    Loveland High School Receives an A on State Report Card

    Overall, Loveland City School District received a B

    Loveland, Ohio – On September 13, the Ohio Department of Education released its annual report cards for public school districts across the state and Loveland High School was listed as one of six high schools in the Greater Cincinnati area to receive an A, the highest grade a school can obtain.

    “I am so proud of the work we’re doing in all of our classrooms for all of our students, although I believe we will always have room for growth and improvement,” said Dr. Amy Crouse, superintendent. “Even though we know the state report card is just one tool of accountability based on one standardized test, it is validation that we are on the right track in preparing students for tomorrow, today.”

    The report card grades, A through F, are based on other sub-grades in areas such as Achievement, Progress, Graduation Rate and Gap Closing. For the first time, the state also released an overall district-level grade summing up how districts performed in this year’s report cards. Loveland City School District received a B. In Hamilton County, four school districts received an A, five received a B, and the 13 remaining districts received a grade of C or lower.

    “We know the state report card can provide us with useful information, although we have to keep in mind that its data offers just one snapshot of the very complex work we do every day in our classrooms,” said Crouse. “As a school district committed to high achievement and continuous growth, we monitor, analyze and factor in multiple data points when we consider the educational experience we strive to provide in our schools.”

    Later this month, the Loveland City School District will also release their own “Quality Profile”, which offers a look at the performance of district students and staff, using multiple measures and data points. The Quality Profile is supported by the Alliance for High Quality Education, an education consortium that works to improve educational opportunities for students and represent member districts on matters of educational policy and funding.

    “Our Quality Profile includes measures beyond the test scores that make up the state report card and seeks to show the complete picture of the total value our schools provide to our students, staff and community,” said Crouse. “While we will continue to celebrate our successes, we will never ignore the areas that present opportunities for progress. Ultimately, our goal is that every Tiger student is empowered to learn, grow and embody our core values of care, respect and responsibility.”

    Part of being ready for school means making sure buildings and staff are prepared for what the new year holds. Over the summer, the Loveland City School District, like many other districts in our area, took several measures to improve safety and security for students and staff.

    In Loveland, these safety updates include improved rapid room number identification on all exterior windows to assist first responders. We have also equipped all classrooms with an additional locking device. We have implemented the Raptor visitor management system, an on-the-spot legal identification sign-in software for all visitors – including parents – to our buildings. Using a legal form of identification, the Raptor system checks the visitor’s name and date of birth against a national database of registered sex offenders, and ensures that such individuals do not enter the school campuses without our knowledge.

    A well-informed staff and student body is our first step toward the goal of a safe and secure campus. As part of our safety education, the district implements a schedule for practice of the ALICE model (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) for active shooter civilian response. The students at Loveland High School (LHS) have already attended an ALICE safety presentation this school year, focusing on the response in the event of a crisis situation. Several opportunities for follow-up presentations and training are scheduled for this year and will be accompanied by class discussions.

    Officer Jesse Moore is now a full-time, on-site school resource officer (SRO) at Loveland High School.

    In partnership with the Loveland Police, we are also very excited to have been afforded the opportunity to add Officer Jesse Moore as an on-site, full-time school resource officer (SRO) at LHS. In addition to being available for the overall safety for students, staff and visitors on the LHS campus, Officer Moore will provide educational programs for students in areas such as social media awareness, Fourth Amendment rights, and general laws and driving regulations. With a unique ability to build positive relationships, he will also play an important role as a mentor for our high school students. Mr.Barnes, a retired policer officer, will continue to serve Loveland Middle School and Loveland Intermediate School as SRO. Mr. Almond also returns to support the safety of students at LHS. We are grateful to have the support of the Loveland Police and know this positively impacts the experience our students have in our schools and community.


    Mental health and safety are also high priorities at Loveland. The district has entered a partnership with the Cincinnati nonprofit Grant Us Hope to implement Hope Squada school-based, peer-to-peer suicide prevention program empowering students and staff with knowledge to identify at-risk behaviors for suicide, as well as encouraging peers to seek help from a trusted adult. Advisor training, general staff training and student ambassador identification/training in Loveland will be completed this fall, with an anticipated launch of Hope Squad in January of 2019.

    I am immensely grateful for the implementation of these safety measures and for the ongoing assessments and long-term planning by the Loveland District Safety Committee. Our work is continuous to ensure that we always strive for the most trusted and integrated school safety technologies to keep our Tigers safe. Comprehensive facility upgrades will be needed before we can approach some aspects of safety and security in our buildings, and they will be addressed in the Loveland City School District facilities master planning process as it unfolds over the coming months. As always, my number one priority as superintendent of Loveland City Schools is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to prepare each student for tomorrow, today.

