Local Quilt Business Selected to be Featured in National Publication!

Loveland, Ohio – Over the past couple of years, the Historic District of Loveland has really come along and so has its businesses! Loveland businesses’ both seasoned and new have been racking up the accolades locally and nationally. Recently a business right out of the West Loveland Historic District called, The Quilter’s Studio of Loveland & QSL Workshop, was selected to be featured in one of the most well-known publications, Better Homes and Garden’s Quilt Sampler Magazine.

“I truly was shocked! It was my first attempt at getting in the magazine and I didn’t expect to get in,” Karen Breed, the owner of The Quilter’s Studio of Loveland & QSL Workshop, explained, “My shop is for very creative people who like to create their own selection as opposed to walking in a shop and having a stack of kits you can grab that is a replication of something someone else has made!” Breed says at her quilt shop customers see something they like and are able to pick their own spin, which is what really sets her shop apart from other quilt shops.

Quilt Sampler Magazine is a prestigious quilt publication that features the top quilt shops in North America. Although it is only published twice a year, the magazine itself has been running strong since 1995. Yearly, the magazine conducts a competition in which quilt shop owners from across the United States are able to apply to be featured as one of the top 10 quilt shops in North America. Over 3,000 quilt shops were eligible to apply for a multipage profile in Quilt Sampler. Quilt shop owners all across the United States submitted a detailed application including the quilt shop’s history, business promotions, charitable work, teaching schedules, and design philosophies. Quilt experts, including those from the American Patchwork and Quilting staff, reviewed the applications and then selected the 10 best quilt shops accordingly.

This year The Quilter’s Studio of Loveland & QSL Workshop will appear in the Quilt Sampler as one of the best quilt shops in North America! The issue will be released on May 1st. The 10-page spread will also feature an original quilt design from the employees of The Quilter’s Studio of Loveland and QSL Workshop along with instructions on how the quilt was made. Breed couldn’t be more pleased with the honor from Quilt Sampler as she has had a passion for the art of quilting since 1990!

“I had to create an original design that they had to approve. Then send the finished quilt to them so they could photograph it,” Breed said. “It will be part of the photo spread. It’s pretty awesome that the issue comes out this May as it will be my 10-year anniversary.”

Breed was formerly in two separate buildings at the corner of Wall Street and West Loveland Avenue that she lovingly renovated in 2010. When she outgrew the space she purchased and renovated the building and grounds of her current location at the corner of West Loveland Avenue and Loveland Madeira Road in 2016.

“Quilt Sampler already did the photoshoot in November. I found out last July and spent all of those months preparing for the photoshoot, but wasn’t allowed to tell anyone that my shop was selected,” Breed said.

**Inside The Quilter’s Studio of Loveland & QSL Workshop**

The art of quilting was brought to America by the original colonists in the nineteenth-century. As settlers moved west so did quilting. When quilting finally entered into the Great Plains it took off from there! Although Americans discovered quilting hundreds of years ago according to the Better Homes and Garden’s Quilt Sampler’s press release quilting is bigger than ever!

“The art of quilting has changed dramatically since the days of quilting bees in church basements, and quilting is experiencing a major renaissance. A Quilting Consumer Insights study completed by American Patchwork & Quilting magazine reports that the U.S. quilting market is composed of 4.2 million avid quilters. [Video/Photos] Tiger basketball star Jillian Hayes reaches 1,000 points

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland High School Winter sports have kicked their seasons off with a bang! One Tiger team has really made a mark for themselves in the ECC, improving their record to 7-1 with a 7 game winning streak! The Women’s Loveland High school Basketball team is currently at the top of the ECC with several individual Tigers at the top of the conference for their own personal stats, one Tiger, in particular, being senior Jillian Hayes.

