 is at Kings High School.

Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland Women (10-3, 14-4) climbed into second place in the ECC after their Senior Night victory over Anderson Monday, 47-34.

Behind the Tigers is Kings (10-3, 13-5). The Tigers beat Kings 46-45 in overtime on December 12 and the rivalry rekindles this Thursday when the Knights come to Loveland for a showdown at 7:30 PM. (CORRECTION: The game against Kings Thursday, January 26 is at Kings High School.)

Loveland is on a 7-game win streak. They beat Lebanon on the road 38-33 last Thursday and defeated Indian Hills in the Braves’ gym 46-30 last Wednesday.

Loveland’s Freshman Katy Wilber drained five threes in the first half at Indian Hill and finished with two more in the second to lead all scorers with 21. Olivia Raby scored 11.

Josie Early led all scorers in her Senior Night performance with 15, she pulled down 6 rebounds and collected 5 steals.

The Tigers have a non-conference home game at 2 PM this Saturday against Springboro and travel to West Clermont on Monday, January 30. Undefeated West Clermont (13-19, 19-0) stands in the Tiger’s way of winning the conference. The Wolves are rated the #4 team in Ohio. The Tigers came within 6 of beating West Clermont on December 15. It was one of West Clermont’s closest games.

Loveland, Ohio – Haven’t seen the 2023 “Our Way” edition of Loveland High School Women’s basketball? Here is a photo sampling of the fierce play you’ve missed.

The Tigers are currently in 3rd place in the tough Eastern Cincinnati Conference with an 8-3, 11-4 record.

This past Monday they defeated Turpin on the Tiger court 39-36 and overwhelmed the Little Miami Panthers on the road, 54-39 on January 12. At home, on January 10 they defeated Winton Woods 37-36. And, on January 5 defeated Milford on the Tiger court 45-43.

That’s a 4 game-winning streak and 6 wins in their last 7 games.

The women travel tonight to nearby Indian Hill to take on their all-time leading scorer, Ella Riggs who on January 7 set the Braves record with 1638 career points. This is a non-conference game against the 5-4, 9-4 Braves, who are on a 8-win and 1-loss streak in the Cincinnati Hills League.

In the Tiger win over Turpin Olivia Rabe scored 16. At Little Miami, she scored 23 and pulled down 13 rebounds, had 5 assists and steals, and blocked 4 shots. She leads the ECC averaging 3.6 blocks per outing.

Jose Early scored 13 against Turpin and is second in the ECC with 4.1 assists per game. She is first among ECC opponents with 3 steals per game.

The scoring was spread out in the Winton Woods game with Katy Wilber, Olivia Raby, and Josie Early scoring 9 each and Sophia Kapszukiewicz adding 7.

For high school basketball fans, know that this Tiger team is aggressively smart and disciplined under the co-coaching staff of Keith Braswell and Brad Early.

The next home game for the Tigers is Monday, January 23 vs Anderson, however, Indian Hill High School is a close enough venue, and it will be a short journey to see some incredible athletes tonight. The game time is 7:30.

Jeff Williams and Luke Waddell will be inducted into Class of 2022 Loveland High School Athletic Hall of Fame

Loveland, Ohio – The induction into the Class 0f 2022 Loveland High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be on Friday, February 3 at Loveland High School. The time will be approximately at 7:30 PM between the JV and Varsity Men’s baseball games.

Jeff Williams served as Loveland Athletic Booster President from 2005 to 2020.

There were three Loveland High School State Championships during his tenure for which he organized Tony’s dinners, championship rings, and state travel gear.

Jeff raised $500,000 for the first turf field and $750,000 for a weight room that is used by all athletes in grades 7 thru 12.

Jeff was responsible for the “Building Tradition” branding, creating the Friday Night football experience, revamping locker rooms, and the purchase of the “Bleacher Jersey” and two Tiger tunnels.

During his tenure, he established a long-term relationship with a spirit wear vendor. He challenged City Hall when they tried to ban candy from being thrown during the Homecoming Parade. Jeff started the tradition of ECC Champs and Senior dinners for all athletes at Tony’s Steakhouse. He revamped the Hall of Fame dinner and gifts.

Loveland Freshman, Like Waddell had 175 ground yards on 19 carries, and 194 total yards when Loveland High School won the state Division II championship in 2013.

Loveland, Ohio – Eight games into the season the Tiger Men (2-3, 5-3) stand in 5th place in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference (ECC). Leading the Tigers in scoring is 11th grader Brayden Frietch averaging 11.5 points per game. Close behind is 11th grader Jack Sauer averaging 11.4. Both Frietch and Sauer have scored 12 three-pointers.

The Women are 3-3, 5-3, and Leading the Women are Senior forward Olivia Raby averaging 10.6, and Senior guard Josie Early averaging 10. The Women are in 7th place in the ECC.

Coach Parker Night is home opener for Loveland Women’s Basketball

Loveland, Ohio – On Monday, December 5 you can join our Tiger Nation in celebrating the life and legacy of Women’s Basketball Head Coach Darnell Parker. His daughters have established a scholarship in their father’s name to award to a deserving Loveland High School athlete.

The Varsity Game is at 7:30 PM and the JV game is at 6 PM. Sometime around 7, between the JV and Varsity games is when Darnell’s family will be called down to mid-court.

Will you wear orange and black spirit wear? Will you wear your Coach Parker tee? Will you come and compete in the half-court throwdown? Will you buy enough split-the-pot tickets to win the split?

The split-the-pot raffle, the half-court shot tickets, and cookies will be sold throughout the JV and Varsity games. The half court competition and split the pot winner will be announced at half-time of the Varsity game.

   Darnell had more fun than anyone could imagine playing collegiate basketball and earning his bachelor’s degree. 

   A student earning this scholarship will be continually inspired by Coach Darnell Parker to push through adversity to accomplish their dreams.

Loveland High School star Drew Plitt signs with Bengals

Loveland, Ohio – The Bengals today signed college free agent QB Drew Plitt and waived CB John Brannon. In addition, G Alex Cappa and HB Samaje Perine have been cleared to practice and removed from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.

Plitt (6-2, 206), a rookie out of Ball State University, played in 46 career games for the Cardinals with 36 starts and completed 777 of 1246 passes (62.4 percent) for 9062 yards and 68 TDs. He also rushed for 423 yards and 14 TDs.

Plitt, who participated at the Bengals’ rookie minicamp in May as a tryout player, is from the Greater Cincinnati area and played at Loveland High School in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, where he set a school record for career TD passes (42) and in 2013 led the Tigers to a 14-0 record and the Ohio Division II state championship.

Drew Plitt quarterbacked the Ohio Division II state championship team in 2013 for Loveland High School. An undefeated 14-0 Tiger season.
