    A Look At Loveland Spring Sports

    Loveland, Ohio – It is going to be a busy weekend for Loveland Tiger Athletes. Let’s catch up on how the spring sports teams are doing, and highlight some great individual performances!

    Loveland Softball

    Going into their game this evening against West Clermont, the Tigers sit at 1-1. They won their opener 11-9 over Anderson but dropped their next contest to little Miami 8-6.

    Boys Volleyball

    Loveland Boys Volleyball got off to a hot start at 2-1, beating both Fairfield and Turpin. They fell in five sets to Milford on the road in a very tough game. Their next game comes April 2 against Princeton.

    Carter Lucas leads the ECC in Kills with 37 while Freshman Gavin McWaters is fourth in the conference with 30. Clay Bebout and Colton Baker are 1-2 in the league in blocks, so the Tigers are well represented on the leaderboards for the ECC.

    Loveland Boy’s Lacrosse

    Loveland Boy’s Lacrosse lost its first three games out of the gate this year. But they bounced back in a big way against Anderson with a 12-0 victory. Luke Daugherty (So) and Adam King (Jr) paced the Tigers with three goals apiece. They take on Little Miami on April 2nd.

    Other Spring Sports

    Loveland Baseball’s first game is March 29th against Brecksville-Broadview. Girl’s Lacrosse has played one game, a close 10-7 loss to Anderson. Track and Field gets going in earnest in early April, and Boy’s Tennis will open their season against Elder on the 31st.

    OHSAA Adds Women’s Wrestling and Men’s Volleyball to Ohio’s High School’s Sports!

    Loveland, Ohio – Times are a-changing in the sports world! History was made in Columbus last Thursday when the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Board of Directors voted to add Women’s Wrestling and Men’s Volleyball officially as “emerging sports” in the 2022-2023 school year. 

    “The OHSAA recognizing men’s volleyball is a huge win for the sport and for everyone that has worked so hard to get the boys game recognized on the big stage in Ohio,” former Loveland High School JV “A” Team Head Coach Matthew Ellis said, “There are a lot of people who have coached boys club and boys high school that deserve a ton of praise for getting the ball rolling on this. Volleyball is a game for everyone and this is a big step in showing that.”

    Loveland Athletic Director Brian Conatser told Loveland Magazine on Friday, “That’s great. Obviously, we’ve had a very successful men’s volleyball program here at Loveland. We’re excited. What a great opportunity. I know that Head Coach Terri Swensen is super excited.”

    Men’s volleyball is not currently an Eastern Cincinnati Conference sport according to Conatser. He said that the Conference will have to vote on it. “I’ll be the first one to bring it up,” added Conatser laughing.

    The OHSAA Wrestling Coaches Association has held a Women’s wrestling tournament since 2020 and the OHSAA Men’s Volleyball Association has held its tournament since 1998 according to the OHSAA press release that was sent out on Thursday.

    “The OHSAA has been talking with the boy’s volleyball and girls wrestling leaders for several years and we are now in the position to bring these two sports into the OHSAA,” said OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute, “This move will help those sports continue to grow and allow those student-athletes to compete for an OHSAA state championship. It gives more kids opportunities and that is the mission of the OHSAA. We will look to keep a very similar format for the girls wrestling and boys volleyball tournaments as what the coaches associations have been doing,” Ute added, “The girls wrestling state tournament is held in mid-February and the boy’s volleyball state tournament is held in the spring. We have not yet developed tournament regulations, but we’ll start working on that so that those two sports hit the ground running next fall for the start of the 2022-23 school year.”

    Conatser said that Loveland has not had any female wrestlers in the past and that the sport is currently configured where females compete in whatever weight classification, Varsity or JV, they fit into with the current traditional high school’s program. Conatser said, “It’s actually co-ed now in Ohio. At Loveland, we’ve had some interested females in the past but none competed. I’m sure now that it is an OHSAA sport we will probably, and hopefully, we will see some females that will want to come out and participate.”

    Conatser said it will take some time to figure out how Loveland will handle coaching positions, etc. He said he assumed that females competing against males will continue until a transition to female-specific teams is organized. Currently, OHSAA has separate State tournaments for Women’s and Men’s wrestling competitions.

