    Loveland, Ohio – “I am very honored and excited to represent Loveland at the summit and to further my professional development as we continue to advance the Business Department’s curriculum at Loveland High School,” said Lynnette Viox. “There is a strong interest in and demand for business courses among our students and this will benefit them as our program evolves.”

    Some 90 educators from 28 states across the country will gather in San Francisco for the third annual Next Gen Changemaker Summit in March. Viox, an applied technology and business teacher at Loveland High School (LHS) is one of six representatives from Ohio that will attend the conference.

    Participants at the Changemaker Summit are identified as educators who are working to achieve the Gold Standard in personal finance education in their schools and districts.

    According to Next Gen’s “Mission:2030”, schools achieving the Gold Standard ensure that all students take at least a semester-long personal finance class prior to graduation as part of the belief that all students deserve a financial education that will allow them to thrive in their personal lives beyond high school.

    “We are extremely excited about the opportunity to host such a talented and passionate group of educators for our third Annual Changemaker Summit,” said Tim Ranzetta, co-founder of Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF). “While 90% of students and parents believe that personal finance should be taught in high school, only 16% currently get it. This inspiring group of changemakers will close that gap.”

    Summit participants will have the opportunity to collaborate and will be provided new resources and ideas on how to engage students in their classes. Teacher-led sessions and panels will showcase the progress of increasing access to personal finance education nationwide and how to support teachers in the advocacy for this type of curriculum in their communities.

    Viox, who in addition to her teaching position at Loveland High School also serves as first vice-chair of the Loveland City School District’s Business Advisory Council, worked in business for 10 years prior to becoming a teacher. She has served as a coordinator for the Clermont County Mentor Program, as a member of the district’s “Innovation X” team and as the co-founder and co-leader of the LHS Link Crew, among others.

    Viox will be representing Ohio at the Changemaker Summit along with Judy Matey, (Tuslaw High School, Massillon), Katherine Blanton (Butler Tech, Fairfield Township), Mark Rairigh and Nathan Kee (Bryan Middle and High Schools, Bryan) and Molly Tyson (Lorain High School, Lorain). NGFP has underwritten the full cost of the conference for all attendees as part of its commitment to teacher professional development.

    Junior Achievement brings career pathway presentations to students at Loveland High School

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland High School (LHS) Counseling Department’s partnership with Junior Achievement is facilitating a series of presentations and Q&A opportunities for students to learn about local companies and the industries in which they operate. These Career Pathways presentations host representatives from a variety of companies who share knowledge and experience about their field, helping link the curriculum at Loveland with real-world opportunities and assisting students as they prepare for success after high school.

    “David Cook, senior vice president and chief human resource officer at TriHealth, recently spoke about career paths and success in the healthcare industry,” said Drews Mitchell, LHS Career and College Counselor. “It was eye opening for students to learn about the multitude of career options within healthcare – not only traditional medical pathways, but everything from culinary to information security and marketing careers.”

    Next up in the Career Pathways series was Steve Eder from Messer Construction, representing the Construction Industry, who spoke to students on February 10.

    Bonnie Curtis from the Castellini Group, representing the Transportation, Supply Chain and Logistics Industry, will speak to students on March 12.

    Pre-game interview: LHS Tigers headed to District Finals

    Loveland, Ohio – We wanted to let the community in on the excitement that is building as the Loveland High School Women’s Basketball team heads to the Division I District Finals tomorrow. Cassie Mattia went to the school Friday afternoon and interviewed Head Coach Darnell Parker and the team just before they were to begin their last practice before taking on Mount Notre Dame Saturday at 3 PM.

    They have put themselves in the position to beat the #3 team in the nation. MND is also rated the top team in Ohio.

    You will be needed as the 6th woman/man/girl/boy and that’s why we wanted you to meet the team. Both LHS and the community of Loveland encourage everyone to come out and show their support for the LHS Women’s Basketball team tomorrow as they continue to change school history!

    Game time is 3 PM and it will be played at Princeton High School in what is predicted to be a jam packed gym. (MAP 100 Viking Way, Cincinnati, Ohio.)

    Loveland, Ohio – It will be the Loveland Tigers vs. #1 seed Mount Notre Dame Saturday, February 29 at 3 PM (at Princeton H.S.).

