    Yellow Springs breaks ground for medical marijuana facility

    Yellow Springs, Ohio – With Ohio licenses announced just two weeks ago, Cresco Labs was the first to break ground and start construction on their Yellow Springs medical marijuana cultivation facility. Cresco said they will develop a 50,000-square foot “environmentally-sound” (nearly 85% renewable energy) greenhouse that will grow and harvest condition-specific strains of medical marijuana and produce non-invasive medical products for qualified patients.

    With over 100 applications submitted to earn one of the 12 coveted Marijuana Cultivation licenses in Ohio, Cresco Labs was awarded one by the Ohio Department of Commerce. Cresco’s successful application outlined an operational and regulatory compliance plan as well as a community support program offering scholarships and local financial incentives. Cresco Labs has successfully secured merit-based licenses in Illinois and Pennsylvania.

    “We are thrilled to be selected as a provider in this program and look forward to providing medical relief to patients across Ohio,” said Charlie Bachtell, Cresco’s CEO. “We plan to be the state leader in this industry by manufacturing the highest quality product, providing caring service to the patients and giving back to our home community,” he added.

    “After visiting their facilities in Illinois and meeting their team members, we knew that Cresco would mesh well with the values of the community,” said Yellow Springs Village President Karen Wintrow. “We look forward to working with Cresco as they build and staff their new facility and know they will be a valued contributor to the quality of life in Yellow Springs with jobs, tax revenues and community support.”

    Cresco Labs has also applied for a dispensary license and will apply for a processing license which, through extraction methods, will produce pharmaceutical-grade oral sprays, sublingual digestible tablets, transdermal patches and other forms of cannabis (CBD) oil available for sale to provide users with a consistent, controlled dosage. Cresco’s brand name products will be available at dispensaries across Ohio to patients that have been physician-certified with any of the 22 approved medical conditions.

    “Medical cannabis is a great fit for Yellow Springs as it combines our local strengths and values of agriculture, wellness and a progressive approach to medicine,” said Wintrow.

    Construction on Cresco’s 50,000+ square foot cultivation facility in Yellow Springs will begin immediately as their site plans and zoning have been pre-approved.

    Flu activity in Ohio elevated to “Widespread”

     

    New Flu-Associated Hospitalizations Continue to Trend Above Five-Year Average

    • The Ohio Department of Health issued a news release on Dec. 8 about rising flu activity, and the geographic spread being elevated to “regional.” 
    • Flu activity in Ohio has now been elevated to “widespread,” the highest level. During last year’s flu season, flu activity in Ohio didn’t reach “widespread” geographic spread until mid-January.
      • During the week ending Dec. 9 (most recent data available), there were 144 new flu-associated hospitalizations in Ohio, compared to 92 the week prior, and 29 during the same week last year. So far this flu season, there have been 401 flu-associated hospitalizations.
    • New flu-associated hospitalizations continue to trend above the five-year average (see below).
    • The Ohio Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone six months and older get a flu shot as soon as possible.  It is not too late to get a flu shot. Vaccination is the best protection against seasonable flu viruses.

    LIS students put #TigerCare in action to raise more than $7,000 to build a well in South Sudan

    Loveland Intermediate School students walked 1.2 miles carrying gallon jugs of water and raised more than $7,000 to combat the water crisis in Africa during a special lesson Friday, Oct. 20.

    A ‘Long Walk’ to learn empathy

    Loveland, Ohio – Loveland Intermediate School (LIS) sixth grade students walking the sidewalks of Loveland neighborhoods with gallon jugs of water in tow; it was not your typical classroom experience Friday, Oct. 20 – but it was a learning opportunity now in its fourth year. Called “Walk for Water” the students read the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, which is based on a true story about the difficulty to obtain clean water in Africa. The 1.2 miles the students walk – again, gallon jugs of water in tow – is symbolic; they carry the water to represent the very real water crisis in Africa.

    “I continue this lesson each year because I think it is important to teach our students that there are many people in the world who struggle to survive each day and that we should always be grateful for what we have,” said LIS English Teacher Jennifer Kirby.

    In addition to the walk, students raised $7382.06 to help build a well in South Sudan, surpassing the goal of $6,000. Students also donated about 400 gallons of water to Matthew 25: Ministries.

    “Each year I continue to be amazed that our students take the main character, Salva’s, story to heart and go above and beyond the goal that we set,” said Kirby. “I hope that the take away for the students is that one person can make a difference. I hope they think of the children of the village where our well will be built and know that they have made the lives of those children and their families so much better.”

    Tiger Family helps to ‘Pass-it-On’ during annual food drive

    Loveland, Ohio – A Holiday Box with all of the fixings – decorative holiday napkins included – with enough food to serve families for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah. That was the gift to more than 200 Loveland families thanks to a community pulling together, and a 17-year partnership between the Loveland City School District and Loveland L.I.F.E. Pantry. The Tiger Family donated nearly 8,000 items during the November Pass-it-On donation drive.

