    9/11 will be remembered in Loveland Friday evening

    Loveland, Ohio – The murderous 9/11 attack by terrorists against the United States will be remembered this Friday at 8 PM at the Police and Fire Memorial in Historic Downtown.

    Two searchlights will be lit at dusk and a fireworks display will follow the ceremony.

    The Police and Fire Memorial is located at 200 Harrison Avenue, in the same block as Nisbet Park along the Loveland Bike Trail.

    In September of 2004, Vernon Michael, and son Don, place the 9/11 Memorial into the concrete foundation at the Loveland Police and Fire Memorial. Michael’s Pre-Cast Concrete manufactured the pedestal to the design specifications of David Camele (with tape measure). Sitting atop of the concrete base is a distorted and rusty piece of structural steel brought to Loveland from the scrap pile of the World Trade Center. Camele designed the memorial so the steel would “bleed rust” onto the fabricated concrete base. Camele, a Loveland resident also designed the Loveland Veterans’ Memorial in the West Loveland Historic District and the Joy of Youth Statute at the entrance to Loveland High School.

    The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

    The guest speaker is Ret. Lt Bruce Hoffbauer who is the 2020 Republican candidate for Hamilton County Sheriff.

    The evening is hosted by the Loveland Symmes Fire Department.

    Portman troubled by President Trump’s remarks at Helsinki Summit

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) issued the following statement regarding the joint news conference today by President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Helsinki Summit:

    “The president’s comments in today’s press conference were troubling. He failed to stand up to Vladimir Putin on some of the most critical security issues facing our country and our allies. There is a consensus in the intelligence community that Russia meddled in our elections and continues to try to destabilize democracies around the world. Both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees have concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections. When given the opportunity, President Trump did not hold President Putin to task for election meddling, for the illegal annexation of Crimea, or for the continued aggression in Eastern Ukraine. 

    “I believe the United States must be matter of fact and transparent. We all want to see a better relationship between our two countries, but we must make clear directly to President Putin and to the world that Russia’s actions on the world stage are unacceptable and a change in their behavior is necessary in order to improve relations. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and with this administration to do so.”

    HAVE TO SAY THIS: If I thought the NFL protests were a slap in the face to “our soldiers, our police officers, and our veterans” as some have claimed, I’d be right there with those who object.

    On Tuesday, October 9 the Press Secretary for our administrative branch of government said, “We support the national anthem, the flag, and the men and women who fought to defend it.”

    Well, I was proud to serve in the military. Never in harm’s way, but served on active duty for two years. I was a Drill Sergeant. Most of my …trainees went to Vietnam. They did not fight for a flag.

    Our nation’s flag is supposed to denote and identify our great country. IT IS A SYMBOL, NOT AN IDOL. It symbolizes this nation of people and the systems within which we live – including the good and the bad. Certainly, no one salutes the flag to honor what’s wrong in America, but the bad is part of American life just as it is globally.

    I can understand some of the confusion surrounding for whom the flag flies. Many Americans believe that the United States is the “greatest nation on earth.” That’s just not so and is, frankly, fake news. The one way in which we ARE far above all other nations is in military strength. So one might confuse the symbolism of our flag as being militaristic. But our flag is certainly not designed to represent any special segment of our citizenry. Most Americans do not serve in the military or law enforcement. Rather, the American flag it is a symbol of equality for all – among other ideals – for which we try to stand as a people. (And “equality for all” is also fake news.) 

    So, I do not see the NFL players disrespecting any individuals. No, they are trying the best they can to turn our collective attention to problems in our country that are morally abhorrent. I am pleased that some of them have been passionate enough to take risks and draw upon a large audience to make a statement that needs hearing (and seeing).

    We can continue as a nation to sweep problems under the rug on which we stand – or we can take a knee.
