    Loveland, Ohio – Greetings and welcome to summer 2023. Year 13 of the Captain Seth Mitchell Hero 5K is in the books and in many ways, it was a record year.  Donations and race participation were near record highs.

    The Scholarship team recognizes how many opportunities you have to donate to worthy causes and truly appreciates you being a partner with us whether it’s your first year or year 13.

    Steve Mitchell, father of Seth says, “Connie, Drew, and I and the scholarship committee are blessed by your support. For 2023 your support helped to provide three $5,000.00 scholarships and four  $250.00 gifts to deserving students.”

    The date and time for the 14th Annual Captain Seth Mitchell Hero 5k is Saturday, October 14, at 10 AM. Due to city construction, the race will not be in Nisbet Park. The 5K will launch from the Linda Cox Trailside Parking Lot.

    The Carolina Beach version will be Saturday, October 21, at 9 AM starting at Green Turtle Lane in Wilmington North Carolina the home of Connie and Steve Mitchell.

    You can also join us virtually, anywhere from around the world, to honor and celebrate Seth during the month of October. The virtual run can be done anytime, anywhere.

    Meet the recipients of the 2023 scholarships

    The Let Us Never Forget/Mitchell Family Scholarship is funded by the Mitchells, the Yellow Ribbon Support Group of Cincinnati, and the Hero 5K run. The scholarship is for $5,000.00.

    The 2023 recipient reminded us of Seth in so many ways.  The recipient has a high-level work ethic, and is polite, and respectful and is loyal and selfless.  Seth Mitchell was often described as having these characteristics.  One letter of recommendation described the recipient as “a lot like Seth, because he is a stand-up guy that does the right thing.” Much like Seth this recipient has faced adversity in life and had to work to overcome and persevere in the presence of obstacles.

    We are very proud to award the Let Us Never Forget Seth Mitchell/Mitchell Family scholarship to Alex Saletta.

    The Seth Mitchell Memorial Scholarships are funded by individual donations and the proceeds of the annual Captain Seth Mitchell Hero 5K. The Mitchell family is especially thankful to all the participants, the City of Loveland, The Loveland Schools Foundation, the Carolina Beach NC participants, and to those of you that donate to this worthy cause.

    The first recipient of the Seth Mitchell Memorial Scholarship has overcome medical challenges early on in life, and became stronger and more determined to make the most of every day. Her story reminded us of Seth overcoming his own failings in school to later become LHS Class President in 1997 and later a Cobra Helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps. Life’s obstacles will always be there. This recipient and Seth did not let those stand in their way.

    One letter of recommendation for this candidate said: those around this candidate are “inspired” by the recipient’s kindness and amiability.  Those words were often used about Seth. Lastly, one supporter of this recipient said, “I am guessing that if she went to high school with Captain Mitchell, they would have a lot in common and would have been friends.”

    We believe that also and are proud to award a scholarship to Allison “Ally” Ginder.

    The second recipient of the Seth Mitchell Memorial Scholarship also exemplifies many of the qualities and characteristics associated with Seth.  In this recipient’s introductory video, the candidate said, Seth exhibited the epitome of “selflessness” was “inspiring” and that there should be “more people like him.”  We believe that’s exactly who this recipient is too.  The recipient is known to be deeply loyal to friends at school and her family.  One letter of recommendation described the recipient as a “quiet leader” and that “school is not something that comes easy”, but this person “pushes herself and does not take the easy road.”  The recommendation also said, “she’s growing up faster than she should” due to obstacles in life.  The recipient has a strong academic and extracurricular record.  Her work ethic and ability to overcome obstacles is inspiring to us.  We are proud to award a Seth Mitchell Memorial Scholarship to Skylar Lundeen.

    Seth Mitchell, a captain and pilot in the United States Marine Corps and a 1997 Loveland High School graduate, was killed in action in Afghanistan in October 2009.  Seth contributed greatly to the Loveland community in his youth… he served as a leader and role model on the varsity football team, was voted to be Class President his senior year, and was named “Mr. Personality” by his peers.  He was well loved here.  After graduating, he took that same sense of service and loyalty into all that he did: as a son, a brother, a friend, a leader in the Marines.

    In other words, Seth was a hero for all.