    Loveland celebrated Tigers State Champion Soccer Team with ring ceremony

    Loveland, Ohio – Loveland High School (LHS) and the Loveland Athletic Boosters joined Tiger Nation in celebrating the success of the Tigers State Champion Soccer Team with a State Championship Ring Ceremony Friday, May 4, in the LHS Gym. The Loveland Athletic Boosters purchased the championship rings for the entire team and coaches.

    Loveland High School students selected for American Legion Buckeye Boys State

    Six Loveland students selected for government leadership conference

    Loveland, Ohio – Six Loveland High School (LHS) students were selected to attend the American Legion Buckeye Girls and Boys State conferences this year.

    Participants are exposed to the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of a franchised citizen; the training is objective, practical and non-partisan, with city, county and state government operated by students elected to the various presentations, assemblies, a band, and recreation.

    “This is an incredible course in government operations offered by the American Legion, and we are thrilled for the students who earned the opportunity to attend,” said LHS Principal Peggy Johnson.

    Loveland School District names Brian Conatser athletic director

    Former interim to lead in permanent capacity

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District announced today that Brian Conatser – a longtime Tiger – as the permanent district director of student athletics. Conatser, who has 12 years of experience growing Loveland student-athletes in his work as a varsity coach, served as the athletic director in an interim capacity during the 2017-18 school year following the February announcement that District Director of Student Athletics Julie Renner accepted a position outside education with FinalForms, a national athletic management solution company.

    “Loveland High School is known in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference for our robust athletic program, and Mr. Conatser proved to Tiger Nation that he has what it takes to lead this program forward,” said Loveland High School Principal Peggy Johnson.

    Conatser began serving the district in 2006 as a teacher at Loveland High School (LHS). During that time Conatser was a member of the varsity football coaching team, and worked as the LHS strength and conditioning coach. He transitioned from his teaching role to work as the LHS Innovative Instructional Coach during the 2015-16 school year, before joining the administrative team in the role of assistant director of student athletics in 2016. Conatser has a Bachelor’s of Education in Health Promotion from the University of Cincinnati, a Master’s of Education in Secondary Education from Xavier University, and a Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership from American College of Education.

    “I love this district, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to grow our already outstanding athletic program for our students, our parents, our community, and our staff,” said Conatser. “It is a great time to be a Tiger!”

    Loveland Magazine Intern Sam Smith accepted into New York University Tisch School of the Arts

    Loveland, Ohio – Sam Smith has been a paid intern at Loveland Magazine since the fall of 2016. He has been doing news writing, opinion writing, videography, editing, and producing stories. Recently, he was among ten Loveland High School (LHS) seniors who were honored at the Fine Arts Signing Day on May 3.

    Smith will go to the New York University Tisch School of the Arts this fall to further his passion for filmmaking.

    In this first video, you can watch teacher James Barrett talk about Smith’s accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom while attending LHS. In the second, Smith talks about why he chose, and why he is excited to attend the Tisch School.

    Ten seniors commit to continuing art studies in third-annual ceremony

    Loveland, Ohio – It was a celebration of the arts for 10 Loveland High School (LHS) seniors, their families, their friends and their teachers at the third-annual LHS Fine Arts Signing Day Thursday, May 3. Each student gathered in the LHS Gymnasium to make their commitment to their passion official, and LOVELAND MAGAZINE TV was there to bring it to our readers.

    “It has been a joy to watch each of these students grow as artists during their time at Loveland High School,” said LHS Principal Peggy Johnson. “We are so excited for them to continue to pursue their passion for the arts at the next level.”

    Loveland High School Biotech class unique opportunity for Tiger Innovation

    Senior capstone captures college-level results

    Loveland, Ohio – It’s called Biotech, and at Loveland High School (LHS) it is a two-year course commitment that all students have the option to apply for. The pinnacle for coursework in this class is the biotechnology capstone – a student-selected research project that Biotech students complete their senior year.

    “Every year I’m captivated by the advances to high school science our students have the ability to make – they just never cease to amaze me,” said LHS Biotech Teacher Jamie Allison.

    This year, three students used high school research to achieve college-level results. LHS seniors Sophia Sperry, Zach Garner and Brandon Bishop conducted an experiment which successfully proved the ability for solid lipid nanoparticles to be used as vehicles for medicine, reducing side effects that are typical as pharmaceutical drugs travel through the body.

