  • Miami Township: Shop with a Cop

Miami Township: Shop with a Cop

Miami Township, Ohio – The “Shop With A Cop” program allows children in the community, selected by the Miami Township Police Department, to shop with a police officer for Christmas gifts for their brothers, sisters or parents. While the program is not designed to allow the child to buy gifts for themselves, the police officers will often allow the child to pick something out if there are funds available.

“The children we select come from backgrounds where, through no fault of their own, they don’t get as much as a typical child in the community,” said Officer Skip Rasfeld, who is the Miami Township Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance and Education (DARE) officer in the local schools.

The Miami Township Police Department receives donations from local businesses and residents to help fund the event. About 16 uniform officers donate their time by showing up the night of event and walking the aisles with the children. More than 30 volunteers from the Miami Township Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and employees from the township also donate their time to wrap the presents for the children to take home.

Officer Rasfeld and the Miami Township Police Department are still seeking donations from businesses and residents for this year’s event.

Every cent of the donations is spent on the children and the department does not set aside any money from the donations for the supplies or administration involved in the program.

All donations should be made payable to the “Miami Township Police Association Shop with a Cop” and mailed to the Miami Township Police Department, 5900 McPicken Drive, Miami Township, OH 45150. Donations can also be dropped off in person. More information about the event can be obtained by calling Officer Rasfeld at (513) 248-3721 or sending an email Skip.Rasfeld@MiamiTwpOH.gov

Miami Township group will stop rush hour traffic by kneeling in silent prayer Friday

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been updated:

Miami Township, Ohio – The press release sent out by Lisa Kerwin, a Pastor at Epiphany United Methodist Church says, “On Friday, June 19, Epiphany and other SW Ohio UMC congregations will stop traffic by kneeling in silent prayer, offering peaceful protest and witness for 8:46 minutes to respectfully mark the tragic death of George Floyd and the many victims before him who have lost their lives to injustice.” The plan is to shut down roads at 6 PM this Friday afternoon.

The events are apparently planned around the region, however, the location for the civil disobedience in the Loveland area is the corner of Branch Hill-Guinea Pike and Loveland-Miamiville Roads. This is the Kroger and Walgreen intersection.

The press release calls it a “Peaceful Witness” event and further says, “The Miami Township Police Department and surrounding businesses are invited to attend and/or participate as a show of support.”

Loveland Magazine asked Kerwin, “Have you been given permission by Miami Township Police to shut down the road? Are people prepared to be given citations or go to jail?”

Kerwin responded Friday via email by saying, “We are not going to be arrested. We have police support. They will be there!!”

Loveland Magazine reached out to Miami Township Police Chief Mike Mills, and asked him if the organizers had been given permission to shut down this intersection. He responded this morning saying, “We, the police, cannot give permission to shut down the intersection. There is a process through the Township Government to apply for permits, but it is not a quick process.” Mills said that Kerwin had met with him and that they are reconvening this week to discuss logistics and a plan for a peaceful protest.

Mills added, “We are working with them to keep everyone safe and encouraging a peaceful protest in the right-of-way and the not the roadway.”

Loveland Magazine also asked the Chief, “According to the release, your department has been invited to ‘participate’. Will you or any of your officers join? Will you allow your officers to participate?”

Mills responded this morning by saying, “We will be there to make sure everyone is safe. Sometimes bad actors show up in support of one side or the other and distracts from the cause.”

When asked for his reaction to a plan to shut down the roads, Mills said, “We will support their 1st Amendment Right.”

The Loveland Police Department needs your help.

The Loveland Police Department needs your help. We are a team of 17 sworn police officers and 3 administrative members doing our best to serve our community of 13,000 residents, and even more visitors. Each year those 20 people answer more than 10,000 calls for service. We could not possibly do it without you. Together, we are partners working to keep Loveland great.

Each year LPD invites the community to learn about it’s police department and help make a difference in Loveland.

This year we will host the 20th Loveland Citizen’s Police Academy. Each year LPD invites the community to learn about it’s police department and help make a difference in Loveland. Over the years we have made many changes to the academy. Several years ago, we partnered with the Miami Township Police Department and the Milford Police Department to host a joint academy. This unique innovation is efficient, fosters collaboration between the agencies, and builds relationships that last.

    Do you want to:

Ride along with a police officer?

Watch a K9 search for drugs?

    Learn how a Taser works?

    Face down an armed aggressor?

Have you ever wanted to ride along with a police officer? Have you ever wanted to watch a K9 search for drugs? Maybe, you always wanted to know how a Taser works? Or maybe you always wanted to know what it feels like to face down an armed aggressor?

Graduate, and Loveland City Councilmember, Angela Settell said, “One of the most rewarding and educational experiences you will ever have is to attend the Loveland Citizen’s Police Academy. When I signed up for the class, I did not realize the lasting impression the dedicated men and women of our police force would have on me. Catching a glimpse of their duties and “standing in their shoes” during simulated crime scenarios gave me a greater understanding and appreciation of decisions they must make. That is why I fully support them and their ongoing training and equipment needs. I am proud to be a Graduate and member of the Alumni Association and urge you to experience for yourself. Sign up today!”

Join your neighbors at the 2018 Loveland Citizen’s Police Academy on Wednesday evenings September 5th though November 7th. Applications are available at: www.lovelandoh.gov/FormCenter.