    We are a group of Seth Mitchell’s high school classmates, who miss our friend and want to keep his memory alive.  We represent the many people who Seth made an impression on with his sense of humor, kind heart, and loyal friendship.  As we organize this 5k Race and the scholarship memorial fund, we are motivated by one enduring inspiration: to live each day a little more honorably, kindly, and humbly… just like Seth.

    School Board calls special meeting to rescind appointment of new member

    Loveland, Ohio – In a special meeting on July 17, the Loveland City School District voted to appoint Dr. Brad Goldie to fill the unexpired term of  Kevin Daugherty. According to a news release by the District on Monday, the Board will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, July 26th, at 5 PM to rescind the appointment because the front door of the building was locked to the public.

    For background: School Board appoints Dr. Brad Goldie to vacant position.

    The new special meeting will be held in the LIS/LMS Media Center at 757 South Lebanon Road. Hearing from the public will not be included in the agenda for this meeting.

    The recommended action on the agenda for the meeting is only to “rescind its appointment of a candidate to the vacant Board seat.” Nothing in the communications revel when the Board might again vote to make an appointment to the vacant seat. Daugherty’s resignation was effective, June 30th.

    The Loveland City School District Board of Education held a Special Meeting on July 17, 2023, to fill a vacancy on the Board. After interviewing all interested candidates, the Board voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Brad Goldie.

    All public portions of the July 17 Special Meeting were recorded and are available to view on the Board’s YouTube page. Due to an oversight, the front door of the building was not unlocked to allow public access. Because of this procedural error, I have called a Special Meeting of the Loveland Board of Education for this Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at 5 pm in the Media Center of the Loveland Intermediate School.

    During this week’s Special Meeting, the Board will consider a motion to rescind the action taken during the July 17 Meeting. I will be bringing forward this motion in the interest of transparency and following proper procedure – it is no reflection on Dr. Goldie or any of the candidates who indicated an interest in the Board vacancy. I want to thank Dr. Goldie for his interest and willingness to serve.

    Loveland, Ohio – Due to the resignation of board member Kevin Daugherty, the Loveland Board of Education met on 17 June to fill his seat for the remainder of his term, which is through the end of the current calendar year, December 31, 2023.

    The Board entered into an executive session to conduct phone interviews with the following candidates:

    After the executive session ended, Board President Dr. Kathryn Lorenz said that instead of choosing a candidate who said they would run for election in November, they chose a candidate who indicated they would not be seeking a permanent seat on the Board.

    Lorenz, Rev. Jonathan Eilert, Dr. Eric Schwetschenau, and Eileen Washburn voted to appoint Dr. Brad Goldie to the vacant position.

    Goldie is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Miami University and serves on the District Finance Committee.

    Loveland, Ohio – On July 14, 2023 as the sun was about to set a mom and dad taxi stand, a granite, laser-engraved bench was dedicated at the lower entrance to the Loveland High School outdoor athletic complex. The family of Josh Carrington wanted to honor his all-too-brief life and thank the School District for the myriad ways he was nurtured while he attended Loveland High School.

    Family brainstorming led to the vision of a commemorative bench that would give athletes a place to sit in the shade while waiting for a ride home after practice or competition.

    In this LOVELAND MAGAZINE TV video, you can watch the dedication ceremony and listen to fond memories of Josh from family members. A former Tiger classmate, a teammate of Josh is interviewed. Amy Van Strien, a former District psychologist talked about how involved Josh was in helping her with her programming. There was rock painting, the release of paper balloons, and many hugs.

    The painted rocks will be placed beneath the tree next to the Angles by the Trail mural in downtown Loveland.

    Josh graduated from Loveland High School with the class of 2010. Over those four years, Josh participated in football, track (pole vaulting), and wrestling. He was nicknamed “Josh the Spladle” for his wrestling moves.

    Josh was also on the Homecoming Court his Senior Year. Josh passed in 2015.

    Loveland, Ohio – The LIFE Food Pantry says that it is time for us to start packing school bags for the 2023-24 school year. It is thanks to supporters like you that our students will be able to go back to school with everything they need.

     

    Like in previous years, students registered at the pantry will receive a backpack filled with grade appropriate supplies, socks and underwear, a Spirit Wear shirt, shoes, and personal care items (toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, etc.). The distribution will be during the first two weeks of August.