**Jillian Hayes and her family on the night she accepted her commemorative 1,000th point ball. The ball was presented on Friday, December 20 during the Men’s basketball against Milford.**

Hayes, a 6’2 forward, reached her 1,000 point milestone at home against Walnut Hills on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Prior to the big game, Hayes needed 27 points to reach her 1,000 points and impressively enough Hayes had 27 points and 10 rebounds. Loveland ended up grabbing the win 78-67! This was the Tigers’ first win over former ECC champs Walnut Hills since the start of the 2016 basketball season. Currently, Hayes is in 4th place in the ECC for points averaging 16.4 per game, 2nd in defensive rebounds averaging 9.1 per game, 2nd in blocks averaging 2.0 per game, and 5th in steals averaging 2.8 per game.

Since Hayes’ big 1,000 point moment she has had some other very high scoring games. She scored 17 points at Turpin, 23 points at Milford, 15 points at home against Withrow, and 13 points at West Clermont giving her a total now of 1,068 points. Earlier this year Hayes committed to Coach Heard and the Cincinnati Bearcats to continue her already stellar basketball career.

Jilian Partin was the last Tiger to reach the coveted 1,000 points on December 2, 2004. Partin played for the Loveland Tigers from 2001-2005 under Head Coach Wray Jean Conner. Partin totaled 1,356 points for her beyond impressive high school career. At the time Assistant Varsity Coach, Ken Tracey decided to do some research into the world of the “1,000 point club” and said that fewer than one percent of Ohio high school basketball players, either men or women ever reach 1,000 points in their career!

Currently, Partin is at the top of the board as the All-Time Leading Scorer in Loveland Women’s Basketball history with 1,356 points. Partin also holds the Loveland Highschool Women’s Basketball record for Most Free Throws made with 329.

Jillian Hayes is officially 288 points from the All-Time Leading Scorer record! Hayes will get the opportunity to get closer to this memorable accolade on Monday, December 30th at 7:30 PM at St. Ursula.

Loveland High School’s Winter Sports Teams Kick the Season off right with Multiple Victories-Part 2

Loveland, Ohio – The holidays are here and so is Loveland High School’s winter sports season! Thus far LHS’s winter athletics have begun their season with a bang so what better way to showcase these talented Tiger coaches and student-athletes then to bring to you part 2 of the Loveland sports 411!

Men’s Wrestling

The Men’s Wrestling team started off their season with a dual victory at Sycamore on December 5th, winning 49 to 25. The Tigers won 9 out of the 14 matches! Check out the moments captured from the big win at Sycamore below!

Men’s and Women’s Swimming/Diving

The Men’s and Women’s Swim and Dive team kicked off their season at Sycamore on December 3rd and December 7th for the Sycamore High School Invitational. The Tigers had both impressive dives and freestyles! Nami Cannon took first place in the 100 Butterfly and the Women’s dive team consisting of Sydney Keil, Shelby Cline, Kali Egan, and Morgan Eversole also collected some very impressive results!

The Men’s and Women’s Swim/Dive Team competed at Walnut Hills on Tuesday, December 10th, in which we will bring you the results when we receive them, and will be swimming back into action on Tuesday, December 17th at New Richmond at 4 PM.

Men’s Bowling

The Loveland Men’s Bowling Team has been bowling away the competition, improving their record to 4-1 in the ECC and 5-1 overall! The Tigers are currently in 2nd place in the ECC. The Men’s Tiger’s Bowling Team faced Kings again on Wednesday, December 4th at Crossgate Lanes. The Tiger’s bowled their hearts out but unfortunately lost 2571 to 2538. Loveland competed again on Wednesday, December 11th bouncing back with a big win against Walnut Hills, 2463 to 1851. The Loveland Women’s Bowling are dominating the ECC holding the 1st place spot with a 5-0 record in the ECC and a 6-0 record overall! On December 3rd and 4th, the Tigers grabbed two wins against Kings with a score of 1929 to 1869 on Tuesday and 2054 to 1811 on Wednesday. The Tigers are in 2nd place in the ECC for “team average,” holding a solid 700.5, and Tiger bowler Grady Pettit is in 3rd place in the ECC for her individual average, which is a 170.4. The Loveland Women’s Bowling team will compete again today against Walnut Hills at 3:30 PM at Madison Bowl and on Saturday at 9 AM at Western Bowl for the Holiday Classic.

