From the Website of Matthew 25: Ministries

Matthew 25: Ministries is responding to Hurricane Helene, which made landfall as an extremely dangerous category 4 storm with maximum winds of 140MPH on Thursday, September 26 near Perry, Florida. Helene is the strongest hurricane on record to slam into Florida’s Big Bend, causing unprecedented damage and flooding. The storm has resulted in over 100 fatalities and caused widespread devastation across the southeastern United States. Helene’s storm surge reached up to 15 feet in some areas along Florida’s coast, inundating coastal communities. Rainfall totals exceeded 15 inches in several states, with some parts of North Carolina receiving as much as 30 inches of rain, leading to catastrophic flooding. At the height of the power outages, over 4 million households were without power across Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. The storm continued to cause damages as it moved through the Carolinas and into the Ohio Valley.

In collaboration with Procter & Gamble and Walmart, Matthew 25: Ministries deployed our Disaster Response Team to Florida equipped with a range of fleet vehicles, including Tide Loads of Hope Mobile Laundry units, shower trailers, and co-branded panel trucks. The team is offering critical services such as laundry and shower facilities and distributing essential supplies, including personal care kits, baby products, paper goods, insect repellent, as well as additional items like garbage bags, cleaning supplies, and first aid and safety kits provided by Cintas to areas affected by the hurricane. Matthew 25 also deployed the Duracell PowerForward truck, equipped with up to 20,000 Duracell batteries as well as on-board charging stations for mobile devices.

To support immediate relief efforts in North Carolina, Matthew 25 is airlifting supplies for distribution to impacted areas. With support from partners like Kroger, Procter & Gamble, Prime, and Walmart, these supplies will include food, water, hydration drinks, baby formula, and diapers, enabling us to reach areas cut off from other forms of assistance and ensuring a sustained and comprehensive response.

Alongside deploying our Disaster Response teams and airlifting supplies, we are shipping truckloads of relief supplies to address the immediate and ongoing needs of those affected. Matthew 25 will continue these efforts for as long as the needs exist and we can respond efficiently and effectively.

“This is a hurricane of tremendous size and destructiveness,” said Tim Mettey, CEO of Matthew 25: Ministries. “I have been with our teams on prior disaster deployments and have seen the incredible damage these storms can cause. I have also seen the remarkable resilience of people after disasters. Their courage and determination is immense. With the help of our generous and caring partners, we are once again committed to bringing hope and providing the critical services and supplies needed to help these communities heal and rebuild.”

#TigerCare in action across Loveland, Cincinnati and around the world!

Loveland, Ohio – What began last school year with a couple of classes has grown into a building-wide student council on a mission of Tiger Care. Meet the newly formed Loveland Elementary School (LES) Kindness Council – with each third and fourth grade classroom represented and working toward monthly projects that create a Kindness Initiative throughout Loveland, Cincinnati and even across the world.

“This new structure is creating school-wide unity and making our projects bigger than they have ever been before,” said LES Teacher Melissa Prenger, who was one of the teacher sponsors for the Kindness Initiative last school year.

Prenger said students started the school year in September 2017 with a donation drive of personal care items to benefit Matthew 25: Ministries for hurricane survivors.

“We were able to collect so many items, we needed two large vehicles to deliver it all,” said Prenger.

“We were able to collect so many items, we needed two large vehicles to deliver it all,” said Prenger. “We collected socks again in October for Socktober. Because it was a school-wide initiative, we were able to collect over 3,000 pairs of socks to local homeless shelters in Cincinnati.”

The Kindness Council members and their families delivered the donations, making the initiative reach beyond the school building walls. In November, students supported Read to Feed; each student in the school had sponsors support them for a week of reading. The proceeds of their sponsorship allowed LES to donate nearly $4,000 to Loveland’s LIFE Food Pantry. In December, the entire school made cards for soldiers serving away from their families, as well as for nursing home residents. The Kindness Council also designed and sold Holiday Grams, enabling over $800 to be donated to the Adopt A U.S. Soldier program.

I’m incredibly proud of the students – they truly are spreading kindness, compassion, and empathy to not just the local community, but communities around the world.”

“During the months of January and February, we collected pop can pull tabs for The Ronald McDonald House,” said Prenger. “We will take them and see how many pounds we were able to collect – but it is a lot! We also collected winter care items, to create winter care bags to be distributed to the homeless of Cincinnati. I’m incredibly proud of the students – they truly are spreading kindness, compassion, and empathy to not just the local community, but communities around the world.”

LIS students put #TigerCare in action to raise more than $7,000 to build a well in South Sudan

Loveland Intermediate School students walked 1.2 miles carrying gallon jugs of water and raised more than $7,000 to combat the water crisis in Africa during a special lesson Friday, Oct. 20.

A ‘Long Walk’ to learn empathy

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland Intermediate School (LIS) sixth grade students walking the sidewalks of Loveland neighborhoods with gallon jugs of water in tow; it was not your typical classroom experience Friday, Oct. 20 – but it was a learning opportunity now in its fourth year. Called “Walk for Water” the students read the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, which is based on a true story about the difficulty to obtain clean water in Africa. The 1.2 miles the students walk – again, gallon jugs of water in tow – is symbolic; they carry the water to represent the very real water crisis in Africa.

