  • BBB Business Tip – Use EMV Chip Cards now or face liability

BBB Business Tip – Use EMV Chip Cards now or face liability

October 1, 2015, is an important deadline for American businesses; that’s when a “liability shift” is occurring

Better Business Bureau is urging all retail businesses to get new EMV chip card readers installed by October 1st, if they haven’t done so already.

Most countries – including Canada and Mexico – have required microchips in credit and debit cards for some time (80 countries so far, with 2.37 billion chip payment cards in use). The United States is catching up; by the end of 2015, 70 percent of credit cards and 40 percent of debit cards in the U.S. will have embedded swipesecurity chips called EMV (for Europay, MasterCard and Visa). EMV cards will eventually replace magnetic stripe cards completely, and many banks and credit unions are already issuing EMV cards to current account holders.

The EMV cards allow consumers to use their cards globally, and they also help reduce card fraud and identity theft, and make in-store transactions more secure. The chip generates a unique, one-time code that is difficult to counterfeit but is needed for each transaction to be approved.

October 1, 2015, is an important deadline for American businesses; that’s when a “liability shift” is occurring that moves the responsibility for covering losses to the business where a fraudulent charge occurs. If a business does not have the new EMV reader, they are liable for the cost of any purchases made with a counterfeit card. In other words, the card issuer will no longer absorb the loss.

Businesses need to replace the old magnetic swipe machines as soon as possible. Most large retailers have already made the change, but many small and independent businesses have not. EMV readers run from under $25 for a basic device that plugs into a smart phone, up to about $300 for a countertop model with all the “bells and whistles.” They are available from major electronics retailers and online. A business’s credit card processor may be able to provide additional information or recommendations.

Many consumers have already received new credit and debit cards with the EMV chips (it’s the small metallic square). The only other noticeable change for consumers will be when they shop at retail stores with EMV technology; instead of “swiping” their card, consumers will “dip” the card into a slot in the terminal or, in some case, “tap” the card on a flat reader. It may take a few moments longer than the old swipe card, but the transaction will be more secure.

For more information, go to EMV Connection (for business information) or GoChipCard (for consumer information).

Nothing but Tender Towne Chicken so far next to Kroger

6a00d8341c5f6d53ef01a3fd3f1eea970b-650wiLoveland, Ohio – Eva Parker, the City Building and Zoning Coordinator was asked today if any other businesses are scheduled to go into the Tender Towne strip mall next to Kroger. She said, “I have not heard that the owner has anything scheduled yet for additional tenants.”

The former Patio restaurant next to Kroger at 700 Loveland-Madeira Road was demolished in March. The owner, David Realty Group, will construct a 6,350 sq ft mixed use building with a 400 sq ft patio and a drive-thru. This was also a former Gold Star Chili.

The only announced tenant is Tender Towne selling chicken tenders, chicken wraps, chicken salad sandwiches, coleslaw, garlic toast, and fries. It is anticipated most customers will use a drive-thru, however there will be 5-6 outdoor tables. There is one other Tender Towne in the greater Cincinnati area, at 603 Ohio Pike (Beechmont Ave.)

  • Ohioans report surge of tax-related phone scams

Ohioans report surge of tax-related phone scams

Listen to audio of a reported “IRS” scam

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine Friday warned that his office has received more than 600 reports of tax-related scams since Sept. 1.

The scams generally begin with a phone call telling consumers they are in trouble with the IRS and must call an out-of-state number for more information. Eventually consumers are asked for money.

In one recent variation of the scam, a consumer receives a call from a “Steve Martin,” who claims to work for the U.S. Treasury Department. He says the consumer is facing federal charges and must call a specific phone number, often one with a 757 or 540 area code (Virginia). In another variation, a recorded message warns the consumer that this is the “final notice from the IRS” before a lawsuit will be filed.

Consumers who respond to the calls are instructed to send hundreds of dollars using money transfers or prepaid cards, which are commonly found at grocery or convenience stores. While most consumers do not send any money, a few have reported losing hundreds or thousands of dollars.

“Con artists rely on people becoming so nervous that they send money right away,” Attorney General DeWine said. “If you receive one of these calls, don’t respond and don’t send any money.”

Tips for consumers to avoid tax-related phone scams include:

    • Don’t trust threatening callers. If you receive an unexpected phone call from someone who threatens to arrest you for not paying taxes, be very skeptical, especially if you never received any written notice. Also don’t trust someone who demands that you pay immediately via wire transfer or prepaid card. These are preferred payment methods for scam artists.
    • Don’t respond to illegal robocalls in any way. Don’t interact with the caller, and don’t call a number left on your phone or in a message. Responding to a scam call can result in even more calls because it lets con artists know that your phone number belongs to a real person.
    • Look into call-blocking options. Check with your phone carrier and third-party services to determine whether call-blocking services could help you stop unwanted calls. (Attorney General DeWine has joined dozens of other attorneys general in encouraging phone carriers to use call-blocking technology to help consumers stop illegal telemarketing calls.)

U.S. Treasury or IRS impersonation scams can be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at www.tigta.gov or 800-366-4484. Consumers also can contact the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800-282-0515 for assistance.
