    Loveland, Ohio – What began last school year with a couple of classes has grown into a building-wide student council on a mission of Tiger Care. Meet the newly formed Loveland Elementary School (LES) Kindness Council – with each third and fourth grade classroom represented and working toward monthly projects that create a Kindness Initiative throughout Loveland, Cincinnati and even across the world.

    “This new structure is creating school-wide unity and making our projects bigger than they have ever been before,” said LES Teacher Melissa Prenger, who was one of the teacher sponsors for the Kindness Initiative last school year.

    Prenger said students started the school year in September 2017 with a donation drive of personal care items to benefit Matthew 25: Ministries for hurricane survivors.

    “We were able to collect so many items, we needed two large vehicles to deliver it all,” said Prenger.

    “We were able to collect so many items, we needed two large vehicles to deliver it all,” said Prenger. “We collected socks again in October for Socktober. Because it was a school-wide initiative, we were able to collect over 3,000 pairs of socks to local homeless shelters in Cincinnati.”

    The Kindness Council members and their families delivered the donations, making the initiative reach beyond the school building walls. In November, students supported Read to Feed; each student in the school had sponsors support them for a week of reading. The proceeds of their sponsorship allowed LES to donate nearly $4,000 to Loveland’s LIFE Food Pantry. In December, the entire school made cards for soldiers serving away from their families, as well as for nursing home residents. The Kindness Council also designed and sold Holiday Grams, enabling over $800 to be donated to the Adopt A U.S. Soldier program.

    “During the months of January and February, we collected pop can pull tabs for The Ronald McDonald House,” said Prenger. “We will take them and see how many pounds we were able to collect – but it is a lot! We also collected winter care items, to create winter care bags to be distributed to the homeless of Cincinnati. I’m incredibly proud of the students – they truly are spreading kindness, compassion, and empathy to not just the local community, but communities around the world.”

    Loveland High School Teacher Abra Koch named 2018 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow

    Abra Koch one of 40 educators to travel on global expeditions for hands-on professional development

    Loveland, Ohio – Loveland High School (LHS) Spanish Teacher Abra Koch has been named a 2018 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow (GTF). The GTF Program is a professional development opportunity for Pre-K-12 educators made possible by a partnership between Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society.

    Koch is one of 40 educators selected from the United States and Canada to travel on one of the global expeditions.

    An annual competitive application process is used to select educators and host them aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ voyages for a life-changing, field-based experience; Koch is one of 40 educators selected from the United States and Canada to travel on one of the global expeditions.

    “I am so honored and humbled to be chosen as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow,” said Koch. “This is a professional development opportunity for teachers to bring geo-literacy to our students and help them be more connected to the world. Through this opportunity I am hoping to infuse a love of exploration into my students and help them to become explorers of the world around them, locally and globally.” 

    In December Koch will be on an expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavor II.

    In December Koch will be on an expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavor II. Her expedition is December 7-16. On the expedition Koch will explore the habitats and species on the Galápagos as well as the culture and history of this fascinating location. 

    “I am so excited to explore a location that is so ecologically important and unique,” said Koch. “There are so many endemic species in the Galápagos that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Having the chance to see them in person, explore the habitats and learn how their adaptations have developed will be amazing!”

    “We congratulate Mrs. Koch on this remarkable professional accomplishment,” said LHS Principal Peggy Johnson. “We are excited about this learning experience for her, and what it will mean for how she will continue to enhance the classroom experience for our students.”

    I am hoping that this experience will help my students to nourish their curiosity, explore new places and learn from the world around them.

    “When I return to Loveland, I will work with my students to practice exploration using Spanish as a tool to observe, question, hypothesize and understand the world in which we live,” said Koch. “I am hoping that this experience will help them to nourish their curiosity, explore new places and learn from the world around them.”

    The program – in its 12th year – is named in honor of Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Chairman Emeritus National Geographic Society, in recognition of his decades-long work supporting Pre-K-12 teachers and promoting geography education across the U.S. and Canada.

    We are proud to announce Loveland High School’s production of the Broadway hit, Into the Woods, presented in the high school auditorium on April 11-14th at 7 pm. There will be a special Happily Ever After matinee on Saturday at 2 pm, accompanied by a meet and greet for the children who want to step into their favorite fairy tales.

    This musical entails the story of a baker and his wife, who are sent on a wild goose chase into the woods to break a curse placed upon them by a vengeful witch. Meanwhile, Cinderella longs to go to the royal festival while Red Riding Hood is off to visit her grandmother.  Many other fairy tale characters, including Snow White and Jack with his beanstalk, interweave their stories throughout this riveting show. Despite what you believe will happen midway through, the main characters end up realizing that you need to be careful of what you wish for… 

    Tickets are $10 for students and senior citizens, $12 for adults if bought ahead of the show time. Tickets at the door are $11 for students and senior citizens, $13 for adults. Children 4 and under are free.

