Hamilton County residents have a new resource to help them manage unwanted or leftover chemicals in their homes. TakeBackYourHome.org is a website that provides solutions and options for household hazardous waste use and disposal.
Website visitors will find a list of outlets that accept and properly dispose or recycle unwanted chemical products. The website features alternative recipes for common house cleaners, as well as easy-to-follow video recipes for chemical-free products to use in homes, gardens, and yards.
“Ultimately, we want to educate people about the options they have when choosing products for their home and yard and when storing and disposing of hazardous materials. We want to help people make safe and healthy choices for their families and to help protect the environment,” states Assistant Solid Waste Manager Michelle Balz.
Based upon the acronym “TAKE,” residents will learn a hierarchy of ways to handle hazardous materials, such as pesticides, oil-based paints and stains, and cleaning products.
Teach yourself to find the correct quantity needed for your project (i.e. measure your lawn’s square footage and purchase only what is needed for fertilizer).
Alternatives available? For example, one can clean a drain with vinegar and baking soda rather than buying expensive drain cleaners.
Know how to store the products properly. A common mistake is doubling the product’s recommended quantity thinking it will work twice as well.
Explore disposal options. Rather than throwing away the used motor oil from a lawn mower, take it to one of the many oil change businesses that accept that oil and recycle it properly.
Household hazardous waste can have a negative impact on local soil and water. In addition, it presents a potential danger for waste haulers. Common household hazardous waste includes pesticides, herbicides, motor oil and other automotive fluids, as well as propane tanks, drain cleaners, and oil-based paint.
“Take Back Your Home” is a collaborative program of Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District, Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Hamilton County Public Health. For more information, please visit TAKEBackYourHome.org.
