    Loveland, Ohio – “I found out about this while at dinner at the Works on December 9th with my daughter and her family. Santa and Mrs. Claus had just visited the restaurant, to the absolute delight of my 5-year-old grandson”, said Kathryn Lorenz about finding out she would be Loveland’s 2019 Valentine Lady. “So when I heard a little commotion and saw some ladies wearing red, it just never occurred to me what was happening. Several Valentine Ladies and my son appeared at the table and gave me flowers and a balloon and just surprised me completely. My daughter did a really good job helping them surprise me.”

    Lorenz is the 33rd Valentine Lady. She has also served on the Loveland Board of Education for the past 26 years, 17 as president. She also serves on the board of directors for the Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Education. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati and a former member of the Governor’s Task Force Ohio.

    The photo album below is from Saturday, January 5 when the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance held a ceremony at the Loveland Kroger officially announcing that Lorenz was the 2019 Valentine Lady and Donna Treinen was the winner of the 2019 Valentine Card design competition.

    The Valentine Lady tradition goes back to 1971 when the Loveland Chamber of Commerce created a Valentine postmark. Doris Pfiester, chamber secretary at the time, mailed 1,000 Valentines for Loveland residents that had a special Loveland, Ohio postmark that year and was referred to as the “Valentine Lady” until a formal selection process began in the 1980s. Pfiester was named the very first Valentine Lady in 1992. Today, the Valentine Lady plays an important role in the Chamber’s signature Valentine program, which includes a card design competition, poetry, coloring contests, and visits to students in Pre-K through fourth-grade classrooms and nursing homes throughout the Loveland area. The Chamber re-mails thousands of cards they receive from around the world for people wanting their cards mailed from “Loveland” with the slogan, “There is nothing in the world so sweet as Love”. Chamber president in 1972, Dr. Roland Boike, coined the phrase, inspired by Samual Johnson.

In her nomination letter, Lundy wrote, “Kathy’s public, professional and private life all demonstrate her commitment to the community of Loveland.” Lundy pointed out Lorenz’s commitment to education saying, “Kathy believes in education from the ground up. She is active in the Ohio Conservation League and encourages and supports excursions and educational experiences for children. She has spent time in our elementary classrooms teaching French, worked with mentor programs, and coordinated the Basic French Program at UC.” Lundy is a former Loveland School teacher.

    “If you look at all the accomplished, dedicated women who have already been named Valentine Lady, anyone would be proud to be like them,” Lorenz told Loveland Magazine. “I am especially grateful for Sue Lundy, who nominated me and Pat Furterer, Kay Bolin, and Janis Fogle, who have offered many tips about my role already. All the Ladies have welcomed me warmly.”

    Lundy added, “She speaks openly, honestly and with pride of all we hope to offer children in our schools. Kathy loves her family and her community. It is evident in all she has achieved and continues to do. Her positive spirit would be a valuable addition to the Valentine Lady program.”

    Lorenz told Loveland Magazine she collects pictures of hearts occurring in nature and heart shaped rocks and hopes to show the children and adults of Loveland that, “We can find hearts in nature and express love every day, not just on Valentines Day.” 

    During the ceremony at Kroger, Bill Hounshell introduced former Valentine Ladies as Loveland Vice-Mayor Rob Weisgerber presented each with a bouquet of flowers.

    You are invited: Building Tiger Nation Community Meeting #2

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District is moving forward in its master planning process to determine the needs of the school buildings and facilities. All stakeholders in the Loveland community – parents, students, teachers, residents and businesses – are invited to attend Community Meeting #2 in the Loveland Intermediate/Middle School cafeteria (757 South Lebanon Road) on November 28, 6:30-8:30 PM.

    This is the second community meeting during the master plan assessment phase and will focus on the ability of the Loveland school buildings to accommodate the delivery of education as it compares to the stakeholder vision for the Tiger student experience and research related to 21stcentury learning. The first meeting, held in September with more than 100 community members in attendance, presented data from the physical building assessments completed over the summer.