    OHSAA sports, with the new additions, officially has grown to 28, distributed evenly between men and women.

    OHSAA also announced on Thursday that they have plans to discuss providing an Esports tournament because gaming has grown exponentially in schools across the country over the last few years. OHSAA is actively looking to partner with a group that specializes in Esports.

Congratulations to all those who officially get to now compete within their high schools in these 2 new emerging OHSAA sports!     OHSAA Announces Shortened HS Football Season Proposal

    OHSAA adjusts high school season if football is approved by Governor

    COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Governor’s recommendation to shorten Ohio’s High School Football seasons has been approved! The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) announced Friday that due to concerns COVID-19 may spike in the early winter, all Ohio HS football teams will enter into the playoffs on October 9th. The HS State Championship games would be played no later than November 21st. This is only in the event that the Governor’s Office approves Ohio HS Football being played this year.

    The proposal for a shorter football regular season was approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors with a 9-0 vote. OHSAA released a press release after the vote saying that they considered the proposal a win-win situation for all schools because it would then not matter how many games each team played leading up to the playoffs.

    So how will it be determined which HS football teams qualify for the playoffs you may be asking yourself? Well, instead of using the traditional computer ratings system, coaches in each region will conduct a tournament seed meeting the week of September 28th in order to form the regional brackets. This is very similar to how several other team sports within the OHSAA determine which teams qualify for playoffs.

    Loveland High School is apart of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.

    The shortened football season guidelines state that schools may keep their first six previously scheduled games, but all regular-season football contracts will be now voidable by either school. This is especially important in the event that conferences redo their league schedules so that games will fit into the first six weeks. The OHSAA will also determine new playoff regions in September. Teams that are eliminated from the playoffs may continue to schedule regular-season games up until November 14.

    MAC Announces Postponement of Fall Sports

    The Mid-American Conference (MAC) has announced the postponement of all scheduled fall contests, as well as MAC championships, due to continuing concerns related to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Read on…

    The Big 10 is expected to announce the cancelation of the Fall football season on Tuesday.

    Those schools that have paused sports due to COVID-19 are still able to begin their season in September or early October as well as compete in the playoffs. If a school finds that they would rather play regular-season games up until November 14th and not compete in playoffs they are able to do so.

    “To both ensure we can offer students the opportunity to participate in education-based athletics but do so with their best interests in mind, we believe this modified plan offers a positive solution by addressing many of the concerns of our member schools,” President of the OHSAA Board of Directors and Athletic Administrator at Mentor High School, Jeff Cassella said, “Those that are able to start their seasons on time will be able to do so. Those that are starting later can still have a season. Add in the option of all schools entering the playoffs and the possibility of schools still being able to play 10 regular-season contests, and this plan is helpful to virtually all of our schools.”

    Here are the most important details in regards to the OHSAA’s modified Ohio HS Football season and changes to the Playoffs process:

    • Regular-season games will begin the week of August 24 (same regular-season starting date).
    • All teams are eligible to enter the OHSAA playoffs. New regions will be determined in September.
    • The number of playoff rounds is dependent upon the number of schools entering the playoffs in each division. Coaches in each region will seed all playoff teams in the region to form a bracket, similar to other OHSAA sports.
    • Schools eliminated from the OHSAA playoffs or those schools that choose not to enter the OHSAA playoffs have the option to schedule additional regular-season contests through Saturday, November 14 (maximum of 10 regular season contests permitted).
    • Playoff seeding will be determined via a vote of the coaches the week of September 28 (Harbin Ratings is suspended for the 2020 season).
    • All playoff contests through the regional semifinals (and possibly the regional finals) will be hosted by the higher-seeded team.
    • Schools must commit to participating in the playoffs by 11:59 PM on Thursday, September 17.
    • Playoff regions will be drawn on Friday, September 18.
    • Schools may withdraw from the playoffs without a penalty until Thursday, September 24.

