    Congratulations, Quinn and Margaret!

Loveland, Ohio – “The Loveland Music Boosters are thrilled to congratulate Loveland High School students Margaret Eilert and Quinn Caney for their outstanding musical talent and program participation, thereby earning the Maegly Music Scholarship Award,” said Booster President, Traci Scarpa.

acct-plus-sidebarCaney, a sophomore at Loveland High School (LHS), was awarded the scholarship on October 21st at his Band Concert. He is a member of the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra. Quinn plans to use the scholarship to take additional private music lessons on both the trumpet and the trombone.

Eilert, a junior at LHS, was presented the scholarship on October 22nd at her Choir Concert.  She is a member of the Chamber Orchestra and Loveland Show Choir “By Request” and “Allure” groups. She is also taking classes in guitar and AP Music theory to broaden her musical skills. Eilert intends to use the scholarship to attend a performing arts camp this summer called Show Choir Camps of America.

The Music Boosters established the Maegly Music Scholarship Award to honor former teacher, Bruce Maegly, “To recognize his 35-year contribution to developing the musical talents and enthusiasm of generations of Loveland students.”

Scarpa said, “The intent of the scholarship is to foster musical development in current students, just like Mr. Maegly did while teaching – by awarding funds to offset skill building expenses.”

Caney said he was going to study music education at U.C.’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). He said that when the announcement was made, everyone around him said he had a look of shock on his face like, what? What do I do now? “So, I just went up there and enjoyed the presentation.” Caney was a former student of Maegly. He described him as a great teacher. “My private instructor told me, you can’t get any better than Mr. Maegly.”[pull_quote_right]“My private instructor told me, you can’t get any better than Mr. Maegly.”[/pull_quote_right]

Eilert also plans on studying music education, but is un-decided about where she will study. She said while at the choir concert, her teacher said, “Come, stand over here.” She had no idea, what it was for. Then when they started talking about Maegly she realized she had won the scholarship. She said, “I was shocked and I am really excited about it.”

The Loveland Music Boosters established the Maegly Music Scholarship Award in 2014. Award recipients are able to use the funds to offset the costs of individual musical instruction, including private music lessons or special musical performance learning opportunities (musical camps, master classes, seminars). Eligible expenses for reimbursement also include direct out-of-pocket costs related to a musical development opportunity.

Scarpa said, “This scholarship continues the legacy of Bruce Maegly with these next two winners. The Boosters wish Quinn and Margaret every success as they continue to develop their musical skills and look forward to seeing the results of their hard work in the coming years”

    Dear Loveland Magazine Readers,

On clear December nights, I often look up and am reminded of how much my beautiful Dylan loved the moon.

shp-3-years-dylanGoodnight Moon was his favorite book, one we cuddled together to read more times than I can remember. I would do anything to be able to snuggle up again with Dylan and recite the final “good night stars, goodnight air, goodnight noises everywhere” together – to not have to mark another year without him.

But I know nothing can bring back Dylan and all the other precious lives lost to gun violence. We can only change what happens next.

Next for Sandy Hook Promise is a major expansion of our no-cost, lifesaving programs to thousands more schools and communities. I’m proud to tell you we protected nearly 350,000 children this year with our trainings – and we want to reach one million in 2016.

I wish I didn’t have to ask for your support again – but to protect more children and stay on track for our year-end goal we have to raise $100,000 by Monday. In honor of Dylan and so many other families who’ve lost loved ones, please contribute what you can now.

Click here to make your tax-deductible gift of $25 or more to Sandy Hook Promise now. Help us reach Monday’s goal so we can expand our programs to protect more children from gun violence in 2016.

Despite the frightening frequency of shootings this year, there have been glimmers of hope. We’ve seen tragedies averted because people – including teens, who are often stronger and braver than we give them credit for – saw something and spoke up. Communities are taking notice – and asking Sandy Hook Promise to bring our programs to their states.[quote_right]It will never get easier. I will never stop missing Dylan’s smell, his laugh, his love of chocolate, his hugs and the way he loved the moon[/quote_right]

One such community is the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. The country’s fourth-largest school district has partnered with Sandy Hook Promise to bring our prevention programs to its schools – to protect as many as 345,000 students and 14,000 employees – beginning in early 2016.

And, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve also had requests from Washington state, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Illinois and others. We offer our programs and materials free of charge to schools and communities to encourage participation, so I know we can expect a lot more requests – but we simply can’t fund and run them all successfully without your contribution now. Please, will you help us make Monday’s goal so we can protect more children in 2016?

Click here to make your 100% tax-deductible gift to Sandy Hook Promise now.

I dreaded December 14. Whether we’re marking three, six, 10 or 30 years without our precious butterfly, it will never get easier. I will never stop missing Dylan’s smell, his laugh, his love of chocolate, his hugs and the way he loved the moon.

I’m so grateful for every day he was with us. And I will never stop working to make sure his short life meant something. With your support, I know we’re doing just that. Thank you for all you do to lift our community and create a safer world for all of our children.

    With love,

    Nicole Hockley (Dylan’s mom)

These are the places where weather history suggests you want to be if you’re looking for the best chance of a white Christmas.

  • Loveland Youth Volleyball Organization starts 2nd season

Loveland Youth Volleyball Organization starts 2nd season

Registration for 2016 season is OPEN now till Feb 1

Loveland, Ohio – Spring of 2016 will begin the second season for Loveland Youth Volleyball (LYVO). Co-Chair, Megan Graff said, “The organization was created with one mission in mind – to provide a fun, learning, recreational environment for the youth of Loveland to play, learn and practice volleyball. This goal reaches far beyond the court. This is giving the youth of Loveland another chance to try a new sport, learn to work as a team and get active.”

Loveland Youth Volleyball Organization is a Non-Profit run by a board of volunteers. It is open to any jarvis-verticalchild living in the Loveland School District in grades 3-8. Coaches are comprised of volunteers who are given the opportunity to go through a coaching session with veteran coaches. They are also given a packet with drills, ideas and tips to help the season run smoothly. “All coaches will be background checked for this coming season and all seasons in the future,” said Graff.

Teams are formed based on prior evaluations for previous players and an evaluation day will be set up for all new players. “This is not a try out, it is simply to allow the board to form teams of relatively equal players,” said Communications Chair, Danielle Hollingsworth. “Teams play each other in the league and it is not beneficial for anyone to have one team dominate another,” she explained. Teams are also combined grade levels based on the league formation. This allows grade levels with too few and those with too many to combine and have more teams. “Keeping it all one grade level would give more potential for some girls to remain on a waiting list with not enough to form a team. Combining varied skills and grade levels allows the girls to take on leadership roles, have other to look up to and make new friends beyond their current classmates, said Hollingsworth. Teams range from 8-12 girls on a team in the following combos: 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th. Boys can be placed on teams with girls in grades 3 and 4. Fifth grade and up they will have their own combined grade level team.

In the first season LYVO provided the opportunity for 102 girls to play volleyball. A few boys signed up but it was not enough to form a team. “This year we hope to be able to get the word out more, and have close to 150 players, both boys and girls,” said Graff.

Currently LYVO practices all in the Loveland School District gyms. Matches were played last year on Sundays between 2 and 9 PM at Courts for Sports in Mason.

If you would like more information about your child playing, coaching, or becoming part of the LYVO board check their website: www.lovelandyouthvolleyball.org or email them at lyvolleyball3.8@gmail.com.

Loveland, Ohio – For the past 10 years they have called Loveland High School (LHS) home while spreading their volunteer mission throughout the Loveland community and beyond. This year has been a busy one for Tigers in Service – a volunteer club that continues to thrive.

“We have worked at Matthew 25, volunteered at various events in the Loveland community, and we have spent a lot of time at the Loveland Care Center with residents there,” said Rachel Bierkan, LHS orchestra director, and Tigers in Service sponsor. “We will also provide dinner and childcare for the Bethany House homeless shelter.

“The students learn to give back to their community. They develop a sensibility about the bigger world and are understanding that they have the ability to make a positive impact in that world.”

Tigers in Service is open to students in grades 9-12. This year, 60 students have volunteered with the club.