    The purpose of the physical building assessments and educational facility evaluation conducted in 2018 is to provide data for decision-making regarding a master plan to be presented to the Loveland Board of Education in spring 2019. Community Meeting #3 is planned for January 23.

    Susanne Quigley is a longtime Tiger

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland Board of Education has hired Susanne Quigley as the district’s new Chief Information Officer. Quigley, lives in the Loveland community and has students in the district.

    Heather Higdon has been hired as the director of communications for Indian Hill.

    Quigley brings 20 years of communications experience to the role, most recently serving as a communications specialist for Frost Brown Todd LLC where she has worked since 2014. In addition to her work as a communications specialist, Quigley has also served as a marketing director, content director and editor, copyeditor, and translator. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and a master’s degree in international economics and international relations from Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.

    Quigley replaces Heather Higdon who is leaving the district to take a position as the director of communications for the Indian Hill Exempted Village School District.

    Loveland Board of Education recognizes My Voice, My Choice students

    The Loveland Board of Education recognized 23 students for creating a culture of kindness through the My Voice, My Choice campaign during the April 17 Business Meeting.

    Loveland, Ohio – On Tuesday, April 17 the Loveland City School Board saluted 23 students by formally recognizing them during their Business Meeting. It was for their “exemplary effort in helping create a culture of kindness as part of the district-wide My Voice, My Choice campaign.” Board members presented each student with a certificate and shirt, and thanked them for being leaders among their peers.

    “We are so proud of these students for stepping up to be leaders in and around their school,” said Loveland Superintendent Dr. Amy Crouse. “The My Voice, My Choice campaign is a meaningful program our district uses to help our Tigers grow socially and emotionally as they transition from building to building. It is part of our strategic plan to ensure Tiger Care for all of our students, which is one of our big three district goals, and we are proud to celebrate this moment of much deserved recognition with our Board of Education.”

    Loveland Board of Education begins search for permanent treasurer

    Application deadline May 25

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland Board of Education has officially launched the search for the permanent treasurer/chief financial officer (CFO) to lead the Loveland City School District. The Board will collect applications through May 25, with interviews set to begin June 4. The Board plans to have a new treasurer/CFO in place by August 1.

    “We are looking for an energetic professional who will maintain the high standard of ethics, honesty, and integrity our Loveland community expects,” said Loveland Board of Education President Art Jarvis. “I am confident our Board of Education will find the right person to lead our district in this capacity.”

    In January, Loveland Treasurer/CFO Brett Griffith announced his intent to take retirement for medical reasons; the Board of Education named Terrah Floyd as interim treasurer at that time. In addition to assisting the Loveland City School District as needed in the interim capacity, Floyd also currently works as the treasurer/CFO of the Springboro School District where she has served since 2013.

    Loveland Board of Education moves to begin community engagement around new facilities

    Emersion Design to serve as the Master Planning Architects; District engages Task Force to provide input

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland City School District will begin a year-long process of community engagement under the management of Emersion Design – a master planning architecture firm that will serve the district in the capacity of community engagement around the assessment of current facilities and future facility needs. The Loveland Board of Education approved the contract with Emersion Design at the March 20 Board Business Meeting.

    “We look forward to engaging the school community and the community at large to understand the future expectations of the district and how those expectations can be provided,” said Loveland Business Manager John Ames, who worked directly with the Board Facilities Committee on the selection of the firm.

    The master planning process will work in three phases:

    Phase One: Assessment (Research & Analysis)

    • Assessment of the condition of all six buildings
    • Evaluation of enrollment trends and the effect of the trends on the district
    • Analysis of how the current facilities meet the needs of 21st century education methodologies
    • Community engagement to provide an overview of the findings of the assessment phase

    Phase Two: Translation (Interpretation of Needs)

    • Evaluation of feedback from Phase One community engagement
    • Exploration of educational trends to identify how these trends can influence facilities
    • Development of options with cost implications
    • Community engagement to present options and solicit feedback
    • Revise options based upon feedback
    • Community engagement to present final options and solicit feedback
    • Evaluation to determine if additional refining is needed

    Phase Three: Master Plan Delivery

    • Provide Final Master Facilities Plan containing rendered floor plans of chosen option(s)
    • Rendered site plans of chosen option(s)
    • Budget
    • Phasing

    Additionally, under the leadership of Loveland Superintendent Dr. Amy Crouse, the district has engaged a task force comprised of administrators, staff, students, parents, and business and community leaders to work with the master planning firm to help advance the goals of the district.