    Below is what the new modified Ohio HS Football season will look like:

    • Regular season Week 1:  Week of August 24
    • Regular season Week 2:  Week of August 31
    • Regular season Week 3:  Week of September 7
    • Regular season Week 4:  Week of September 14
    • Regular season Week 5:  Week of September 21
    • Regular season Week 6:  Week of September 28
    • Playoffs begin Friday, October 9
    • State Finals end no later than Saturday, Nov. 21

    Thus far the decision on whether or not spectators will be allowed to be present at contact sports this year has not been made yet. The OHSAA stated that “At a minimum, parents should be permitted to attend.”

    Luckily four of the OHSAA’s Fall sports, golf, tennis, volleyball, and cross country, have been determined to be low-contact by the Governor’s Office which means these particular sports will be permitted to have contests with other schools. The remaining Fall sports, field hockey, soccer, and football, have been determined to be high-contact, so the OHSAA, the Governor’s Office and the Ohio Department of Health are working together to create a safe game plan so that these three sports may participate in contests with other schools as well.

    Loveland Tigers Sports Teams Continue Their Runs For ECC Titles!

    Loveland, Ohio – As Fall quickly approaches so does ECC postseason tournaments! Loveland High School Tiger teams gave everything they had this week in order to improve their ECC standings and in saying that there were some very impressive league battles! Here’s the Loveland Sports 411 with Cassie Mattia for September 16th through the 22nd!

    Golf

    The Loveland Tigers Boys Golf Team competed in 3 golf meets this week proving that their swings are not to be messed with! Tuesday the 17th the boys went to Wyoming Golf Course where they won 167 to 168 and on Wednesday the 18th they traveled to Mason where the Tigers won 152 to 156. On Thursday the 19th the Tigers went to Friendly Meadows Golf Course to compete against West Clermont and grabbed another victory 154 to 208. The Boys Golf Team is currently in 2nd place in the ECC with a 4-1 record. The Tigers are 9-2 overall. The golf team will continue their successful season on Tuesday the 24th at Ivy Hills against Turpin and then will compete in the ECC Postseason Tournament at Glenview on Thursday the 26th.

    The Girls Tigers Golf Team competed at West Clermont on Tuesday the 17th and pulled out a victory, 192 to 228. The ladies had a great time swinging away the competition as pictured below in these tweets captured by fans of the Tigers!

    The Girls Golf Team will be heading to Hickory Woods on Tuesday the 24th to face Turpin at 3:30 PM and then will turn around and travel to O’Bannon Creek Golf Club to compete against Lakota West and Ursuline at 4 PM. The Tigers are currently 2-3 in the ECC and 2-7 overall.

    Volleyball

    The Girls Volleyball Team had an unbelievable week of competition grabbing two wins, pushing their record to 7-1 in the ECC placing them in 1st place! The Tigers are 12-2 overall. On Tuesday the 17th the ladies played West Clermont in their home gym. The Tigers won all the sets at West Clermont 25-13, 25-21, and 25-12. On Thursday the 19th the ladies traveled to Anderson and claimed another victory again winning in 3 sets, 25-16, 25-21, and 25-21.

    The Girls Volleyball Team hopes to keep their number 1 spot in the ECC this week as they will be playing Kings on Tuesday the 24th at home at 6:30 PM and Walnut Hills on Wednesday the 25th at 6:30 PM at home.

    Tennis

    Another lady Tigers Team that had a really successful week of competition is the Girls Tennis Team who improved their record to 5-1 in the ECC and 15-2 overall. The Tigers now hold the 2nd place spot in the ECC. On Monday the 16th the Girls Tennis Team grabbed a win against Anderson sweeping them 5-0 then the ladies turned around on Tuesday the 17th and claimed another victory against West Clermont beating them 5-0. The Tigers continued their winning streak when they played CCD on Wednesday the 18th beating them 5-0. On Thursday the 19th and Saturday the 21st the Girls Tennis Team participated in the GCTCA Coaches Classic. Although they didn’t necessarily place at the top as a team there were some fantastic performances by the lady Tigers! Freshmen Babs Dwyer and Alex Hytree placed 3rd for Second Doubles and Freshman Maira Hodar placed 3rd in Singles.     The Girls Tennis Team will represent Loveland in the ECC Tournament this week on Tuesday the 24th beginning at 9 AM at Lunken.

