Your brakes are the key safety system on your vehicle. That brings up the question…

“How do I know if my brakes need service or repair?”

There are 5 things to look for when it comes to braking system function and repair:

Sound

Are you experiencing any abnormal noise while braking such as grinding, rubbing, or squealing? This is your brake system’s way of communicating that there is a potential concern. Please have the vehicle inspected.

Vibration

Is your brake pedal, steering wheel, or seat vibrating while braking? This may indicate a malfunction in the braking system. This concern can be related to warped brake rotors or other faulty components.

Lights

Are there warning indicators in the message center or instrument cluster? Today’s vehicles are high-tech, and some vehicles will even have brake pad thickness indicators built into the system. Other vehicles may utilize a red brake warning indicator combined with an antilock brake system (ABS) warning lamp. All of these indicators mean your automobile’s brake system has detected a malfunction and requires attention.

Feel

Is your vehicle’s brake pedal exhibiting abnormal signs such as high effort or going to the floor while braking? If so, this is a good indicator that you need to seek service.

Smell

These are also telltale signs of possible service needs in the braking system.

In addition, the brake fluid is a silent component of the braking system that is often overlooked. It should be checked for integrity during regular service checks.

Brakes are comprised of several sophisticated components and all repairs should be completed by a qualified professional service technician. If you think any of the above concerns are present on your vehicle, call your local brake replacement team at Christian Brothers Automotive – Loveland.  In our next column, we’ll discuss the difference in brake pad material and what options are best suited for your vehicle.