    Are you willing to help us?

    We are expecting at least 160 students to receive supplies this year. We are still seeing many new clients, so the number might be higher. Last year we planned for 120 and distributed 150 bags and supplies!

    We are looking for our generous donors to help us by donating backpacks with supplies (with a list of supplies provided), individual school supplies or personal care items.

    We will need donations by July 20th. They may be dropped off at the LIFE Food Pantry at 541 Loveland Madeira Road, Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 – noon; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 3:30 – 6:30, or by appointment.

    Loveland, Ohio – Loveland City School District Board member Kevin Dougherty submitted his resignation at Last night’s meeting.

    In this video, you can watch Dougherty announce his decision, and the reaction of Board members and administrators to the announcement.

    Board President, Kathy Lorenz also explains the policy for finding a replacement and appointment to fill Dougherty’s unexpired term.

    Dougherty was appointed to the Board in May 2020 for a term that expires at the end of this year.

    A public announcement will be forthcoming about how to apply for the remainder of Dougherty’s term in office.

    DA NANG, VIETNAM – As the USS Antietam arrived in Da Nang, Vietnam, Loveland H. S. grad Alex Marcero was at the at helm. Marcero is 2020 graduate of Loveland High School.

    The Antietam is attached to Commander, Task Force 70/ Carrier Strike Group 5 is conducting operations in the Indo-Pacific.

    In May 2022, the Antietam was homeported at Yokosuka, Japan. She was part of Carrier Strike Group 5 led by USS Ronald Reagan.

    89 acres of Grailville could become dedicated green space in perpetuity

    Loveland, Ohio – On Tuesday, City Council will be asked to support a grant application that will be submitted by the Cardinal Land Conservancy to the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, for funding to purchase 89 acres of the remaining Grail property that is within the city’s corporation boundaries.

    This is the site where Drees Homes was denied the zoning change they requested in 2022 after local residents filled Planning and Zoning chambers to urge that the site be protected. The Kentucky home builder had requested the land become a Special Planning District which could have allowed 209 homes on the site. The same parcel is also where the Loveland City School District proposed building a campus until the funding they wanted was denied by voters in 2019.

    The site is bounded by O’Bannonville Road and State Route 48 (Oakland Road).

    After the re-zoning Drees requested was denied, local Grail members and other local residents coalesced to find the solution that will be presented to City Council on Tuesday.

    If acquired by the conservancy, the 89 acres of land would be deeded as dedicated green space in perpetuity. The proposed purchase by the conservancy would be adjacent to the 100-acre Clermont County Park District property, which was also acquired from the Grail using Clean Ohio funding.

    The Conservancy is proposing to portion off the area surrounding the existing structures to allow them to be renovated and utilized for their offices and community meeting space.

    Cardinal Conservancy and the Grail will be notified if the application is successfully funded sometime this fall, according to City Manager Dave Kennedy in a memo to Council. The resolution requires no financial contribution from the city.

Cardinal acquires conservation interests in real properties which it then monitors and stewards in perpetuity. These include conservation easements, fee simple title, and other conservation interests which are acquired through donations and purchases guided by, and executed through, Cardinal. Once obtained, Cardinal monitors and otherwise stewards the properties and interests through regular oversight, periodic assessment and, if needed, protective action and legal defense. Our service area includes the Southwestern Ohio counties: Adams, Brown, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton, Highland, and Warren.

    Rinsky Woods Nature Preserve

    Clermont County

    There are few woods like this in the world. Those woods that exist are found only in Southwest Ohio and Southeast Indiana. Rinksy Woods is the second largest woods of this kind in the world. In fact, it has been designated as an Ohio Natural Landmark by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. These wet flat woods are adjacent to Stonelick State Park, adding to an admirable stretch of greenspace in the area. Details & Trail Map

    Todd’s Fork Nature Preserve

    Clinton County

    Native prairies give way to a 100+ acre woods on this preserve, which also includes the Todd’s Fork of the Little Miami River. Cardinal has several stewardship projects ongoing here including maintenance of the prairie. Maintenance includes prescribed burning which is meant to discourage unwanted invasive plants on an annual basis. Details & Trail Map