    Soccer

    The Boys Soccer Team grabbed both a loss and a win this week. The Tigers still remain number 1 in the ECC with a 4-0 record and an 8-3 record overall! On Wednesday the 18th the Boys Soccer Team went to Centerville to compete unfortunately losing a hard-fought battle 3-1. On Thursday the 19th the Boys answered back with a big win at Withrow beating them 9-0. Out of those 9 goals Emmett Webb pulled off a hat trick (3 goals) all in the first half! The Tigers will face Walnut Hills at their home field on Wednesday the 25th at 7 PM and on Saturday the 28th will play Mason on the Tigers home field at noon.

    The Girls Soccer Team, who currently holds the 2nd spot in the ECC with a 2-1 league record and 5-3 overall record, hosted the 1st Annual LOMO Event Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd. Both Loveland and Mason Girls Soccer Teams came together for this 2-day 10 game event!     The LOMO event started for the Girls Soccer Team at 7 PM on Saturday the 21st when they faced West Jessamine, a 2 time Kentucky State Champion Soccer Team.     The Girls Soccer Team was surrounded by quite the crowd as they claimed a HUGE victory against West Jessamine winning 5-0! Shraya Smolenski was the leading scorer for the Tigers kicking in 2 goals making her now 6th in the ECC as an Offensive Leader. Many action shots were caught on Twitter at the Orange Out!

    The Girls Soccer Team took on Notre Dame Academy Kentucky, another premier Kentucky soccer team, on Sunday the 22nd at 3 PM at the Tiger Stadium and pulled out yet another big win, beating Notre Dame 2-0! The Tigers victory was captured on Instagram by Loveland Athletics below!

    Football

    The Loveland Tigers Football Team battled Friday night at Withrow but unfortunately ended the game with a loss, 39-0.

    After Friday’s game, Tiger Calvin Cloud claimed the 5th spot in the ECC with 518 Offensive Passing Yards! The Tigers will be apart of a very special game on Friday the 27th as it is Loveland’s Homecoming.     Cheer

    In Loveland Cheer news the team will be holding winter cheer mascot tryouts on Wednesday, November 6th from 6 PM to 9 PM and then again on Thursday, November 7th beginning at 6:30 PM. The tryouts will be held at Loveland High School. 

    Cross Country

    The Girls and Boys Cross Country Team put on some great performances on Saturday the 21st at one of the top meets in Ohio, Centerville’s Saturday Night Lights Meet. Leading the way for the girls was Sarah Madix (3rd), followed by Ellie Carr (5th), Jessie Gibbins (6th), Ansley Richards (7th), and Nami Cannon (10th). Rounding out the top 7 were Ally Colegate (16th) and Bella Dillhoff (17th). Below are photos captured from the meet Saturday!

    The Boys Cross Country Team had just as much success at Centerville’s Saturday Night Lights Meet finishing 11th out 23 teams with 335 points! The first finisher for the Tigers was sophomore Ryan Chevalier crossing the finish line for the 40th spot running a 16:35. Chevalier still holds the 4th best time in the ECC after running a 16:28 at the Loveland Invitational. Next Tiger to finish the race was freshman Brady Steiner placing 61st with a 16:52. Steiner ran his personal best time for the year placing him 8th in the ECC with his time! The next Loveland Boys to cross the finish line were senior Kyle Griffin taking the 72nd spot running a 16:59, junior Ajay Stutz in 78th place with a 17:03, senior Alex Ditchen placing 84th with a 17:07, sophomore Sam Neiger placing 89th with a time of 17:08, and rounding up the top 7 Tiger finishers was sophomore Sam Dippold placing 112th with a 17:24. 6 of the Loveland Boys ran seasonal best times placing them in the top 20 in the ECC for their 5k times!

    This week’s Loveland Tiger sports up-date

    Loveland, Ohio – The Regular Season for most of Loveland Fall Sports are coming to a close and Postseason is just getting started. Some of Loveland’s Fall Sports teams look to have repeat success while others look to finally achieve a milestone after many hours of hard work during the offseason and season.

