Loveland Magazine’s March Pet of the Month is Announced!

    by Cassie Mattia

Self-described “Dog Mom” Cassie Mattia lives in Historic Downtown Loveland with Nala, Dean, and her boyfriend Adam. Cassie is the Co-Owner and Associate Editor of Loveland Magazine.

Loveland, Ohio – We are pleased to present Loveland Magazine’s Pet of the Month for March! The community of Loveland provided us with some excellent St. Patty’s Day Pet of the Month photos and we are beyond thrilled to celebrate these local pets with YOU the readers!

Introducing Murphy Flanagan, an 11-year-old Goldendoodle, who was born on St. Patty’s Day! Murphy was adopted by Laurie Flanagan and her family who have a strong Irish background.

Laurie Flanagan says Murphy has spent his entire life as a Loveland resident and his 2 human brothers and sister all went to Loveland schools.

“He is a friendly fluff who enjoys exploring in the woods, going on car rides, stealing toys from his neighbor dog friend Bailey, stealing treats from his other neighbor dog friend Oscar, chewing on sticks, and swimming in the ocean,” Flanagan said, “He is affectionately called ‘peanut butter boy’ by his Loveland groomer, Pon of Top Dog Grooming given his lip-smacking joy eating the creamy stuff.”

Murphy loves walking the trail between Symmes Park and Home of the Brave just so he can catch a glimpse of kids playing sports or practicing their instruments for band, according to Flanagan.

“Murphy also likes going to the Loveland Farmers Market to sniff around for the dog treat booth and enjoys hanging on the patio at Ramsey’s Trailside on a nice summer day,” Flanagan added, “We received sad news back in October that Murphy was diagnosed with sarcoma and given 6-12 months to live. Even with a large mass on his right hip that continues to grow in size and is now impacting his walking, he still is a happy camper sharing his good nature and love with anyone he encounters; humans and dogs alike!”

[w/Loveland Rally Video] Guest Column by Bob Rutter: “Please pray for the free people in Ukraine.”

Bob Rutter is a resident of Miami Township just on the outskirts of Loveland.

    by Bob Rutter

Over 150 men, women and children rallied on Friday February 25 at Home of the Brave Park in Symmes Township in support of a free Ukraine to protest the on-going armed seizure of that democratic nation by Russia’s Vladimir Putin’s armed forces.

The majority were American citizens from Ukraine, Russia and surrounding Eastern European countries. They hoped to draw peaceful attention to the plight of a free people facing the horrors of modern warfare.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s motives are attributed to varied goals ranging from a grab for control of petroleum pipelines transiting Ukraine, gaining Russian access to the Black Sea, preventing Ukraine’s entry into NATO and most importantly, stitching together part of the old USSR to create his new vision of Russia.

It was sad to hear reported in the news that we are  helping foot the bill permitting Putin’s adventurism to the tune of around $10 Billion a year by buying Russian oil, since we are no longer energy independent.

When the United States is weak as a leader in the world, bad actors fill the void with the aspirations of world dominance. Watching eagerly is China’s Xi Jinping and his hunger for control of Taiwan, the Irian Mullahs’ quest for nuclear weapons and dominance in the Middle East and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un’s continuing tyrannical dominance over his country’s enslaved population.

The Tri-State connection;  when you kiss your kids goodnight and snuggle into bed, please pray for the free people in Ukraine who are men, women and children like you, except their hopes are only to live another day and experience the same freedoms you enjoy.

  • President Biden Nominates Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to Serve as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court

President Biden Nominates Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to Serve as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court

    Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson

Washington, DC – Today, President Biden announced his intent to nominate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Currently a judge on U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

Since Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement, President Biden has conducted a process to identify his replacement.  President Biden sought a candidate with, “exceptional credentials, unimpeachable character, and unwavering dedication to the rule of law.”  In a release from the Whitehouse, the President also sought a nominee, “much like Justice Breyer—who is wise, pragmatic, and has a deep understanding of the Constitution as an enduring charter of liberty.  And the President sought an individual who is committed to equal justice under the law and who understands the profound impact that the Supreme Court’s decisions have on the lives of the American people.”