    Kope Hollow Nature Preserve

    Brown County

    In Southeast Brown County, the Kope formation (a bedrock formation unique to Southern Ohio and Indiana) runs through incredibly diverse woods. A recent native plant survey listed over 100 native species. This property is also graced with five waterfalls that contribute to Roup’s Run. This water flows into the Ohio River just beyond the bounds of the property. Details & Trail Map

    Bortz Family Nature Preserve

    Hamilton County

    This 119-acre preserve offers respite in deep and cool woods along with views of the wide Ohio and of the Little Miami’s emerald shores. This land appeals to both humans and wildlife because of its diversity. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources determined that this land is likely the home of the endangered Indiana Bat and several endangered species of mussels. Overlooking the confluence of these two great rivers is an American Bald Eagle nest, atop a towering cottonwood tree. Our eagles can be viewed by our Eagle Camera from January to June!     Loveland City Schools Seeking New Early Childhood Center Principal

    Loveland, Ohio –  The Loveland City School District is beginning the search for the next great leader of the Loveland Early Childhood Center. Current principal Sara Gehring is leaving the district for a new position in Madeira City Schools.

    Gehring joined Loveland City School District in 2018 as assistant principal of Loveland Middle School before taking the position of principal of Loveland Early Childhood Center in 2021. She will join Madeira City School District as the assistant principal of Madeira Elementary.

    “These last two years have been some of the best of my career, and the LECC team is a special and strong group of educators who rise up each day to do what is best for kids. This is a bittersweet moment because I’ll miss Loveland, yet I’m excited to become the assistant principal of Madeira Elementary,” Sara Gehring said.

    The search will begin immediately. The campus is home to Loveland’s preschool and kindergarten programs.

    “Table of Discussions” Brings Prevention, Healing, and Hope for Mental Health Awareness Month

    Loveland, Ohio – “Don’t be afraid to put yourself first sometimes and get the help you need if it’s needed,” mental health advocate, Elly Steinbrunner said when asked what encouraging message, she wanted to send to those struggling with their mental health.

    On my latest episode of “Table of Discussions” I invited Gina Marek, creator of the Fave Five App, Tori Morrison, who started a non-profit called the Ben Morrison Memorial Fund, and Elly Steinbrunner, a former member of the Loveland Hope Squad to my table to talk about Mental Health Awareness Month.

    During the episode, Gina and Tori talk about how losing their sons to suicide encouraged them to advocate and educate those in the community about mental health. In this Loveland Magazine TV interview, both Gina and Tori offers advice about suicide prevention, eliminating the stigma of depression, and mental illness. Since the conception of the Fave Five app and the Ben Morrison Memorial Fund, Gina and Tori have been able to provide a wealth of information for parents, caregivers, and peers.

    Elly, who recently graduated from Loveland High School, shared her perspective on why mental health struggles are climbing so rapidly among her generation and how being a member of the Loveland High School Hope Squad allowed her to not only help so many young people, but also educate her peers about mental health.

    Loveland Hope Squad

    The HOPE Squad program is a school-based peer support team that partners with local mental health agencies. Peers select students who are trustworthy and caring individuals to join the Hope Squad. Squad members are trained to watch for at-risk students, provide friendship, identify suicide-warning signs, and seek help from adults.

    HOPE Squad members are NOT taught to act as counselors but are educated on recognizing suicide warning signs and how to properly and respectfully report concerns to an adult. Once invited to be a HOPE Squad member, students must get a permission form signed by their parents and go through training.

    Hope Squads seek to reduce self-destructive behavior and youth suicide by training, building, and creating change in schools and communities.

    Objectives:

    Train:

    1. Hope Squads will train students and staff in schools to recognize suicide-warning signs and act upon those warnings to break the code of silence.

    2. Hope Squads will train students and staff to identify adolescents with undetected, untreated, or emerging mental disorders.

    Build:

    1. Hope Squads will build positive relationships among peers and faculty in schools to facilitate acceptance for students seeking help.

    2. Hope Squads will build strong relationships with local mental health agencies and communities while educating students, parents, and school staff about available community mental health resources.

    Change:

    1. Hope Squads will work to change the school culture regarding suicide by reducing stigmas about suicide and mental health.

    2. Hope Squads will work to change community perceptions of mental health by creating awareness about suicide and the tools available to prevent suicide.