    Womens Tennis

    Senior, Peyton Beller and Junior, Anna Svitkovich both made it to Districts as Single’s Players. In the District seeding matches Peyton took 2nd and Anna took 3rd. Peyton will begin her District appearance against Beavercreek’s, Julia Bays. If Peyton wins the first round she will play either Xia Lin from Butler or Savannah Allen from Turpin to get to State. Anna will start off against Greenville’s, Natalie Milligan. If Anna advances past the first round she will either play Claire Burns from Wilmington or Caitlin Fisher from Turpin. The District Tournament will begin today and continue on Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

    Mens Golf

    The Loveland Mens Golf team finished 5th in Sectionals losing to Anderson by 2 strokes, just missing advancing to Districts as a team. The Mens Golf team does have a member of their team advancing to Districts and that would be Junior, Jeffrey Main. Jeffrey earned Co-Medalist honors at Sectionals shooting a 71 at The Vineyard Golf Course. The District Golf Tournament will be held today at the Beavercreek Golf Club. Jeffrey will be teeing off at 10:50 AM with Alex Gomia of Monroe, Tyler Goecke of Carroll, and Riley Wilcoxon of Bellefontaine.

    Womens Soccer

    The defending State Champion, Loveland Womens Soccer team won the 2018 ECC title with a 6-0-1 record. This was the teams fifth title in the last six years. Their overall record is 11-1-3. The Tigers are #1 in the Cincinnati area coaches pool.

    They will play either Colerain (#20) or Western Brown (#23) on October 20th in their opening round matchup of the State tournament. If they win that game they will play either Sycamore (#9), Middletown (#27), or Withrow (#31). Their next game is a non-conference match Saturday vs Lebanon on Senior Night at 7:00 PM.

    Volleyball

    Currently undefeated in conference play (13-0), Loveland captured its second consecutive ECC championship. The Tigers have won their first 13 ECC matches and sit at 19-1 overall. Their Senior Night is Thursday, October 11 against conference foe West Clermont at 7 PM.

    Their Sectional match-up is vs. Western Hills October 16 at 6:30 PM.

    Football

    The Tigers are #6 in the ECC with a 1-3, 1-6 record. They play at #7 Walnut Hills on Friday at 7 PM. Then they will have 2 games remaining, at Kings on October 19, and their Senior Night is October  26 vs. Anderson.

    “It is an emotional experience for all involved,” said Loveland Interim Athletic Director Brian Conatser.

    Loveland, Ohio – In this LOVELAND MAGAZINE TV VIDEO Loveland High School Interim Athletic Director, Brian Conatser honored seven student-athletes on April  11 who committed to advance their educational and athletic careers to the next level during the LHS Athletic Spring Signing Day in the LHS Gym. Students were surrounded by family members, coaches, and friends as they announced their intentions and signed papers formalizing their intent.

    “It is an emotional experience for all involved,” said Loveland Interim Athletic Director Brian Conatser. “This is a moment many of these students have been working toward nearly their entire tenure as students, and these are the people who have cheered them on each step of the way. We are incredibly proud of what they have accomplished, and we wish them all the best.”

    Loveland, Ohio – These © 2017 Loveland Magazine photos were taken at the womens varsity volleyball game on Saturday, September 30 in the Tiger Gym against Mount Notre Dame.

    The Tigers finished the regular season 14-0 in the ECC and 20-2 overall with a win Saturday, October 14 by beating Oak Hills 25-12, 25-23, 25-16. They won the ECC Championship for the second time in the last six years.

    Postseason play begins on October 21 for the Tigers after a first-round bye. They will play either Fairfield (13-7) or Edgewood (9-10) at Lakota West High School at 1:30 PM. View the Vandalia 1 District bracket at the bottom of this story.

    Last Friday, Loveland fell to Anderson in a narrow 28-27 loss. This puts Loveland in the middle of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference with 1-2 win-loss. Overall, the team is now 1-5.

    Women’s volleyball

    Loveland continued their undefeated conference season last week, beating Kings 25-13, 23-25, 25-15 and 27-25 along with Milford 25-22, 25-20 and 25-12. The team remains in first in the ECC with a 10-0 win-loss conference season and 15-1 overall.

    Loveland sits in third in the ECC with a 4-2 win-loss record in conference and 9-8 overall. Last week, Loveland defeated Fairfield 3-2, fell to Sycamore 3-2 and fell to Mason 4-1. The team will play their last game this season on Tuesday the 3rd.