“I continue this lesson each year because I think it is important to teach our students that there are many people in the world who struggle to survive each day and that we should always be grateful for what we have,” said LIS English Teacher Jennifer Kirby.

“I continue this lesson each year because I think it is important to teach our students that there are many people in the world who struggle to survive each day and that we should always be grateful for what we have,” said LIS English Teacher Jennifer Kirby. “For most of us, our worst day does not even come close to comparing to what people in less fortunate areas of the world struggle with.”

In addition to the walk, students raised $7382.06 to help build a well in South Sudan, surpassing the goal of $6,000. Students also donated about 400 gallons of water to Matthew 25: Ministries.

“Each year I continue to be amazed that our students take the main character, Salva’s, story to heart and go above and beyond the goal that we set,” said Kirby. “I hope that the take away for the students is that one person can make a difference. I hope they think of the children of the village where our well will be built and know that they have made the lives of those children and their families so much better.”

    Loveland Senior Service

Loveland, Ohio – The day began fairly typically for all 383 members of the Loveland High School (LHS) senior class – gathered in a room to listen and learn, the students heard from presenters about the importance of service. But, Wednesday, Oct. 11, was no ordinary lesson. It marked the sixth annual LHS Senior Service Day, and from 11:30 AM until 2 PM the students were tasked with volunteering at one of 14 Loveland and Cincinnati-area non-profit agencies.

“This is a learning opportunity we look forward to every year at Loveland High School – and that is not limited to the educators who are involved – our students see the seniors doing this and anticipate the day from the time they are freshmen in our building,” said LHS Principal Peggy Johnson. “It is our Tiger Care building goal in action. It does make a difference in our community. It will continue to influence how our students grow and develop as servant leaders. I want to thank LHS Teacher Brian Baugh for taking the leadership role in organizing the event this year for our students. It was a wonderful experience.”

“It is our Tiger Care building goal in action.”

Social media platforms turned into a real-time showcase for the community to see the learning that was taking place during the senior-chosen theme of Let’s come together as one to make a difference; seniors used the Twitter hashtag #383hearts to share their volunteer efforts, and Loveland Interim Superintendent Dr. Amy Crouse featured the service learning opportunities using Facebook Live from the district’s Facebook page (Loveland City Schools).

“What an amazing opportunity for us to show Tiger Care – one of our big three district goals – in action,” said Crouse. “This annual event is the very heart of what we are trying to teach our students – empathy. It is designed to create an atmosphere for our students to both lead and serve, and see the world – if only for a few hours – from the perspective of a neighbor who they otherwise might not have met.”

Students served the service day at the following agencies: Bethany House, Cincinnati Parks Ault Park, Dragonfly, Dress for Success, Grailville, Granny’s Garden, Little Miami River Cleanup, Matthew 25 Ministries, NEST Loveland Community Learning Center, New Life Furniture, QPR Training, Ronald McDonald House, SPCA and St. Francis Seraph School.

Loveland Elementary School students with supplies the Kindness Committee helped to collect for the district’s hurricane relief efforts.

Every building district-wide collected donations to send south

Loveland, Ohio – From a coin drive at Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) to thousands of items donated at Loveland Primary School (LPS), Loveland Elementary School (LES), Loveland Intermediate School (LIS), Loveland Middle School (LMS) and Loveland High School (LHS) – Tigers answered the call for help for hurricane survivors by joining together to support a collection drive for Matthew 25: Ministries.

“I want to personally recognize one of our high school students – Kailey Packer – for organizing the effort, and coordinating with all of the buildings in the district,” said LHS Principal Peggy Johnson. LHS had two truckloads of more than 500 baby items to deliver to Matthew 25.

LECC raised nearly $350 dollars, LPS collected 10 large bins full of supplies, LES needed 10 flatbed carts to load up their donations, and LIS and LMS combined collected more than 2,700 personal care items. LMS Principal Chuck Ogdan promoted the effort through Twitter, using a photograph of his own donation purchase to motivate LMS students to also help.

Loveland Middle School Principal Chuck Ogdan supported the hurricane relief collection drive through social media by posting his own donation purchase on Twitter to help motivate students.

“Lead by example,” said Ogdan. “Social media can be a powerful tool to let students know you do more than talk the talk. This was a really important show of support for our neighbors who were devastated by the hurricanes, and a good teaching opportunity to show students a real-life example of Tiger Care – which is one of our district goals.”

“As always, our students and their families showed Loveland cares,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Amy Crouse. “I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this Tiger Family.”

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland Magazine asked readers to send us information about ways our community can support relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey. Here are the responses.

    From Susan Grosse:

Red Cross plays a huge role in rescue and relief for disasters. The Cincinnati/Ohio Valley Chapter has many staff and volunteers with a high level of expertise. 19 from our region have already been deployed.

Monetary donations on the Red Cross website are preferred, are invaluable and go directly toward the relief effort budget.  Red Cross does not take in miscellaneous items from the public.  They use the power of the monetary donations to buy the absolute right items needed for the current disaster.  The monetary donations go a lot further because Red Cross can take advantage of reduced cost as they will buy in bulk.