    “Strong schools – strong communities; we believe in this connection and we intend to build the future together,” said Dr. Crouse. “This is the work driven by our Loveland Board of Education that partners the district with our Loveland community in ensuring we support each other in this initiative.”

    The task force is led by a steering committee that will meet every two weeks to make sure the group is hitting target dates that will be defined in conjunction with Emersion Design, with three additional committees to focus on the student experience, facilities and finance.

    “Everyone will work both separately and also together,” explained Dr. Crouse. “We must ensure that the needs for our student experience match the plans we make for our future facility improvements and that we can fund the projects that we want. Every committee is important; every member is valued – and any Loveland resident who would like to be involved is invited to contact me to join us on this exciting journey.”

    Loveland Board of Education to hold special meeting for superintendent selection Thursday

    Loveland, Ohio – The Loveland Board of Education plans to hold a special meeting at 6 PM Thursday, March 15, at the Loveland Intermediate School Media Center for the purpose of nominating and selecting the new superintendent of the Loveland City School District. In February, the Board announced three finalists for the position who each met with the administrative team, staff, and with the Loveland community.

    The new superintendent’s official duties will begin August 1. The vacancy is the result of the resignation of Chad Hilliker that was effective on July 31, 2017. At that time, Dr. Amy Crouse took over as interim superintendent for the district, and she continues to lead in that capacity.

    Loveland Schools names Brian Conatser interim athletic director

    Brian Conatser has served the district in the role of assistant director of student athletics since 2016

    Additionally, the Board of Education approved Jake Elfers, a 2014 Loveland graduate, to work with Conatser as an assistant athletic director student intern.

    Loveland, Ohio – During the February 20, Business Meeting the Loveland Board of Education approved in a unanimous vote to name Brian Conatser as interim district director of student athletics for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year. This follows the announcement that District Director of Student Athletics Julie Renner accepted a position outside education with FinalForms, a national athletic management solution company.

    “We have full confidence in Mr. Conatser’s ability to manage the robust Loveland athletic program that is so well known in the ECC,” said Loveland High School Principal Peggy Johnson. “We appreciate Mr. Conatser stepping forward to serve in this interim capacity for the remainder of the school year.”

    Conatser has served the district in the role of assistant director of student athletics since 2016. He has a Bachelor of Education in Health Promotion from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Education in Secondary Education from Xavier University, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from American College of Education.

    Additionally, the Board of Education approved Jake Elfers, a 2014 Loveland graduate, to work with Conatser as an assistant athletic director student intern. Elfers is finishing his degree this spring at the University of Cincinnati in Sports Management.

    Renner’s final day will be March 2, and Conatser will assume the director responsibilities effective that date.

    There is nothing quite like at the end of a long day coming home to hug my three kiddos. Following the horrific unfolding of the February 14 fatal high school shooting in Florida – those hugs were a bit tighter at my house, as I’m sure they were in yours. We love our children – all of them, and we want nothing but the best for them, and at the Loveland City School District – that starts with safety.

    Today, all of our buildings reviewed safety procedures.

    Today, all of our buildings emailed parents to let them know who to call with questions.

    Today, the Loveland Police Department provided increased presence at our buildings.

    “But, I’m sure in your mind you ask: What about tomorrow? And, the day after that… and the day after that.”

    What I will tell you is that Tiger Safety is always on our minds as administrators, teachers, staff – and with the full support of our Loveland Board of Education. It is always evolving, always improving, and often reviewed by our District Safety Committee. We have pulled together a comprehensive resource for our Tiger families to dive a little deeper into how we are trained and the resources we have to keep our district safe. 

    “And, as always, we encourage you to speak up if you see something. Tell a teacher, tell a principal – call me. Let someone know if something seems wrong.”
    It’s what we can articulate to you on a day where many of us find ourselves at a loss for words.