    On May 6, 2011, a man broke into my daughter’s home. He forever changed all of our lives that day. He hid in the dark early morning hours, and forced his way in. This man attacked my daughter, stabbing her multiple times. Her brother, Danny, heard her screams, and ran to her aid, changing his life forever.

    I’d tried all morning to get my daughter, and then my son, by phone, text, and email. It was very unusual not hearing from them. Concerned, I called my husband, who was working at a job site, and told him. I thought I was being paranoid, but he needed to go check on them. He proceeded to pack up his gear.

    In the mean time, my children’s one year old shepherd had barked for 6 hours straight. This puppy woke my daughter, Kelly. Her barking saved our son’s life. My daughter called me, knowing she was sick and hurt, but not what was wrong. My daughter fought blood loss and multiple injuries to make that call. That call saved both of their lives. My youngest son, Kyle, got home, and I sent him too. He and his dad, Jim, got there right behind each other. I sent them into a nightmare, neither will ever forget. Things like this just don’t happen in real life. It’s too horrid to be real; but it is.

    I’ve been told it’s the worst crime scene the police and EMTs had ever seen. My two children laid in pools of their own blood for 6 hours before help arrived. They were stabbed in the brain, chest, neck, and arm. Once I heard from Jim, he told me to go to UC Hospital because my children would be aircared there.

    Danny had to be resuscitated at sight. He barely made it to Mercy Fairfield Hospital. Aircare picked him up there. At that time, my daughter was already at UC Hospital, arriving by aircare. I was told she would have brain surgery, and then turned around and was told Danny had arrived and would be having brain surgery. Can you even imagine?

    After receiving that news, I had to call my other son, Ryan (a US Army MP). He was stationed in Seattle after being deployed in Iraq for a year and a half. I had to tell him we didn’t know if they would live or not, it didn’t look good, and to get home as fast as he could.

    Because this was a high profile case, we were told by law enforcement to not talk to anyone, and were placed on lock down. We were asked to maintain our silence. We did. We talked to no one, and just waited to see if our children would live.

    Our daughter, Kelly, is an assistant prosecutor for Butler County. She is back to work, working to reclaim her life. We try to shield her from the curious. 

    Because of our silence no one knows how badly our son, Danny, was hurt. Danny was stabbed 19 times in the brain. His right hand had multiple defense wounds.

    His tendons were severed. He was kicked so hard his spleen was lacerated. Danny’s injuries have been compared to Congress Woman Gabby Gifford. His skull was so crushed it took a year, minus 2 days, to get a skull cap replacement in. Danny has had 5 surgeries in the last year. Now we’re fighting to get his life back.

    Danny has aphasia, which means he has trouble talking, reading, and writing,devastating to a young man who had just finished law school. He wanted to be a defense attorney, to make a difference. Danny used to play the drums, but can no longer use his right arm. Danny walks with a limp, but he walks two miles every day.

     

    Danny is our hero. He saved our daughter’s life, but at a great cost. Danny loves sports. He played baseball, football, and soccer. He loved to read, and play the drums. He’s lost it all.

    His attacker was trained in the martial art tai chi. He brought a weapon called a skull crusher with him. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison for destroying a life and forever changing our family’s lives.

    I’m writing to ask for your help. Danny has Anthem insurance. They pay for 30 therapies a year. We got him on Medicaid, and they pay for 20 a year. Mercy Hospital is helping, but only for three therapies a week. We’re told for Danny to get better he needs more, closer to 9 therapy sessions each week. He takes Speech, Occupational, and Physical therapy 3 times each week now. We’re to send him to the University of Michigan UMAP program for speech. It’s around $27,000 for 4-5 weeks of therapy, and his insurance doesn’t pay for this. His doctors and therapists say he could need to go several times. Room and board for Danny and his caregiver (his dad will go with him) is not included in the cost. Neither is the cost of the other ongoing two therapies, physical and occupational.

    I’ve never asked anyone for anything. My husband and I have worked since we were young teens, but I’m asking for help now. Can you help my son?

    Danny’s therapy is working ! But it comes with a very high price. We’ve cut every corner we can. The cost is still over $36,000/ year.

    Danny continued to improve. His therapist say, Danny injuries can take years to improve from.