Academic Team

The Loveland High School Academic Team has also had a great start to their season improving their record in the ECC to 3-1! On Wednesday, December 4th the Tigers competed at Walnut Hills where they gained both a win and a loss. The Academic Team won 81 to 68 in the first game and lost 77 to 69 in the second game. The Tigers competed again on Wednesday, December 11th at Turpin and achieved two big wins! Loveland won 82 to 51 in the first game and 77 to 57 in the second game. The Academic Team will compete again in the new year on January 8th against Milford at 4 PM.

Loveland, Ohio – Following quite a successful Fall sports season, Loveland High School Athletics has officially started their Winter sports season and the victories are already rolling in! At the conclusion of the Fall sports season, Loveland High School Athletics still held the top spot for the ECC All-Sports Trophy with a total of 62 points. With all of LHS’s Fall sports successes, it’s safe to say the entire Loveland sports community is more than excited to watch the Winter sports teams grab some wins! Men’s Basketball

This week the Men’s Basketball team kicked off their season at Aiken on Tuesday. Although the Tigers lost 58 to 53, they battled for the win until the very end! Ian Cox played quite the game racking up 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Many Tigers contributed to the season opener such as Alec Soth, who added 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists, Brenton Foust, who scored 9 points and grabbed 3 rebounds, and Aaron Krabacher, who had 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Loveland’s Collin Hedgepeth had 11 points and 3 rebounds, Brenton Foust collected 16 points and 3 assists, and Aaron Krabacher added 8 points to the final score.

Loveland Men’s Basketball Team will be back in action on Tuesday at 7:30 PM at Kings and then again on Friday at Walnut Hills at 7:30 PM.

Women’s Basketball

The Loveland Tiger’s Women’s Basketball Team had quite a successful week grabbing 2 big ECC wins! On Wednesday the Tiger’s took on Kings at home winning 57 to 22, and on Saturday gained another win at home against Walnut Hills, 78 to 67. With the Tigers, two ECC wins this week that puts them at 3-0 in the ECC and 3-1 overall making the Tigers 2nd in the ECC. Several of the Tigers were recognized for their accomplishments this week! The Women’s Basketball Team put up some impressive stats at both the Kings and Walnut Hills games! Jenna Batsch had 16 points and 8 steals against Kings while Jillian Hayes added 13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals and Tess Broermann had 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 steals. The Tiger’s didn’t stop their impressive stats there, they also put up some great numbers against Walnut Hills including Jillian Hayes putting up her 1,000th point! Hayes put up 27 points and 10 rebounds while her teammate Kate Garry put up 21 points, 5 of those baskets coming from the 3 point line, and her other teammate Tess Broermann put up 12 points and 5 steals. Loveland High School Basketball Programs Look to Change School History!

Loveland, Ohio – As many LHS Fall athletes wrap up their seasons and collect their accolades, the Winter athletes are preparing for what they hope to be a very successful 2019-2020 season!

So what do all us Tiger fans look forward to after the big Thanksgiving feast? The beginning of basketball season! LOVELAND MAGAZINE TV took a trip back down Tiger Trail to visit with the Men’s Basketball coach, Rob Reis, and the Women’s Basketball coach, Darnell Parker, to talk about just why they are excited about the season. With the Men’s and Women’s Tiger programs coming off successful seasons last year, both coaches agreed that this could be the year that both their teams and their players change school history. Loveland, Ohio – On Wednesday, November 13th, several Tigers were recognized for both their minds and their athletic abilities at the 2019 Annual Fall Sports Awards at Loveland High School! LHS Athletic Director, Brian Conatser invited friends, families, and Fall Tiger student-athletes to celebrate their 2019 sports seasons.