    Mount Notre Dame defeated Edgewood 85-25 Monday night to get to the finals. MND is undefeated, ranked #1 in Ohio by MaxPreps, and has a #3 national ranking. The Tigers are the #6 seed and defeated Mason Monday night 55-41 to reach the District Finals. Loveland Tigers now 22-3 and Walnut Hills both from the ECC advanced Monday night.

    A strong 22-7 1st quarter with shots coming from every part of the court was too much for Mason to overcome.

    Senior Jillian Hayes led the Tigers with a game-high 20 points shooting 50% from the field. and 4-5 from the foul line. She had 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocked shots.

    Junior Jenna Batsch scored 17 on 7-9 shooting from the field. She had 5 rebounds, 3 assists. and blocked 2.

    Senior Kate Garry finished with 10 points, 6 coming from behind the 3-pt line, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

    MND is led by Sophomore 5’9″ forward K.K. Bransford who averages 20.2 points per game and scored 40 on the road against Lincoln Gahanna in October. Senior 5’6″ guard Makira Cook averages 17.6. and scored 27 against Huntington St. Joseph Academy on February 1.

    Loveland’s Hayes scored 27 in a December win over Walnut Hills.

    LHS’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach Reaches 100 Wins!

    Loveland, Ohio – As you walk the halls of Loveland High school it is not hard to feel the sense of community the students, teachers, and coaches have created! That sense of community doesn’t just linger in the hallways it’s also very present in both LHS’s academics and athletic programs. One athletic program, in particular, took that sense of community LHS created and implemented it into everything he and his team does. Darnell Parker, LHS’s head women’s basketball coach, wanted to keep that community mentality when he took over the team, but at the same time, he wanted that same mentality to set the women’s basketball program apart from all of the other athletic programs. That’s when #Ourway was created. This unique mindset has not only proven its success with the Loveland Women’s Basketball team’s win-loss record but has also created a lot of hype with all of the Loveland Tigers!

    “OurWay started out as more of a tag line slash cool hashtag, but over time it became a way of life for our program! It started back in year 1 with Jenna Stanton and Madi McDermott,” Parker explained, “We had a lot of strong seniors that year, but those two really grabbed ahold of this team in the offseason and set the tone for how we were going to go about our business day in and day out! Like our community, we didn’t want to be like the Mason’s or the Lakota’s we wanted to be great the Loveland way, and that is where OurWay came from.“

    The Loveland Women’s Basketball program celebrated a huge moment in history last Saturday winning their first ECC championship. The Lady Tigers finished the ECC regular season with a 13-1 record and a 19-3 record overall. And if winning an ECC title wasn’t enough for the Tigers, Coach Darnell Parker also celebrated quite the milestone this year reaching 100 wins.

    This highlight reel was put together by Team Photographer Gayle Rothmeeler to celebrate Coach Parker’s 100th win.

    “To be able to accomplish both of these milestones in the same season was unbelievable!,” Parker said, “But winning the league by far takes the cake! This is something that has never been done by Loveland in the ECC, and 17 years since the last league title of any kind in Women’s Basketball. Being able to see the absolute joy on our kids’ faces and from everyone in the crowd is what this is all about!“

    Coach Parker, who from a very young age knew basketball was his passion, began coaching summer basketball camps when he was a senior varsity point guard at Findlay High School. Parker earned both all-league and all-district accolades as a point guard at Findlay High School. After Parker graduated high school he continued his stellar basketball career at Bluffton University where he played all 4 years. At Bluffton Parker was given the team captain role and was awarded best defensive player his senior year. Parker graduated from Bluffton with a degree in Business Management and immediately decided to get back into the game he just couldn’t get enough of.

    Parker’s basketball coaching career started at Glen Este where he was selected to coach 6th-grade boys. For 9 years Parker successfully coached at Glen Este until Finneytown High School approached him with an opportunity to coach the Men’s JV team. While gaining experience in the men’s high school basketball circuit Parker again got an opportunity to coach but this time as the varsity head men’s basketball coach at Clermont Northeastern High School. Next on Parker’s superb coaching journey was at Clark Montessori High School where he took the position as the varsity men’s head basketball coach. At Clark Montessori, Parker made a name for himself and his team! In 2015 he not only won the Miami Valley Conference-Scarlet Championship he also was named Coach of the Year! While Parker coached at Clark Montessori he also coached AAU Basketball at Ohio Crossover Athletics gaining even more knowledge about the game of basketball.

