Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland Citizens Police Academy is a free, fun, hands-on learning experience. You will get to know your neighbors and your local officers.
Last year our first meeting was a meet and greet, dinner and tour of the Loveland Safety Center and we received an official shirt and many useful items in a swag bag. Our last meeting was a formal dinner where we each received diplomas and special gifts.
Some of the classes we participated in were a gun safety class and live range shooting at the Scarlett Oaks Public Safety Building. One week we participated in an active shooter situation that took place at a local church. We were hand cuffed and handcuffed our fellow classmates, and investigated a mock crime scene. We were given a course at a mock crash scene and used “extraction” tools and learned about an air-care rescue. The criminal justice system was explored as well as visiting the Clermont County Jail and criminal court. We saw a demonstration by a K-9 officer and his dog.
Since 1998, LPD has hosted the academy, “to increase positive community interaction, facilitate communication, and provide education to residents about law enforcement.”
The Academy will meet from September 4 until November 13 on Wednesday evenings.
Selections will be made in August. All applicants will receive confirmation on their acceptance or being placed on a wait list.
About the Academy
The academy is comprised of 10 sessions. Participants will meet on Wednesday evenings for approximately three hours. Each session will teach about a police topic such as
Use of Force & Media Portrayal
Investigations & Crime Scenes
Taser & Handcuffing with Defensive Tactics
Use of the Scenario “MILO” Training System
Narcotics Investigations
Gun Safety
Participants will also take a tour of the Clermont County Jail, interact with the fire department/air care, participate in a K9 officer demo and much more.
Eligibility & Cost
The program is free and open to Loveland residents at least 18 years old. If your application is selected, a background check and waiver of liability will be required.
The Loveland Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association is a group of community members who have graduated from the course. The LCPAAA hosts meetings every other month and plans for volunteers to help the Loveland Police Department at community events throughout the year.
At the recent Loveland Food Truck Rally on 5/11/24, the LPD and the LCPAAA collected 409 items to help stock the LIFE Food Pantry and collected $854 in monetary donations!

Columbus, Ohio – Governor Mike DeWine today announced the 2024 expanded Sales Tax Holiday will take place from 12:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 30 until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, August 8.
In conjunction with the Ohio General Assembly, Governor DeWine expanded the length of Ohio’s Sales Tax holiday to 10 days and will allow tax-free purchases made in-person or online on all eligible items of up to $500.
“Ohio’s sales tax holiday, historically, has been meant to help families buy clothing and school supplies for the upcoming school year,” said Governor DeWine. “This expanded sales tax break will help Ohio’s families with back-to-school necessities as well as other substantial purchases during a time when so many household budgets are being strained.”
Previous sales tax holidays ran three days, included only school-related items, and offered much lower purchase price limits ($75 maximum on an item of clothing; $20 per item of instructional material and/or school supplies).
Ohio’s sales tax holiday allows tax-free purchases made in-person or online. It does not include an exemption from sales tax for services or any purchase of watercraft, outboard motors, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverage, tobacco, vapor products, or any item that contains marijuana.

Today, during a Senate Committee on Finance Hearing titled “Front Lines of the Fentanyl Crisis: Supporting Communities and Combating Addiction through Prevention and Treatment,” U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown highlighted his work to crack down on fentanyl traffickers through his Fentanyl Eradication and Narcotics Deterrence (FEND) Off Fentanyl Act, which was signed into law last month.
The FEND Off Fentanyl Act takes action to expand sanctions to illicit fentanyl traffickers in Mexico and the creators of precursor chemicals in China. Senator Brown worked with law enforcement to craft the legislation, and national and Ohio law enforcement have praised the bills passage.
Brown also discussed the importance of access to addiction treatment services with witnesses Tony Vezina, Executive Director of 4D Recovery Center; Dr. Jeanmarie Perrone, Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Founding Director of the Center for Addiction Medicine and Policy at the University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Caleb J. Banta-Green, Director of the University of Washington Center for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology and Research; and Dr. Abigail J. Herron, Vice President and Chief Behavioral Health Officer at the Institute for Family Health.
“After fighting for a year Congress passed my bipartisan FEND Off Fentanyl Act, which focuses on targeting and sanctioning the precursor chemical makers in China and the cartels in Mexico that put this stuff together. Cracking down obviously on the supply and at that level going after where the big money is, is really important,” said Brown. “It is an all-of-the-above approach.”
Brown asked the witnesses about the accessibility of treatment services, including the importance of Medicaid.
“It’s incredibly important. Just for myself, before the expansion of Medicaid there was a lottery system, and I was trying to get into treatment but didn’t get selected for the lottery. And so I had to wait, and they had to prioritize other populations aside from me. But after Medicaid expansion, I was able to get into treatment immediately,” responded Vezina.

Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District is partnering with the Loveland Police Department to conduct a safety drill tomorrow, Wednesday, May 29 at the Loveland Early Childhood Center.
During the drill, there will be a large number of police and fire vehicles at the school, and the building will be closed to visitors.

Loveland, Ohio – The City of Loveland’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony will be Monday, May 27. The event will start with a parade at 9 AM that starts from the Loveland Elementary School at 600 Loveland-Madeira Road and go to the Loveland Veterans’ Memorial at the intersection of West Loveland Avenue and Riverside Drive. Roads will be closed approx. 8:45 until 10:15 AM.

Immediately following the parade, a ceremony will be held at the Loveland Veterans’ Memorial.
The ceremony will feature a speech by Colonel J Scott Calder, a Loveland High School grad with a long career in the US Air Force Medical Services.

Loveland, Ohio – After a long career in the corporate world, Don Tassone again returned to his creative writing roots and again released a new book, Journeys Within. He is the author of two novels and eight short story collections. Don and his wife Liz are longtime Loveland residents. They have four children.

Father warns of illicit drugs cut with fentanyl in pill form
Loveland, Ohio – Tom Quehl is the co-founder of the Jack Quehl Foundation and the father to Jack Quehl, who died of fentanyl poisoning in 2021. Jack Quehl was 24 years old. He and his wife, Stephanie Quehl, now share Jack’s story and others’ to raise awareness.
Tom Quehl made an appearance on NewsNation with Kelsey Kernstine to discuss the rising prevalence of fentanyl laced pills.
“With the shortage of Adderall and Xanax out there, they’re trying to fight depression or ADHD, and they’re reaching out to the street, and they’re finding drugs that are laced with fentanyl,” Tom Quehl said. “And if it’s not killing them … they’re getting something that has a different taste to it, and now they become an addict and a regular customer. And that spiral is something I don’t want to see.”