Conatser began the heartfelt evening with a tradition of this ceremony at LHS…the senior athletes are announced and led into the gym by their head coach. Conatser invited LHS’s Site Manager and Facilities Coordinator, Jake Elfers to announce the 2019 Fall senior athletes and their coaches.

Next Conatser took the opportunity to thank everyone who made the athletes and coaches seasons so special! “Thank you, Seniors, for your leadership and laying the groundwork within our programs,” Conatser said, “This evening I would like to introduce the administration and members from the athletic department that have joined me in this celebration. Principal, Peggy Johnson, Assistant Director of Student Athletics, Eric Fry, Site Manager & Facilities Coordinator, Jake Elfers. And Finally…our Administrative Assistant in the Athletic Department, Kristy Brulport. A special thanks to all the individuals who support and assist the athletic department and our student-athletes on a daily basis. Parents, Student-Athletes please give your parents a round of applause for their support, feeding you, driving you to and from practices, and always being a part of your games and competition,” Conatser added, “LAB Team Liaisons please stand and be recognized. We appreciate your time commitment and efforts…as you are the link between our Boosters and our Athletic Programs. Thank you for all you do. Coaches, thank you for the tremendous amount of time you spend with our student-athletes. We appreciate you mentoring our young men and women and teaching them the life skills necessary to be successful both now and in their future. Thank you! We are “Extremely Proud” of our teams and programs this Fall season. You have all been Very enjoyable to Watch and Cheer on,” Conatser said.

The Tigers’ 2019 Fall Sports Season marked one of the most successful Fall sports seasons in school history with 5 ECC Champions, 4 ECC Coaches of the Year and 2 ECC Athletes of the Year. With all of these accolades, this puts the Loveland Tigers in the number one spot in running for the All-Sports Trophy. Conatser was sure to give praise to both the coaches and athletes for their designated seasons as he shared the “Coaches Highlights of the Fall Season” told through the coaches’ own words during the ceremony.

Next on the Fall Sports Awards agenda was the recognition of all of the Fall sports athletes who received top ECC honors. You can read about which Tigers received ECC accolades in the Loveland Sports 411 With Cassie Mattia HERE.

Following the announcement of the athletes who played all 4 years varsity in their designated sport, was the presentation of the 2019 Fall “Sportsperson of the Season,” and shortly after the presentation of the “Edward Jones Community Student-Athlete Award.” Loveland Magazine plans on featuring these two very special awards and its winners in a separate article coming soon!

New Mom and Pop Shop Brings Both the Sweet and Salty “Provisions” to the Loveland Bike Trail!

Loveland, Ohio – The “Loveland” Little Miami Bike Trail offers something for everyone. Whether you like to ride bikes, eat at authentic family-owned restaurants, shop at vintage antique shops, or drink locally handcrafted beers, the bike trail in Loveland allows everyone to enjoy doing what they love to do. Historic downtown has been quickly transforming into a place where families and friends can come and have a vacation like experience in their own backyard. We at Loveland Magazine call it, “The Staycation Resort of Southwest Ohio”. Naturally, business owners have recognized this about downtown Loveland, brought their own businesses into the historic area, and this is why it is thriving.

Bringing to Loveland the delicious snacks that she has made for her family for so many years is the vision she has for her new shop!

Over the past couple of years, downtown Loveland has seen several family-owned businesses plant their feet right in the heart of downtown making the area that much more unique. As new and exciting businesses continue to join the historic downtown area businesses coming in looking to join the area have realized in order to thrive now in the area you have to offer something unique. Finding that particular “niche” the community doesn’t know it needs but in all actuality wants is how new businesses are making a name for themselves. Coming in sweet, salty and always fresh the “Loveland” Little Miami Bike Trail introduces to you the community of Loveland, “Trailside Provisions.”

