Outstanding achievement in the Navy JROTC

Loveland High School senior Shelly Turner is a superstar at the Scarlet Oaks Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC). Turner has earned significant local and national awards, including:

  • Honor Cadet: Turner was No. 1 out of 160 cadets from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and West Virginia at the NJROTC Basic Leadership Training Camp.
  • National Rifle Training Camp: Turner took third place at the National Air Rifle Training Camp competing against shooters from all across the country.
  • Scarlet Oaks Rifle Team: Turner is the No. 1 shooter for Scarlet Oaks – the top ranked JROTC rifle team in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky.
  • Turner was awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart Medal for sustained superior performance as a cadet in the NJROTC Program.

“NJROTC has honestly changed my life,” said Turner. “It has motivated me to do things I never thought I could. Rifle Team boosted my confidence and made me realize I can do anything I set my mind to.”

“Shelly Turner is an amazing cadet!” said Commander Michael Brown, USN (ret), senior Naval science instructor, Scarlet Oaks NJROTC. “It has been fun to watch her mature over the course of a single year. She is always cheerful, enthusiastic and confident, and has won more medals, awards and recognitions than any other cadet. More importantly, Shelly Turner cares for other cadets. Their success is what makes her smile the most. I am extremely proud to have Shelly Turner serve as an ambassador of the U.S. Navy’s NJROTC Program and Scarlet Oaks Career Campus.”

Scarlet Oaks is a career campus in the Great Oaks network – a career-technical education school district affiliated with 36 Cincinnati area schools, including Loveland. Great Oaks is one of the largest districts of its kind in the nation. It encompasses all or part of 12 southern Ohio counties.
