Did you know there is a Community Garden at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church?

Loveland, Ohio – This is the second year for the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s Community Garden at 101 S. Lebanon Road.

    Listen to this story…

There are 35 families sharing 32 spaces, growing vegetables and flowers. Each family pledges a donation of at least ten percent to the LIFE Food Pantry, but some give everything they grow.

Because they grow in straw bales, there is little to no weeding, and gardeners who have mobility issues have easier access to their vegetables in the raised beds. “Almost half of our gardeners are not members of Prince of Peace,” said church member, Sheryl Melvin. “There is no cost to gardeners except for the seeds or plants they purchase, but their donations allow us to supplement the produce we donate to the pantry with recipe kit bags.”

Volunteers from both the Church and the food pantry harvest together each Monday and Thursday morning.

Melvin added, “We offer workshops on how to grow gardens in straw bales each February and March, and have mentored other churches that wanted to start community gardens.”

Second Sundays in the Community Garden is light potluck supper and informal worship service on every second Sunday evening, June through October at 6 PM, then ending with prayers. Everyone is invited.

    Recipe Kit Bags?

    Sheryl Melvin explains:

Our thought was that sometimes we run across a vegetable we’ve not eaten before, and it would be helpful to have a good recipe describing how to prepare it. So, we created recipe kits bags. Each one has a recipe for zucchini or tomatoes or cucumbers or something else, and we staple the recipe to the bag and fill the bag with the shelf stable ingredients needed to make that recipe (like cooking oil, white wine vinegar, seasonings, baking mixes, pasta or Parmesan cheese) if they choose that vegetable from the pantry.

We delivered a set of 20 for zucchini pie Thursday, and I learned they are gone already. I will be taking kits for black and white bean and tomato salad this week.

We have another set of 20 for vegetable pasta salad after that.

The church funded the recipe kits project.

[VIDEO] 22nd Annual Pass it On Food Drive

UPDATE: Loveland Schools reports that students and staff donated more than 6,000 food items.

Loveland, Ohio – I met Nancy Grant at the corner of Lebanon Road and Durango Drive right across from the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church this morning where she was directing traffic for the 22nd Annual Pass it On Food Drive. Hundreds of Loveland Intermediate School and Loveland Middle School students were carrying food to the church that they donated to the LIFE Food Pantry. The food will be packaged into Thanksgiving baskets for local residents and clients of the pantry.

The children walked about 3/4 mile to hand deliver the food.

The food drive was started by Nancy Grant to heal wounds after the terrorist attack on 9/11. The purpose is so that clients of the LIFE Food Pantry and other residents in the community can eat well at Thanksgiving and later in December.

Grant said twenty-two years ago, “Well, we can’t change the world, but we can change our little corner of it.” She had this idea to line up the kids down the street and pass the food donations one bag and box, hand-to-hand at a time to one another until it reached the church. A pay it forward so children could feel good about themselves. She thought it worked after 9/11 and has ever since. The students didn’t exactly “pass-it-on” to one another like they used to, but each carried their own donations to the church.

After the donations arrive, adult volunteers will sort, date-check, organize, and assemble a Thanksgiving meal box to go out to area families. The huge effort is to ensure that all our Loveland families and singles will have the items they need so they can sit down together and enjoy a traditional meal for the holiday.

Loveland, Ohio – Downtown Loveland is bringing another event your way hosted by local church Prince of Peace!

On Thursday, July 29th beginning at 6 PM Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (POP) will be hosting “Night at Nisbet,” an event dedicated to supporting those in the community as they pursue their dreams and reach for their goals. The fun-filled night will take place at Nisbet Park, a park located right off the Loveland Bike Trail at 126 Karl Brown Way. The park also includes an amphitheater in which local bands Watchfrogs and Pocket will be performing. There will also be “Open Mic” slots available for students to show off their talents to the community.

Pastor Lily Brondyke who is a POP intern that is currently preparing for her final year of Seminary at Wartburg, will be spearheading the “Night at Nisbet” along with help from the ELCA Open Doors Grant. Pastor Lily will be graduating in 2022 with a Master of Divinity Degree.

Pastor Lily is hoping to make “Night at Nisbet” one of the best POP events yet as she will be completing her internship with POP on August 8th just in time for her final year of Seminary. Pastor Lily will be preaching at both POP services on August 8th. A coffee and cake celebration will be held after each of Pastor Lily’s services so that the community will have the opportunity to wish her well before she leaves. POP will also be presenting Lily with a gift on her last day. If you would like to contribute to the gift you can make a check out to Prince of Peace with “Intern Gift” noted on the memo line or you can donate online.

