Great Oaks associates and Board member chosen for nationwide inclusion and equity program

Two Great Oaks associates and a Great Oaks Board member have been chosen to be part of the new Inclusion, Access, Equity and Diversity (IAED) Mentorship Program launched by the Association for Career and Technical Education.

Ramona Beck, Assistant Dean at Scarlet Oaks Career Campus and “AL” Long, Great Oaks Board member representing North College Hill, were among 32 educational leaders selected as mentors.  Scarlet Oaks English instructor Emma Godfrey is one of 36 mentees in the program.

Long is also a member of ACTE’s IAED Advisory Group, which helped develop the Mentorship Program and other activities.

The IAED Mentorship Program was created to further inclusion, access, equity and diversity in career-technical education in the United States.  Mentors and mentees will be encouraged to take on leadership roles in the national ACTE organization and advised current career-technical leaders on IAED issues.

Participants in the program will meet monthly and take on such activities as reviewing current best practices in IAED, developing statements and documents for career-technical schools and organizations, and helping to shape national policies and procedures.

Great Oaks launches virtual tours of high school career labs

Image above is from one of the many virtual tours that Great Oaks now offers to students that cannot visit the campus

Choosing classes to take during high school can be a challenge. Sophomores at area high schools typically get the chance to visit the career labs at Great Oaks campuses before making such a decision, but with current pandemic restrictions many sophomores may not have that opportunity.

“Seeing the professional equipment and technology that our students use in their programs is important for those considering a career program,” said Great Oaks Director of Student Services Nancy Mulvey. “We want them to get to know the instructor, hear from other students and graduates, and walk through the labs.” Mulvey said that because most of Great Oaks’ 36 school districts aren’t able to send groups of sophomores to tour the nearest campus, Great Oaks has created virtual tours.

The virtual tours, posted on greatoaks.com, include 360-degree views of each lab at each campus, along with profiles of the instructors, conversations with alumni, pictures of students at work, and information about future careers.

“Thousands of students each year apply for these hands-on, experiential learning programs that lead to professional certifications,” said Mulvey.  “We want to make sure that they have a chance to explore and ask questions.”

  • Symmes Township’s Nancy Mulvey honored by national school organization

Symmes Township’s Nancy Mulvey honored by national school organization

Symmes Township resident and Great Oaks Director of Student Services Nancy Mulvey was honored this month with the Distinguished Service Award from the National Council of Local Administrators NCLA, a national association for career and technical administrators.  She was recognized for her service to career-technical education and for her professional accomplishments.

Mulvey has served the students of Great Oaks Career Campuses for more than 30 years as a math teacher, counselor, career specialist, campus dean, and district administrator. In her current role as Director of Student Services, she has strengthened both physical health and mental health services for students, led the effort to rewrite Board policies, began a summer camp program for younger students, and helped guide the district to record levels of high school enrollment.

The nomination read in part, “Nancy recognizes best practices in the field, and shares, adapts, and improves those practices to benefit current and future students as well as the organizations she serves. She freely shares her own ideas and innovations and champions those practices that others have developed, for the benefit of career-technical education as a whole.”

The award was presented virtually during the NCLA Best Practices Conference, which was held online this year.

Here is how the Great Oaks campuses will open in the Fall.

Please note:  The following information applies only to high school students at Great Oaks campuses.

Our community, and the world, continues to adapt to the ongoing pandemic. In all that we do at Great Oaks, the safety and health of our students, staff and visitors is our highest priority. Whenever students, staff and visitors are together in a Great Oaks building, we expect that social distancing (at a minimum of 6 feet) is practiced, face coverings will be worn by all, and the buildings and equipment will be frequently cleaned and sanitized. We also encourage such healthy personal habits as regular hand-washing.

The following information reflects the most recent planning; information can change if circumstances change.

    Update July 20, 2020

Academic classes will be held online

In order to maximize the amount of hands-on, career-technical education available to students, all in-person classes will be in the career lab with the career-technical instructor.  English, mathematics, social studies, and science classes will be held remotely.  Students will spend all day two days per week in their career-technical program.

As part of this schedule, students will have time to meet individually with academic instructors while on campus, which will support their online learning.  It also means that the same group of students will stay in the same room—their career lab—for the full day, reducing the number of times per day needed to sanitize rooms as we would if students changed classes for multiple periods daily.

Students will attend the campus on Mondays and Thursdays as part of the A group, or Tuesdays and Fridays as part of the B group.  During the remaining three days, students will work remotely on academic work and other homework, with Wednesday set aside for one-on-one remote assistance.

This schedule will run for the first quarter, until October 16.

Exploring college and career options: Free informational meetings for parents

One session in Loveland on Wednesday, January 15

    by Jon Weidlich

Parents of middle school and high school students often don’t realize that attending a career-technical school can be an advantage for college-bound students, says education consultant Beth Probst of At The Core, LLC. “Attending a career center like Great Oaks in the Cincinnati area can provide experience, connections, professional credentials, college credit, and even a sense of purpose for students who plan to attend college,” she said, “But sometimes parents get focused on one single path for their kids.”

Attending a career-technical school can be an advantage for college-bound students.

That realization prompted her to begin offering free coffee chats for parents in southwestern and central Ohio to discuss the paths available. Probst, who works with families on college and career planning, is a believer in career-technical schools. “Like many parents, I had a perception of career centers from my own high school experience years ago. When I saw all that today’s career centers offer our high school students, I was blown away and knew that parents like me needed to understand the value to their college-bound kids.”

The informal discussions include information on potential educational and career options as well as how to maximize the high school experience to be prepared for college.

Four coffee chats, sponsored by Great Oaks Career Campuses and At The Core, are scheduled for southwest Ohio this winter. The chats are for parents of 6th-10th graders living in Great Oaks—affiliated school districts. They are:

    Loveland City Hall

Wednesday, January 15 – 6:30 to 8:00 pm: Loveland City Hall, 120 West Loveland Avenue, Council Chambers Room, Loveland, OH 45140

    Symmes Township Branch Library

Thursday, January 23 – 6:30 to 8:00 pm: Symmes Township Branch Library, 11850 Enyart Road, Meeting Room, Loveland, OH 45140

    Wyoming Library

Monday, January 27 – 6:00 to 7:30 pm: Wyoming Library, 500 Springfield Pike, Meeting Room, Cincinnati, OH 45215

The events are free but seating is limited. Registration is required at https://www.gettingatthecore.com/college-career-coffee-chats/. For more information about Great Oaks, go to hs.greatoaks.com.

Great Oaks Fire Academy earns state accreditation renewal

    Promoted Post

The Fire Academy at Great Oaks Career Campuses has earned a 3-year accreditation renewal from the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS (ODPS). The announcement was made after a recent site visit from an ODPS team in which Great Oaks met all requirements with no recommendations for improvement.

The accreditation renewal certifies that Great Oaks can provide firefighter, EMT, Fire and EMS Instructor, and Fire Inspector courses leading to state certification in those fields.

“The site team complimented the operations and outcomes of our programs, with some very specific comments on our first-time and cumulative pass rate—which is among the best in the state (among training facilities,” said Great Oaks Fire Safety Services Supervisor Johnny Mason. “They were also complimentary of the vision, support and environment that we have created for our students.”

The Fire Academy at Great Oaks Career Campuses prepares adults for careers in fire fighting, and also provides area fire departments and industries with additional training and education. The Great Oaks Fire Academy is also one of just 63 agencies in the United States that is ProBoard Certified.

For more information about the services offered at Great Oaks, contact Fire and Safety Services Supervisor Johnny Mason at 513.612.5834 or masonj@greatoaks.com.
