    Blue Ash, Ohio – In statements to the school community, the Sycamore District said:

    The Sycamore Family is deeply saddened by the loss of Sycamore High School’s beloved athletic director, Mark Harden. His passion, dedication, and spirit will forever be remembered.

    Harden 52, was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash on southbound I-75 Wednesday afternoon.

    The Greater Miami Athletic Conference said on X:

    It is with a heavy heart the Greater Miami Conference mourns the untimely passing of Sycamore Athletics Director Mark Harden. Mark was involved in auto accident this afternoon on I75 which took his life. His presence and leadership will be difficult to replace.

    Autism Society recognizes Loveland Schools’ Mary Frees as “Unsung Hero”

    Loveland, Ohio – The Regional Autism Advisory Council (RAAC) of Southwest Ohio celebrated its 20th anniversary in March with “Faces of Autism”- an event presented in collaboration with Autism Society Greater Cincinnati to recognize autism “ambassadors and unsung heroes” in the region. Mary Frees, an intervention specialist at Loveland Elementary School (LES), was among those honored for their work serving individuals with autism and their families.

    “When I learned about this special recognition, I was shocked, but felt so valued for doing what I love,” said Frees. “This just motivates and energizes me to continue to accomplish more for my students with autism and other special needs. My students make my job enjoyable each day and push me further to continue to learn more about this ever-changing field of special education.”

    The Faces of Autism Unsung Hero nominees were selected for going above and beyond the expectations of their jobs in advocating for acceptance, community inclusion, relationship building, and community impact. 12 educators were recognized, two of whom represent public school districts – Loveland and Sycamore Schools.

    “Mary is an outstanding educator who works tirelessly for her students, going above and beyond on a daily basis,” said LES Principal Jen Forren. “She works to ensure that her students and their families have an excellent experience at LES, both academically and socially.  She established an ambassador program that matches her students with other students in the building to help them work on their social skills and it has been very impactful for everyone involved.”

    Faces of Autism was presented by RAAC and the Autism Society Greater Cincinnati in partnership with several other organizations, including Cincinnati Children’s, Linden Grove School, and the Heidt Center of Excellence by The Children’s Home, among others.

    Loveland Board of Education to hold special meeting for superintendent selection Thursday

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland Board of Education plans to hold a special meeting at 6 PM Thursday, March 15, at the Loveland Intermediate School Media Center for the purpose of nominating and selecting the new superintendent of the Loveland City School District. In February, the Board announced three finalists for the position who each met with the administrative team, staff, and with the Loveland community.

    The new superintendent’s official duties will begin August 1. The vacancy is the result of the resignation of Chad Hilliker that was effective on July 31, 2017. At that time, Dr. Amy Crouse took over as interim superintendent for the district, and she continues to lead in that capacity.

    Sycamore and Country Day systems are experiencing high levels of influenza

    The Loveland District has not noticed any unusual flu-related illnesses, “Outside of a normal school year during flu season.”

    Schools in the Sycamore and Country Day systems are experiencing high levels of influenza (flu) and influenza-like illnesses, according to Hamilton County Public Health surveillance. Sycamore has reported 40 cases, while Country Day has reported 80.

     “As we all know, we are in the midst of a tough flu season,” says Hamilton County Health Commissioner, Tim Ingram.  “It’s important to remain vigilant and practice good prevention techniques, especially for seniors, the very young and school-aged children.”

    Vicki Falconi-Young, the District Nurse at Loveland High School told Loveland Magazine this morning that the District has not noticed any unusual flu-related illnesses, “Outside of a normal school year during flu season.”



    Hamilton County Public Health recommends:

    1. Get a flu vaccination
    2. Take everyday preventive actions, including:
      1. Stay away from sick people;
      2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
      3. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow;
      4. Wash hands frequently – clean hands prevent the spread of illness;
      5. Stay home if you are ill. In schools, separate sick children from the rest of the school population until they are able to get home. Keep children and staff home until they are without fever for 24 hours.
      6. For schools, clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces such as desks, door handles, keyboards, etc.
    3. Take antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

    According to the Health District, “It’s not too late to get vaccinated. As long as flu viruses are circulating, vaccination should continue throughout the flu season, even in February or later. There are many reasons to get a flu vaccine.”

    1. While flu vaccine can vary in how well it works, it is the best way to prevent flu illness and serious flu complications, including those that can result in hospitalization.
    2. Even with vaccine effectiveness in the range of 30 to 60 percent, flu vaccination prevents millions of illnesses and tens of thousands of flu-related hospitalizations each year.
