StubHub to Issue Ohioans Refunds

Columbus, Ohio – The ticket reseller StubHub is issuing refunds to thousands of Ohioans who purchased tickets to events that were later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in response to a multistate investigation lead by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.
“We’d all like a refund from the ride COVID has taken us on, but in this case, there was written policy not followed,” Yost said. “That’s why we went to bat for Ohioans here and put money back in their pockets.”
Ohio, nine other states, and the District of Columbia initiated a coordinated investigation after receiving numerous complaints from consumers that StubHub was violating its own policy under the “FanProtect Guarantee.”
The policy stated that consumers would receive full refunds on ticket purchases, including fees, if events were canceled. StubHub suspended that policy in March 2020, following the mass-cancellation of events triggered by COVID concerns.
The California-based company began denying refund requests, instead of telling consumers that they would receive credits equal to 120% of their purchases for future events.
The policy change affected more than 12,000 consumers who had bought tickets to Ohio events through StubHub before March 25, 2020.
StubHub has agreed to settle a complaint filed Tuesday by AG Yost in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. The deal requires StubHub to:
The consent agreement includes an injunction that requires StubHub to:
- Honor its refund policies.
- Not change its refund policies for purchased tickets unless the purchasing consumer consents to the change.
- Promptly process any refund requests it receives going forward for the events at issue.
The agreement also assesses a $654,100 civil penalty, which is suspended provided that StubHub pays the refunds owed to Ohio consumers and does not violate the other terms of the agreement.
Consumers who have not been contacted by StubHub and believe they are entitled to a refund may contact either StubHub at (866) 788-2482 or the Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-282-0515 or www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov.

Submit a Valentine Card design starting today

Loveland, Ohio – If you are a little Miami River Chamber Alliance member, resident of the Loveland School District, or work in the Loveland area your Valentine Card Design original artwork may be submitted.
Artwork must reflect or incorporate the theme: “Love is…..” and must also include (or provide space for) the phrase, “There is nothing in this world so sweet as love.”
One-color, two-color, and full-color entries are acceptable. Artwork must be flat (two-dimensional) and reduce proportionately to fit within a 5 inch by 3 ¾ inch space, the size of the printed Valentine’s Day cards.
The submission deadline is November 20, 2021.
Last year’s winner was Cindy Wilmes and she created this video of her taking one of her cards to be stamped at and mailed from the Loveland Post office.

The winning card design will be featured as a “Cover Photo” in Loveland Magazine.

The 411 on Pickleball Locations and Equipment!

Last week I had the opportunity to interview four local Pickleball players about the newest sport in town that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and ping pong. Pickleball has NO age limitations and can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone!
Jerry Ernst, a Pickleball instructor, and a Cincinnati Pickleball Club member, Kathleen Cupito and her husband John Cupito met me up at McCoy Park to teach me a thing or two about the game of Pickleball!

What you Need to Know About Pickleball; the Sports World’s Newest Craze!

Loveland, Ohio – Sports has always been one of the best ways to both stay in shape and connect on a competitive level with friends and family. Unfortunately, most sports require so much physicality that you have to stop playing once you reach a certain age, but now there is a new sport in town that has NO age limitations and can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone. Introducing Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and ping pong!
Pickleball got its start in 1965 on Bainbridge Island (close to Seattle, Washington) when 3 fathers, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, came together to break up the monotony of their children’s typical summer activities. Joan Pritchard came up with the name as a sort of “reference to the thrown-together leftover non-starters in the ‘pickle boat’ of crew races.” Fast forward to 1967, and Pritchard had the first Pickleball court built in his neighbor’s backyard!
By the time 1990 rolled around, Pickleball was being played in every single state in the U.S! Because the game itself was gaining so much popularity in 2005 the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was formed, and eventually in 2020 became known as USA Pickleball. Now there are currently over 9,000 Pickleball locations across the U.S and over 4.2 million people participating!
So how do you play Pickleball? That’s a question that I needed to both see and hear for myself as I had never even heard of the sport until a few weeks ago! Here is a basic outline of what you need to know to get started “Pickleballing:”
- Can be played both indoors and outdoors on a Badminton court (20 x 44) with a modified tennis net in between (34′ in the middle, 36′ outside)
- Played with a paddle and whiffle ball (outdoor balls have more holes due to wind)
- Can be played as Doubles or Singles
- The game is played to 11 and you have to win by 2 (you can only score when you serve)
- When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, and the serving team must let it bounce before returning (2 bounce rule)
- The Non-Volley Zone or “The Kitchen” is within 7 feet of the net and is not to be crossed or it is considered a “fault” (any action that stops play because of a rule violation)
After reading over the basics of Pickleball I knew I wanted to get more of a hands-on experience with experts that had a passion for the game. Jerry Ernst, a Pickleball instructor, and a Cincinnati Pickleball Club member, Kathleen Cupito and her husband John Cupito (avid Pickleball players) met me up at McCoy Park near Downtown Loveland, Ohio to teach me a thing or two about the game of Pickleball!