    Creating a pathway to success at Loveland schools

    If only educating our young people were as simple as plugging in coordinates on a GPS, then every graduate would know exactly what he/she wants to do after high school and have a defined plan detailing how to get there.

    Well, Tiger Family… meet your new GPS: Academic Pathways.

    Think of Academic Pathways as guiding maps for our students as they explore personal career interests and make connections to their course sequencing beginning in middle school. The district has clearly defined Academic Pathways for careers in: Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communication; Business Management and Administration; Health Science; Information Technology (in partnership with University of Cincinnati); and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – with the phase-in of additional pathways in the 2018-2019 school year. 

    The Academic Pathways contain information about which courses are available at the middle school and high school that, in addition to meeting the core requirements, will be helpful in pursuing the chosen pathway. They also provide suggestions about opportunities for extended learning, such as job shadowing/mentoring and internship placements, as well as links to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ updated information about the various professions within the Academic Pathway. For instance, the Academic Pathway for business will tell you what courses you could take in middle school through graduation, and then define the career with sample job choices complete with expected pay.

    So, how do Tigers access this rich data?

    With the expansion of Naviance, a college/career readiness tool, into grades six-eight, students will begin their college/career planning. This spring, sixth-grade students will explore various careers in the system and begin to create goals for themselves that will be refined throughout their educational experience in grades seven-12, as students will be revisiting their electronic portfolio in Naviance every year. By beginning Naviance work at the middle school, our students will have a greater opportunity in high school for more in-depth explorations and planning as they continue to make more detailed post-secondary plans.

    Our buildings will equip parents with information to set up a special parent account in Naviance to share in this cutting-edge student journey.

    Educating our Tigers is not as simple as plugging in set coordinates to find their set direction – we know this, but with parents and the school working together through assisting our students in making the connection between their academics and their passions, we can better support their post-secondary planning, and grow college and career-ready Tigers.

    Loveland Athletic Director Julie Renner takes position outside education

    March 1st will be Julie Renner Day at Loveland High School

    Loveland, Ohio – Loveland High School (LHS) has announced that District Director of Student Athletics Julie Renner has accepted a position with FinalForms, a national athletic management solution company, and her final day will be March 2.


    “I would not be telling the truth if I said this was an easy decision; the last four and a half years I have spent at Loveland have been a blessing,” said Renner. “My husband took a new position at Marshall University this past summer, moving our family home to West Virginia. Therefore, I have accepted this new position so we can live together as a family.

    “Loveland High School is a wonderful school, in an outstanding district and community. I cannot say enough about the caring school staff and coaching staff that I have been privileged to work with over these past four years. Moreover, the parents, adults and Booster organizations who work so hard to support this school to make it the best place for not just a few kids but for all students. I will miss the students so much. They hold a special place in my heart and many memories which will be forever stamped in my mind.”

    “We often say, ‘Once a Tiger, always a Tiger’ and this is certainly true of our feelings for Mrs. Renner,” said LHS Principal Peggy Johnson. “We – the administration, the staff and the students – will certainly miss the spirit she has brought to this role, but we are also so excited for this unique professional opportunity for her.”

    Renner has served the district in the position of director of student athletics since 2013, and has helped manage a state champion football team, a state champion wrestler, and a state champion womens soccer team during her tenure.

    “I would like to extend my gratitude to the Board of Education, the Loveland Athletic Boosters, the Athletic Department and the entire administrative team,” said Renner. “I would like to thank everyone for making my work environment enjoyable and giving me the opportunity to work with students every day. I greatly appreciate all of your support and guidance over the tenure of my employment.” 

    The district will announce a transition plan in the very near future.

    Hello Tiger Family! 

    My name is Johnnie Kanoza, and I am the new Loveland City School District program coordinator for Loveland Educating Against Alcohol & Drugs, or – as we like to call it – LEAAD. This group, formally known as the Loveland Drug Task Force is in a transitional pilot year, but with the same commitment to stand – school and community – united as one to bring positive impact to our students.

    I have a true passion for health and wellness, with more than 10 years of professional experience in personal training and health coaching; in addition to my exciting new role with LEAAD, I am also the owner of Empowher Fitness Studio, focusing on women’s health. 

    From youth obesity to eating disorders, from alcohol consumption to drug use – addiction can present itself in many ways. As parents, we also have seen how social media has influenced behaviors and perceptions – one being a strong desire for instant gratification.

    In Loveland, with LEAAD – we are looking for opportunities to educate both parents and students to inspire the desire for true change.

If we can start this process when the need arises it can change the life direction for our students in a positive way. The key is to create habits today that will set a solid foundation and build confidence in better decision making.  

    I am a wife and a stepmom to three beautiful adult children. I have experienced first-hand the concerns of many unknowns that come with raising great adults. Through this and our personal journey together I developed a desire to help impact more young adult lives.    

    This opportunity gives me the ability to do just that.