What’s that lingering scent on the Loveland Little Miami Bike Trail? I’m not talking about the delicious smell of brunch or even something sweet like the scent of beautiful Fall leaves, I’m talking something savory. The smell of something buttery, caramelized and decadent led me to a new business right off the Loveland bike trail where “Plaid Room Records” used to call home. “Trailside Provisions,” just opened their doors to the community on Saturday, November 16th and let me tell you the shop’s lingering smells are bringing people in to see what the new “mom and pop” shop is all about!

Vickie Larcomb, began her journey in historic downtown Mason, Ohio at a shop very similar to the concept of Trailside Provisions called “Main Street Sweets and Popcorn.” Larcomb shared that she always had a passion for cooking whether it was creating a whole new “treat,” like the peanut butter caramel popcorn or sticking to more traditional “provisions,” such as the chocolate malted milk balls (and yes they are TRIPLE DIPPED in chocolate), she always enjoyed creating! After much success with her family-run business, Main Street Sweets and Popcorn, Larcomb knew that the shop concept was something that could be used in places similar to downtown Mason. Larcomb said she had heard about the historic downtown Loveland area and all the wonderful growth and development the area had been experiencing. She immediately recognized the similarities between Mason’s downtown area and Loveland’s downtown area and began to think of a “niche” that would fit right into the historic downtown Loveland culture. That’s when the Trailside Provisions concept was born!

“Trailside Provisions” offers gourmet Pancake Mix Kits, decadent Maple Syrup, and a unique snack called Maple Wafers!

Larcomb thought why not keep the concept of Main Street Sweets and Popcorn, but add a little “trailside” flare to it as the location she had her eye on was right off the Loveland bike trail. Larcomb brought the idea to her family and from there Larcomb and her family established a new home for their business, Trailside Provisions. After months of planning, building, and creating Larcomb says she can’t wait to see how the community responds to the new shop!

So just what is this new shop off the bike trail all about? Well for starter’s Larcomb’s husband, Ron, handcrafted all of the store’s fixtures, giving each guest that comes in quite the woodsy, trail-like experience. On top of getting treated to the top-notch interior architectural ambiance, guests also get to enjoy the aroma of fresh buttery popcorn being made right there in the shop as they walk around. Trailside Provisions, of course, offers a number of unique, whole made goods, but what really sets this shop apart is the gourmet popcorn. From caramel with pecans to caramel with peanuts to cinnamon toast caramel, Trailside Provisions has a popcorn combination for everyone not to mention the shop makes their “original” caramel, cheese, and butter popcorns fresh every day. Eat it in the shop, while walking the trail, or take it home for movie night or your next party.

Larcomb and her family’s shop doesn’t just stop at popcorn, it also sells a variety of Cook Tavern Soup mixes, seasoning and marinade kits, homemade vanilla marshmallows, bagged and freshly brewed coffee, and other “provisional” snacks such as pretzels and chocolate almonds. Oh, and did I mention Larcomb handcrafts all of these sweet and salty treats herself?! I asked Larcomb why she enjoys cooking so much and she said that cooking for her loved ones has always been something she has enjoyed. Larcomb explained that being able to provide the community of Loveland with the delicious snacks that she has made for her family for so many years is quite frankly the vision she has for her new shop!

So what are you waiting for Loveland? Bike, walk, or jog on down to Trailside Provisions, a shop where you will be sure to get the Loveland “trailside” experience!

Trailside Provisions (Facebook) is located on the East side of the Brown Building at 120 Karl Brown Way in Historic Downtown Loveland off the Little Miami Bike Trail. Trailside Provisions is open 10 a.m to 8 p.m Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m to 9 p.m Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m to 5 p.m on Sundays.

Loveland/Symmes Fire Department Introduces “Smart911” to the Community

Loveland, Ohio – The speed and the accuracy when receiving a 911 call are top priorities to any 911 dispatcher. Although these 911 dispatchers do their best to focus on speed and accuracy one fact that many people may not know is that 80 percent of 911 calls are made from a cell phone meaning no matter how quickly a dispatcher works to alert first responders that dispatcher is only able to identify the caller’s phone number and a VERY vague sense of their location. If a 911 caller is unable to speak due to their emergency situation how is a 911 dispatcher able to effectively get emergency personnel to where they need be quick? This is a problem that emergency responders have been working hard for a very long time to make better or even fix permanently.