Loveland High School Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2020
Loveland, Ohio – Four former standout Loveland High School athletes will be inducted into the Class of 2020 Hall of Fame during the last Tiger football game of the season.
The Loveland High School Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2020 will enjoy dinner together on October 21 and they will be introduced to fans attending the football game at Tiger Stadium against Winton Woods during the break between the 1st and 2nd quarter on October 22.
There was no traditional Winter induction ceremony for the group last year because of COVID 19. The traditional ceremony is usually in January during halftime of a varsity basketball game.

Fireworks Alert for pets
Loveland, Ohio – For pet lovers and others who find sudden and unexpected explosions alarming, there will be fireworks set off in downtown Loveland on Saturday evening, September, 11 at 9 PM.
Also, as a reminder for the same day, traffic in and out of downtown will be on a gridlock alert when a 5 PM parade leaves from the Loveland Elementary School, travels along West Loveland Avenue, and ends at 220 East Loveland Avenue at the Moose Lodge.

Ohio kids’ COVID-19 cases overtake other age groups

Ohioans 19 and younger are now driving the state’s COVID-19 pandemic, comprising a larger share of cases than any other age group.
Roughly one in three people who have contracted COVID-19 this month are 18 or younger, according to an analysis of state data. Those aged 20-29 are the next most prevalent cohort, comprising 16% of the month’s cases.
This comes as many schools struggle to remain open amid spiking infection and quarantine rates of students, and children’s hospitals raise the alarm about strained capacity.
At Akron Children’s Hospital, roughly 12-15 kids are being hospitalized with COVID-19 per day, according to remarks from hospital CEO Grace Wakulchik at a press briefing by members of Ohio’s children’s hospitals. At Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, 26 kids are hospitalized with the disease. Nine are in intensive care, including five on ventilators.
Several children’s hospital administrators warned Tuesday of increasingly fatigued staff and crowded facilities.
“The delta variant is not only more contagious, it is impacting kids in a fundamentally higher level than we’ve seen to date,” said Nick Lashutka, CEO of the Ohio Children’s Hospital Association.
Through most of the pandemic to date, adults 20- to 29-years old have driven the bulk of the COVID-19 caseload. Cases in children began to overtake their elder counterparts in July. Infections in September are twice as prevalent now among Ohio children as those in their 20s and three times as high as those in their 50s.
The rising prevalence of cases in children is likely a reflection of a return to school, sometimes without masks depending on the school district. State officials have declined to impose any statewide mask mandate in schools. Additionally, children 12 and under are not yet eligible for vaccination.
“It’s really clear to us as pediatricians that the risk of not wearing a mask if you’re a child in school is much greater than the risk of wearing a mask,” said Dr. Patricia Manning-Courtney, the chief of staff at Cincinnati Children’s.
“For some reason, we’re prioritizing kids not wearing masks over kids not getting COVID.”
Data from the Ohio Hospital Association shows COVID-19 hospitalizations among Ohioans 17 and younger has increased 857% over the last eight weeks.
Alongside the kids, COVID-19 is surging in Ohio across all ages. More than 3,100 Ohioans are hospitalized with COVID-19, a rate not seen since January.
New case rates, positivity rates on tests, total test and other indicators reflect a case surge as well.
An analysis from Stat, a health news outlet, found Ohio ranks fourth among states in terms of how fast COVID-19 case rates are accelerating.
Ohio has the 13th lowest vaccination rate of any state in the nation, according to a tracker from The New York Times.