A former clerk for Justice Breyer, Judge Jackson has broad experience across the legal profession – as a federal appellate judge, a federal district court judge, a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, an attorney in private practice, and as a federal public defender. Judge Jackson has been confirmed by the Senate with votes from Republicans as well as Democrats three times.

After law school, Judge Jackson served in Justice Breyer’s chambers as a law clerk.  She served as a federal public defender from 2005 to 2007, representing defendants on appeal who did not have the means to pay for a lawyer.  If confirmed, she would be the first former federal public defender to serve on the Supreme Court.

Prior to serving as a judge, Judge Jackson followed in the footsteps of her mentor Justice Breyer by working on the U.S. Sentencing Commission—an important body, bipartisan by design, that President Biden fought to create as a member of the U.S. Senate.  Her work there focused on reducing unwarranted sentencing disparities and ensuring that federal sentences were just and proportionate, according to the press release.

Judge Jackson lives with her husband, Patrick, who serves as Chief of the Division of General Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital, and two daughters, in Washington, D.C.

Ketanji Brown Jackson was born September 14, 1970.

  • Regional stakeholders weigh in on Loveland’s proposed parking garage

Regional stakeholders weigh in on Loveland’s proposed parking garage

All Stakeholders Must Weigh In on Proposed Parking Garage

The Little Miami State Park, located within the beautiful and historic Little Miami River valley, has been designated as a federal and state scenic river. It is protected because of its water quality, panoramic setting, and the many historic sites that can be found along its banks. The historic City of Loveland has become the gateway to the linear park trail that meanders 50 miles along the river valley, a popular destination for cyclists, paddlers, and hikers.

It is not surprising that Loveland’s business community welcomes the opportunity to accommodate out-of-town visitors to the scenic park by building a parking garage 100 feet from the Little Miami River trail head. Since downtown parking is scarce, such a facility would be convenient for customers frequenting the growing number of restaurants, shops, and businesses that make this charming old town an even greater tourist attraction.

And yet, what is an asset for some is a liability for others. The residents of Loveland have been given no chance to weigh in on the proposed two-story 270-space garage parking garage in the heart of their town and adjacent to the confluence of two natural waterways, the Little Miami River and the O’Bannon Creek. There is a growing concern among many Loveland residents that such a structure would destroy the very scenic park that attracts tourists in the first place.

By law, and in accordance with the provisions of chapter 1547 of the Ohio Revised Code the Ohio, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is charged with appointing an Advisory Council representing local interests to assess the ecological viability of building such a structure within reach of the Little Miami State Park. Nevertheless, the City Council of Loveland has proceeded – with zero community input – to apply for millions of dollars in government grants to build the garage behind Loveland’s City Hall.

The Little Miami River, in fact, traverses an ecologically vulnerable flood plain. Trail volunteers report their never-ending battle of keeping the trail free of conditions that cause flooding on parts of the trail-clogged culverts, erosion caused by bridge embankments, adjacent developments, and other obstacles that interrupt the flow of water away from the trail surface. Even a few inches of rainfall can cause permanent flood damage. With the ground’s inability to absorb or impede the flow of water, the consequences can be disastrous. And yet, no data-driven environmental impact studies have been done to date.

Mature trees – vital for maintaining the permeability of the forest soils and preventing erosion and flooding – will need to be cut down to make room for this imposing concrete structure. Have wet weather studies been done to assess the impacts of increased stormwater runoff from the bulldozed ground, demolished building and asphalt surfaces, or the discharge from the requisite catch basins and storm sewer pipes needed to manage stormwater overflows? What would be the measure of air pollution due to increased particulate matter as well as increased noise pollution? Have any of these environmental concerns have been addressed?

Communities that dwell within natural watersheds have the legal right to participate in constructive dialogue and debate on matters that put the health, biodiversity, and safety of the ecosystem in which they live at risk. Loveland City Council must hold a public hearing before it takes a vote on the proposed downtown parking garage. Addressing the parking situation in this unique town should rightfully include all stakeholders in the discussion.