    “It was just kind of a surreal moment for me,” said LHS Senior Brandon Bishop. “None of us really thought it worked at first – we were skeptical, but Mr. Allison confirmed what we were seeing.”

    The successful experiment – conducted in March 2018, which confirmed studies they had seen produced by college-level students, was the final chapter in a research project the trio had been working on since September 2017. The students selected the capstone project based on a motivation to conduct research that could help others.

    “We just wanted to find something that could really change the world and help give people better chances of surviving disease,” said LHS Senior Zach Garner.

    “This is our Tiger Innovation goal at its finest,” said Loveland Director of Technology and Innovation David Knapp. “What our LHS Biotech class allowed Sophia, Zach and Brandon to experience in the lab is part of our strategic plan for innovative learning for all of our students – to allow them to work collaboratively with peers, teachers and professionals in the field to tackle real-world problems. We are very proud of what they achieved.”

    “Many students sadly don’t have the chance to get involved in this type of research,” said LHS Senior Sophia Sperry. “This class really opens up the opportunity for students to get a taste of what happens in the real research world.”

    Take 40 Loveland High School (LHS) students with a passion for education and a teacher with a vision to not only provide rich course offerings for students but also help develop future educators, and you have Loveland’s new Teaching Professions Academy (TPA). That’s right – in Loveland, we are teaching Tiger students how to become Tiger teachers for their future careers.

    This program, designed and instructed by Bre Sambuchino, gives our high school students the unique opportunity to make real-world connections between the curriculum and instructional strategies they study in this new class when they apply them to field-placement experiences within our district. From Loveland Elementary School to Loveland Intermediate School, TPA students get hands-on experience learning the different skills teachers must possess to be successful at the various levels of student development. TPA students work together to prepare real, vibrant lessons for our young Tigers – taking care and pride in representing their program with professionalism.

    A table-top sized tree quickly grew with various versions of what might be the best technique to use to create a tree that both captured the passion of the group while still making certain it was versatile enough to be transported.

    The pinnacle of the program’s successful first year was evident on March 15 when the TPA students and Ms. Sambuchino traveled to the EdRising Ohio conference at Ohio Dominican. TPA students participated in various speaking and lesson-planning competitions and worked as a group to create their chapter display with the theme “Where do we grow from here?” A table-top sized tree quickly grew with various versions of what might be the best technique to use to create a tree that both captured the passion of the group while still making certain it was versatile enough to be transported. “Their ideas continued to grow with the tree!” commented Sambuchino.

    The conference and the tree certainly delivered in true LHS TPA fashion! The tree won first place (chapter display), and LHS Senior Maddy Butts won second place in the STEM lesson planning and delivery competition teaching a robust “states of matter” lesson to her field placement class. She is now a National Qualifier, and she will be competing in Orlando, Fla., in June. In addition to these accolades, Loveland High School’s program was awarded as an Honors Chapter, one of 12 out of 64 total state chapters. The students, along with their award-winning tree, even made State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria’s Twitter feed!

    Success like this isn’t based on luck. It is the result of focused, strategic effort; the LHS TPA is the first of a series of Academic Pathways the Loveland City School District is developing to prepare our students for tomorrow, today. It is our mission, in action – and – it is award-winning.

    Loveland, Ohio – Tuesday, March 20, Loveland High School (LHS) freshmen heard a message of love from LHS Class of 1998 Graduate Nick Jackson. The #IAmSPEAKLOVE message has been presented to almost one million students internationally, and helps students focus on respect and positive student-teacher communication, mental health issues and awareness, and suicide, self-harm and bullying prevention.

    “This was a unique opportunity for our high school freshmen to hear from one of our own,” said LHS Counselor Jamie Gordon. “Mr. Jackson presents a powerful message with breakout sessions we knew would be a perfect fit for our district My Voice, My Choice campaign. We are so excited he was able to return back home to join us!”

    The belief that ‘Love Wins’ was birthed within the walls of Loveland High School.

    “Coming back to Loveland and speaking in the main auditorium was an absolute honor,” said Jackson. “My parents and the parents of my friends worked extremely hard for our families to afford the opportunities that Loveland has to offer. The belief that ‘Love Wins’ was birthed within the walls of Loveland High School, and during the presentation as a community we cried together, we laughed together and we – in unison – took one more step towards mental health and wholeness.” 

    The Loveland My Voice, My Choice campaign is designed to create a culture of kindness for students at all grade levels. Each year, each building in the district works to spread the My Voice, My Choice message in a variety of ways, including student recognition.