    Parker coached for 3 years at Clark Montessori before making the transition to Loveland High School as an assistant varsity women’s basketball coach. After almost immediately making a huge impact on the Loveland Women’s Basketball program Parker was asked to take the varsity head coach position in 2017.

    Once Parker accepted the position he began working towards achieving the goals that he set for himself as a coach and the goals that the Loveland Women’s Basketball program had set as well. After 3 years of working towards some serious goals, this year Parker and his Lady Tigers not only grabbed their first ECC title ever in school history Parker himself also reached 100 wins and was named District 16 Coach of the Year! Parker said he couldn’t be more pleased with his team’s outstanding efforts this year and appreciates everyone that helped him get to this point in his coaching career.

    “There have been so many people that have contributed to me getting to this point, but first and foremost I have to thank God because, without him, none of this is possible,” Parker explained, “My Mom and my Dad to this day are my biggest cheerleaders and have been great! My two girls Alexis and Madison have sacrificed a lot of Dad time so that I could pursue my passion and I love them unconditionally for that! And to the Loveland community, thank you for accepting me as one of your own! This community has wrapped their arms around me and this program, THANK YOU! Lastly thank you to the coaching staff, Samantha, Keith, Wray Jean, Brad, and Mike. This is a team effort and these guys put up with me every single day and we wouldn’t be where we are without them,” Parker added.

    Coach Parker and his Lady Tigers have already taken the postseason tournament by storm grabbing their first win against Talawanda on February 13th with a score of 62-24. As if there wasn’t enough Loveland Women’s Basketball Tiger hype, Senior Jillian Hayes broke the All-Time Leading Scorer record, putting up 19 points for the Tiger win. Jilian Partin previously held the record with 1,356 points in 2005. Senior Kate Garry also holds an impressive record for the Tigers with the Most made 3 point shots in school history. This record was also previously held by Jilian Partin in 2005 with 65 made 3 point shots. Garry also holds the spot for the most 3 point shots made this year in the ECC.

    Two FIRST Tech Challenge Teams from Loveland High School Will Compete at the State Championship in March

    Nuts & Bolts (in orange shirts) and The Bionic Tigers (in black) have both qualified for the Ohio FIRST Tech Challenge Championship on March 14. The teams were part of the Cincinnati Qualifier’s Winning Alliance with Anderson’s Rising Tau.

    Loveland, Ohio – “It is really cool that this was the third year in a row that a Loveland team was part of the winning alliance at the Cincinnati Qualifier, and even more so, the second year in a row that both teams were on it,” said The Bionic Tigers’ Business Lead Mitchell McManis.

    Nuts & Bolts, top-ranked after five qualifying matches in the morning, picked The Bionic Tigers and Rising Tau from Anderson High School as alliance partners for the elimination rounds. The teams went on to the finals, where they won two matches and ended up crowned the competition’s Winning Alliance.

    Loveland High School’s FIRST Tech Challenge Teams 5040 (Nuts & Bolts) and 10464 (The Bionic Tigers) competed on January 25 at the Cincinnati Qualifier at Walnut Hills High School, where teams from Central and Southwest Ohio competed for three coveted advancement spots to the Ohio FIRSTTech Challenge Championship.

    Nuts & Bolts received the coveted first place Inspire Award and were finalists for the Connect and Think Awards. The Bionic Tigers received the Ohio Gracious Professionalism and Control Awards, and were finalists for the Design and Motivate Awards. The Bionic Tigers’ mentor, John Rasmussen, won the Compass Award.

    “We had a great time at the tournament,” said Nuts & Bolts Team Lead Ethan Astifan. “It was a ton of fun to win alongside our friends from our own school as well as from across Ohio, and it was really satisfying to see our hard work recognized by winning the Inspire Award.”