Smart911

Recently the Loveland-Symmes Fire Department and Northeast Communications came across a solution that many police and fire departments have adopted due to the 911 issue. It’s called “Smart911,” and it’s a national 911 database that ensures when you dial 9-1-1 your information is readily available. According to Smart911’s website when you download the Smart911 application to your phone, “you can provide 9-1-1 call takers and first responders critical information you want them to know in any kind of emergency.

A Mobile App For A Mobile Community

You can now download the Smart911 app for free to create a Safety Profile and receive targeted alerts.

When you call 9-1-1, your Smart911 Safety Profile displays on the 9-1-1 screen and the call takers can view your addresses, medical information, home information, description of pets and vehicles, and emergency contacts. You can provide as much or as little information as you like.

Smart911 is a national service meaning your Smart911 Safety Profile travels with you and is visible to any participating 9-1-1 center nationwide.”

Jon D. Frye, Deputy Chief of Loveland-Symmes Fire Department couldn’t hold back his excitement for the Smart911 partnership with Northeast Communications.

“We are so excited to announce that Northeast Communications has partnered with Smart 911, a National 911 Database to ensure your information is available at the time of need. Please register yourself and your family at www.smart911.com or download the Smart911 app on your smartphone. You can list all your information about your home, medical history, medications, best door to access and much more. Anytime you call 911 within our community your information will automatically be available to our dispatchers,” Frye explained, “Smart911 is free, all we ask is our residents and businesses register online. Wherever you travel your information goes with you, as long as the nearest 911 center are subscribers of the Smart911 product,” Frye added, “Smart 911 has many other features, such as reverse text 911 if a caller dials 911 but is unable to speak due to the situation, language barrier or medical issues the dispatcher can immediately send a text to your phone number and start a text conversation. Smart 911 instantly accesses all of the information that you have put into the system to ensure the quickest, most appropriate information is passed along to first responders.”

L.H.S’s Mike Dunlap Provides Tiger Students and Athletes the Tools for a Bright Future

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland has always been known as a community filled with love, hence why Loveland is called the “Sweetheart of Ohio.” Each and every citizen in Loveland makes up an important piece of the community, but in saying that it’s up to the citizen as to what they do with their role as an important piece of that community. This is what makes up a community’s “D.N.A.”

Over the past year, Loveland Magazine has been in search of community members that truly play an important role in Loveland’s D.N.A. Thus far we have found some very special candidates for our feature column, “What’s In Loveland’s D.N.A.” After taking some time to really search for the next featured candidate we finally came across someone who not only lives in Loveland but has dedicated their career to impacting the youth of Loveland in the most positive way possible!

Mike Dunlap has been an active member of the Loveland Community since 5th grade, and yes he was a Loveland Tiger! Dunlap teaches Science at Loveland High School and is the head coach of Loveland High School’s Men’s Soccer Team. Dunlap has been involved with LHS and the Tiger students for over 20 years and his dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed!

Mike “Flipped” his Classroom

Growing up Dunlap admitted that he struggled with ADHD and so learning something in the classroom and then trying to go home and apply what he learned in his homework was a huge struggle! When Dunlap got the teaching position at Loveland High School he knew that there would be students that struggled with ADHD just like him. This is when Dunlap introduced “Flipping the Classroom” to his students. With this teaching model students are able to watch pre-recorded lectures as their “homework assignment” and then do the traditional homework in class with the teacher and fellow students. When Dunlap introduced this idea to his students their grade point averages shot up almost immediately! Dunlap’s influence in the classroom and on the soccer field is why he is known for shaping so many student-athletes into successful individuals!