If you are interested in celebrating Pastor Lily, the beautiful community we live in, and many local talented musical artists take a trip down to Nisbet Park for a “Night at Nisbet!”

Read on below to see all the “Night at Nisbet” details provided by Pastor Lily and POP!

Make a Date To Be Creative

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as we see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 24-25

This past year forced many of us to think about relationships and connections. How do we connect with our communities? How do we form relationships? The COVID-19 pandemic forced businesses, schools, churches, families, and friends to get creative about connection.  Eventually, vaccines made it possible for the pandemic to look a little different. Masks and social distancing became optional when vaccinated. Gatherings became safer.  But there’s no turning back to an old kind of normal.

At Prince of Peace, creativity became a driving force for our mission of living and loving like Jesus in the world.

We are called to think creatively about how we live and love like Jesus. We are called to consider how we build community and lift up one another. We are called to love and support each other as we pursue our dreams.

Night at Nisbet is about all of this — getting out and loving the communities in which we live. Lifting each other up and celebrating what God is doing in each of our lives.   Come together for a night of music, community, and celebration.

Nisbet Park is iconic to downtown Loveland. Situated on the bike path, within walking distance to great local food, drink, and sno-cones, a night at this park guarantees a good time. Some folks walk or run or bike on by, on their way to another spot. Some use the picnic tables for time with family and friends. There’s a playground, a pavilion, bathrooms—basically everything you could need. It’s a great place to gather people.

If you like good music, supporting local musicians, and having a good time with good people, it’s coming here to Loveland. If you are looking for something fun to do with family or friends or are excited about a different, creative ministry in an ever-changing world, pay attention to this event.   Night at Nisbet is dedicated to community and local music.

Mark July 29th at 6:00  PM on your calendar because you won’t want to miss this night! Local bands, ‘Watchfrog’ and ‘Pocket’ will be performing. And you’ll probably see some familiar faces on the stage. Open mic slots feature student talent right from our own area!

Night at Nisbet is sponsored by Prince of Peace through an ELCA Open Doors grant. To learn more about ELCA Open Doors, visit here.
    See you there!

  • Loveland Community Celebrates LIFE Food Pantry’s new Location!

Loveland Community Celebrates LIFE Food Pantry’s new Location!

Cassie Mattia lives in Historic Downtown and is the Associate Editor of Loveland Magazine

    by Cassie Mattia

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland’s very own food pantry is now open for business!

On Thursday, September 10th, LIFE (Loveland InterFaith Effort) Food Pantry showed off their beautiful new space located at 541 Loveland Maderia Road in the Shopper’s Haven Plaza to the Loveland community with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Although invites to the ceremony were limited due to the COVID-19 stipulations many community members, as well as the Mayor of Loveland, Kathy Bailey, and the Little Miami River Chamber of Commerce President, CeeCee Collins, rallied around to get a look at the food pantry’s new location.

Luckily Loveland Magazine TV got a personalized tour by one of LIFE Food Pantry’s top volunteers after the ribbon was cut and the doors were opened!

The tour showed the 2,000 square foot space filled with donations from Walmart, Kroger, Fresh Thyme, the 13 congregations that support the pantry, and several different food drives.

Unlike the food pantry’s previous location at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church clients will now be able to feel as though they are shopping at their local “Corner Store” because of the added space and organization.

Aisles within the pantry include proteins, pasta, prepared meals, veggies, fruits, baking supplies, soups, and much more! Each aisle is separated by the size of the family in need making it that much easier for clients to look at their choices and shop for themselves. This is what LIFE Food Pantry calls a “Choice Pantry.”

The pantry’s new space also includes what they refer to as a “Tiger Closet,” which is specifically for Loveland students who are in need of food and other supplies. To see the full Loveland Magazine TV video of the LIFE Food Pantry’s opening day and ribbon-cutting ceremony click below!

Coincidentally enough LIFE Food Pantry’s opening day happened to be on the same day as World Hunger Day making the day that much more important to everyone involved.

Since the inception of the COVID-19 pandemic LIFE Food Pantry’s clients have increased by 1/3. Currently, LIFE serves 250 families (nearly 500 people a month) and they plan on seeing that number increase now that they have opened a larger location. Anyone who lives in the 45140 zip code can be helped by the food pantry.

LIFE moved locations from Prince of Peace to Shopper’s Haven in Loveland because of the growing demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the press release sent out by LIFE it stated:

“LIFE is increasing capacity in a new space that will allow us to serve even more residents in need. This move is critical for the ever-growing demand during COVID-19. The new location will provide:

    • the capability to extend hours of operation
    • space for our volunteers to stay safe by following social distancing regulations