    Loveland, Ohio – With the end of January quickly approaching Loveland is preparing for one of the city’s most celebrated holidays, Valentine’s Day! For those who haven’t experienced the magic of Valentine’s Day in Loveland, you may be wondering why it is one of the most celebrated holidays. Well, other than the city itself being called “Love-land” it is also referenced to as the “Sweetheart of Ohio,” and for a VERY good reason! This year two very special “Sweethearts,” Debbie Murray and Lilly Hummer, were selected to join the historic Loveland Valentine’s Program. Of course, Loveland Magazine wanted to pay tribute by providing our readers with some Loveland Valentine history and an exclusive on-camera interview with Debbie and Lilly!

    This year two very special “Sweethearts,” Debbie Murray and Lilly Hummer, were selected to join the historic Loveland Valentine’s Program.

    The Loveland Valentine’s Program began in 1972 and quickly became a nationally-known cachet stamping and postmark program. Once the program was up and running the community of Loveland decided to broaden the program’s horizons adding more fun and exciting ways to spread love throughout the city. This included the addition of two very prestigious competitions, the selection of Loveland’s annual Valentine Lady and Loveland’s Valentine Card Design Contest.

    So what is a Valentine Lady? A Loveland Valentine Lady can be defined as “a woman who has distinguished themselves in the community, at local schools, and/or with family endeavors.” This lovely lady once selected is the ambassador for the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance’s Valentine program meaning she will spread both love and generosity by visiting area businesses, nursing homes, and schools. The Valentine Lady is chosen by the Loveland community and then picked by the LMR Chamber committee. In 1982 Loveland’s first Valentine Lady, Doris Pfiester was selected. Below is the list of Loveland’s past Valentine Ladies!

    Debbie Murray was announced on December 12th at Loveland’s legendary spot, The Works, as the 34th Valentine Lady! Murray has resided in Loveland since 1985 and is a highly decorated woman in all that she does for the community. Loveland’s 2018 Valentine Lady, Kay Bolin, when asked about Debbie Murray being selected as the 2020 Valentine Lady, had nothing but kind words to say about Murray!

    Debbie is indeed one of the nicest, most down to earth individuals you could ever meet.

    “I met Debbie Murray in 2018 when I was at that year’s, Loveland Valentine Lady celebration. As we all know, part of the Valentine Lady’s responsibility is to go around to the local schools, which is when I met Debbie as she was a teacher at Tender Years,” Bolin explained, “I have been fortunate to spend more time with Debbie since she has been selected. CeeCee Collins asked me to read one of the many nomination letters that the chamber received nominating Debbie for the 2020 Valentine Lady at the recent Valentine Lady kickoff event. I was honored and felt so fortunate to share this nomination letter to the community. Debbie is indeed one of the nicest, most down to earth individuals you could ever meet and what she has contributed to the Loveland community is wonderful. Deb is the definition of love and kindness! I am looking forward to personally getting to know Debbie better as well as seeing her continued contribution to our community. Debbie, we welcome you to our Valentine Lady Sisterhood!,” Bolin said.

    Lilly Hummer, a freshman Lacrosse player from Loveland High School, was recognized as Loveland’s Valentine’s Day card design winner.

    I’m sure everyone can agree that Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be what it is without a great Valentine’s Day card! The LMR Chamber realized this during the early stages of the Valentine’s Day Program so they decided to incorporate a Valentine’s Day Card Design Contest! The design contest is open to anyone in the Loveland community and the only stipulations are that the artwork must reflect or incorporate the theme: “Love is…..” and must also include (or provide space for) the phrase, “There is nothing in this world so sweet as love.” Allowing anyone in the Loveland community to participate in the design contest makes the contest itself both creative and diverse! There have been many great design winner’s in the past, one of them being Loveland Magazine’s very own David Miller.

    2020 marks one of the most creatively diverse card designs to date. Lilly Hummer, a freshman Lacrosse player from Loveland High School, was recognized as Loveland’s Valentine’s Day card design winner, on January 11th at the Valentine Kick-off at the Loveland Kroger’s.

    Hummer will receive design credit on the back of the 2020 Valentine’s Day cards, local recognition, media recognition and two complimentary invitations to the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance Annual Valentine Breakfast on February 14, 2020.     Loveland High School science teacher Amy Aspenwall to attend highly selective national teacher leadership training

    Loveland, Ohio – As one of only 20 teachers nationwide, Loveland High School Science Teacher Amy Aspenwall has been selected to attend the national teacher leadership training by EducationProjects.org in San Antonio, Texas, in February. The training will take place at the Commodity Classic, the nation’s largest agricultural trade show, and professional development event.

