  • Loveland’s Howard Jacob Lawrence to play at Walsh University

Loveland’s Howard Jacob Lawrence to play at Walsh University

    by Loveland Lacrosse

Loveland, Ohio – Loveland High School boys lacrosse standout Howard Jacob Lawrence recently committed to attend and play college lacrosse at Walsh University (DII).

“I really liked football when I was young, but I began to play lacrosse and knew I loved it,” said Howard. “I’m jarvis-verticalvery excited to continue my education at Walsh. I’ve worked hard with my coaches to improve so I can be ready to move on and play at the next level.”

The 6’2 185 lb. close defenseman for the Tigers attracted the attention of a number of top regional college programs, including Ohio Northern, University of Dayton and University of Cincinnati.

“I chose Walsh because of the size of the school, academic options, coaching staff and a structure that I really felt made a great fit for me, ” he said.

A two-sport athlete, Lawrence earned varsity letters in both lacrosse and football. As a starter in 2015, he scooped up 47 groundballs, bouncing between close defense and the long stick middie position. Off the field, Howard excels in the classroom, carrying a 3.7 GPA and has been recognized for his academics with High Honors recognition throughout his high school career. He also mentors fellow students in his German class, and is an active volunteer in his church.

“Howard started every game for us in 2015, and has really become an anchor for our defense,’ said Mike Pritz, Loveland’s head coach since 2014. “He’s got a great combination of size and ability, but most of all, coachability.” Pritz went on to note Lawrence had big shoes to fill to replace the departing Tanner Griffin, now playing Division I lacrosse at Hofstra. Griffin was a 2014 All-American selection, as well as that year’s Southern Ohio Overall Player of the Year. “We’re looking forward to watching him play at the next level, but for this spring the coaches are more than excited to have Howard around for another season,” said Pritz.

Lawrence was asked about the team’s outlook this spring, and his thoughts on his final season of Tiger lacrosse. He said, “I feel we’re going to have a strong season. We play with a lot of teamwork and speed  “I’ve enjoyed playing lacrosse for the past 7 years, I basically grew up with many of my teammates.”

Howard will now prepare himself for his final season with the Tigers and his future with the Walsh University Cavaliers.

Master plan to be a comprehensive district, parent and community collaboration to guide Loveland Athletics for the next decade

Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District has launched a Loveland City Schools Athletic Facilities Master Planning Process. [quote_right]“Born from the vision to make Loveland the premier athletic program in Southwest Ohio, and with the mission to use athletics to advance the education goals of the district.”[/quote_right] School administrators in conjunction with the Loveland Athletic Boosters will begin in January to engage district parents and community members to assess district athletic facility needs.

“It all begins with listening,” said Loveland District Director of Student Athletics Julie Renner.

“Listening to our students, listening to our parents, listening to our community and our coaches – all to gain a comprehensive understanding of what the district needs to focus on for our athletic facilities beyond the tennis courts that we are in the process of getting bids on to construct. That project is moving forward. You can’t overstate the importance of extracurricular activities in the development of our students; this process is really about enriching the total experience our Tigers have while at Loveland.”

    [quote_box_left]

    The Timeline
    Phase 1 – Needs Assessment
    January 25 – February 29
    Phase 2 – Evaluation
    March 1 – April 30

    Phase 3 – Design
    May 1 – August 30

[/quote_box_left]Beginning in March, the district plans to prioritize needed facility projects, and by April a presentation should be ready to be shared with the community.

You can stay connected to this process by visiting the Loveland High School website and clicking “Athletic Facilities Master Plan” under the left navigation (bottom link), to get latest updates, review community engagement data, and offer feedback on the process. Or begin, by taking the surveys below…

“This is the perfect time to be engaging our community in order to cast the future of athletics in the school district,” said Loveland Assistant Superintendent Keith Koehne. “We have seen with the planning for our new tennis courts at the high school that a comprehensive Facilities Master Plan can help guide all of our athletic facilities for the next 10 years. Upon completion, we believe we will achieve the hallmarks of being the premier athletic program in Southwest Ohio – to include broad participation, quality athletic programs and outstanding facilities.”

Benefit the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults

    Dear Loveland Magazine Readers,

We are doing a fundraiser on Saturday, January 9 at 10:30 AM at Power Ryde for our friend, Mackenzie Johnson, who is running 4000 miles across the country this summer in 49 days with 29 other runners to benefit the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (ages 15 – 39).  We are asking for a $20 minimum donation with all proceeds benefitting the Ulman Cancer Fund (http://ulmanfund.org/).

Here is the link to sign up for the ryde: https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/ws?studioid=36123&stype=-7&sTG=2&sVT=6&sView=day&sLoc=1&sTrn=2&date=01/09/16

New ryders (who haven’t been to Power Ryde before) can fill out a waiver online so they don’t need to fill out a paper waiver the day of the event.

Mackenzie is a resident of Loveland, having graduated from Loveland High School in 2014.  While there she was Captain of the XC team and their top female runner.  She also ran track and played soccer for Loveland.  She currently is a Sophomore in the Honors College at the University of South Carolina.  In SC she is also a group fitness instructor and coaches the local Girls on the Run.

We will also have a collection jar on our front desk, announce the fundraiser after classes and post the fundraiser on Facebook.  Feel free to share any or all of this information since the fundraiser is less than a month away.

On a side note, we are doing another fundraiser on Saturday, January 23, for the Loveland Breakfast Club (which falls under the Loveland Food Pantry) that provides breakfast for underprivileged children.  Lauren Aiello is spearheading that effort.  And tentatively on February 6 we are doing a fundraiser for JDRF (details still being worked out).