    “This is really exciting for me personally, but also for Loveland High School,” said Aspenwall. “It will provide leadership opportunities and allow collaboration with teachers around the country to identify and create new problem-based modules, flipped classroom materials, and science labs for our students.”

    It will also highlight the connection between the science they teach in the classroom and the application to food production and food security.

    EducationProjects.org has connected industry to the classroom for more than 20 years. The upcoming training, “Nourish the Future,” will introduce participants to the latest developments in water quality, sustainable agriculture, and 21st-century tools and technology in precision agriculture. It will allow teachers to take part in a curated tour of the trade show, with a focus on the science and engineering that support the production of food, fiber, and fuel. It will also highlight the connection between the science they teach in the classroom and the application to food production and food security. After the three-day event, teachers will continue to collaborate and access additional training through webinars and national and regional conferences.

    “Agriculture is an important aspect of our work and a great opportunity to engage students in concepts and activities that impact their own lives,” said Aspenwall.

    “Agriculture is an important aspect of our work and a great opportunity to engage students in concepts and activities that impact their own lives,” said Aspenwall. “When that connection is made, students are empowered to become more involved and engaged in environmental issues.”

    Loveland City School District and Amy Aspenwall receives Sustainability Award by local chamber in 2018

    Through the nomination of Aspenwall and her AP Environmental Science class at LHS, Loveland City Schools earned the Sustainability Award by the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance in 2018. The award recognized the work with students and the commitment to developing environmental leaders for the future. Aspenwall’s class continues to offer authentic, hands-on opportunities for students to understand issues like water quality and biodiversity, and allows them to develop innovative solutions to problems. The class was implemented at LHS in the fall of 2016 and was filled to capacity after only a couple of years.

    State of the Schools student-led open house is Wednesday, January 29

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District has invited the community to attend the 2019-20 State of the Schools student-led open house to experience the teaching and learning that takes place in the district.

    “This is the third consecutive year that we put our students front and center to lead the State of the Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Amy Crouse. “There really is no better way to illustrate education at Loveland. The students will showcase programs and activities that make the Portrait of a Tiger come alive, highlighting the skills they learn here.”

    You will have the opportunity to interact with students of all ages and there will be music performances by nationally recognized groups like the Loveland Show Choirs, Mallet Madness, and the Jazz Program. There will be robotics team demonstrations and a wide variety of exhibits and displays from the classrooms.

    In case of inclement weather, the events will take place on Thursday, February 6.

    The Student-led State of the Schools Open House is Wednesday, January 29, 6 until 7:30 PM at Loveland High School (1 Tiger Trail, Loveland, Ohio, 45140).

    Loveland, Ohio – “I decided to do Students of the Year because it sounded like fun, challanging, and rewarding,” said Sam Greenberg. He said he was excited to work with his friends to raise money for a worthwhile cause.

    Sam Greenberg, Jordan Sovik and Ben Westley – all seniors at Loveland High School accepted the challenge to be part of the 2020 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Students of the Year Campaign. 19 teams from across the region will be competing with the common goal of raising dollars for LLS and creating awareness about blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens.

    “The mission of the LLS is to cure blood cancers and improve the quality of life for patients and their families,” said Kathryn Rose, a teacher at Loveland Middle School. Rose serves on the LLS Student of the Year leadership team in Cincinnati and has been personally affected through the loss of a family member to blood cancer. “The Students of the Year campaign helps LLS’s mission, while also allowing students to gain invaluable experience through an advanced leadership and philanthropy program,” she said.

    Team CUREage has been at work for months, planning and meeting with business leaders in the area to discuss ideas for how to involve the whole community in the fundraising efforts. At this time, they have put nearly 30 events on the calendar, filling almost every day of the campaign with an opportunity to raise money for LLS.

    “These students make up an incredible team with their dedication and hard work,” said Rose. “They are amazing role models for younger students who will continue their legacy and create tradition here in Loveland.