    “Thanks to the enormous efforts of our team working with the school – the teachers and students, parents, and police officers, the L.I.F.E. Pantry was able to serve 207 area families,” said L.I.F.E. Pantry Director Linda Bergholz. “The blessings of this community are abundant, and we are both humbled and grateful for the outpouring of our school community.”

    Families picked up the Holiday Boxes from the pantry on Saturday, Nov. 18. The pantry provided families with additional fresh items, some donated from area businesses, as well as gift certificates for the main course for the two meals. This year, the pantry also provided recipe cards for each family so they could make traditional holiday foods, like green bean casserole, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, and even hot cocoa with marshmallows, too – and clients could taste-test the delicious recipes at box pick-up.  

    “Our Preschool through fourth graders collected over 2,500 items towards making winter holiday meal baskets for families right here in our own district,” said Stacy Fitzgibbon, LEPTA Pass-it-On chairperson.

    “For the 17th year, Pass-it-On has been a great partnership between Loveland Schools and L.I.F.E. Food Pantry,” said Lauren Aiello, M/INT Pass-it-On Chairperson. “The fifth through eighth grades at Loveland Intermediate School and Loveland Middle School collected over 5,200 items toward the holiday baskets. That is twice what was requested! Loveland’s generosity to its neighbors is inspiring, and shows just one aspect of our wonderful community. We couldn’t do any of this without the families taking part, teachers supporting our efforts, and the volunteers who help pull all of this together.”

    Loveland, Ohio – A few cans of paint and a holiday weekend spent working was all a group of Loveland Intermediate School (LIS) fifth grade teachers needed to create some unexpected messages for the female students they teach. When their students returned from Veteran’s Day Weekend, they were greeted with inspirational quotes painted across all of the walls in the bathroom.

    “We saw a post online about a middle school that did this exact thing, and we loved the idea because so often girls are bombarded with society’s views about what they should look like and what society believes about girls,” said LIS Teacher Jennifer Burkhardt. “We wanted to surround them with words to remind them that they are beautiful, strong, smart, and loved just the way they are and that being kind and doing their best is the most important thing.”

    It was an act of kindness by a Loveland nonprofit that funded the plan. JUST BECAUSE GRANTS were awarded to the teachers to purchase the supplies.

    “It is fantastic, and the message is so important for our students to hear,” said LIS Principal Garth Carlier. “This initiative speaks to the care our teachers have for our students, which is also one of the strategic goals for our district – Tiger Care. These students deserve to know how special they are; this is the perfect daily reminder.”

    Loveland City School District Snow Delay Information

    Loveland, Ohio – This is a reminder to the Tiger Family that the Loveland City School District operates on a two-hour delay schedule for weather-related delay days. This means all buildings will begin classes on a two-hour delay from regular start times, and all buses will run on a two-hour delay to pick up students.
    On weather delay days, Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) will enact the following schedule:
     
    AM Kindergarten = 11:10-12:50
    PM Kindergarten = 2:10 -3:50
    All Day Kindergarten & First grade = 11:10-3:50
     
    LECC will communicate a bus schedule directly for morning Kindergarten home drop off and the afternoon Kindergarten home pickup.
     
    Please note: For buildings currently offering breakfast, this will not be available on any snow delay days.
     
    The Tiger Family will be notified about weather-related delays and closing through the district’s School Alerts system, the district website, on the district social media sites, which all members of the Tiger Family are encouraged to follow: Facebook (Loveland City Schools), Twitter (@lovelandtigers), Loveland Magazine and through other traditional media outlets.

    Mike’s Carwash donates $20,000 to Toys for Tots

    Loveland, Ohio — Mike’s Carwash, with headquarters located in the Loveland Commerce Park, donated $20,173.39 to Toys for Tots as a result of its Wash for Tots fundraiser on Saturday, Dec. 2nd, according to a press release.

    During the one-day fundraiser, Mike’s 22 locations offered the Ultimate Wash at a discounted price and for every Ultimate purchased, donated $1 back to the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program, the release continued; all locations were also accepting monetary donations.

    Toys for Tots’ mission is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and to distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community, the release stated.

    “A huge thank you to all the customers that supported our Wash for Tots fundraiser and to the civilians and Marines that volunteered at our locations during the event,” said Mike Dahm, president of Mike’s Carwash. “We are thrilled to have raised $20,173.39 for Toys for Tots that will support eight local chapters in gifting toys to less fortunate children this holiday season.”

    Loveland, Ohio – Loveland Middle School (LMS) L3 (Loveland Lego Legends), a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Team, recently earned a new title: First Place Robot Design. Students won the award at the FLL Tournament hosted by Sycamore Saturday, December 2. The L3 team, which includes two out-of-district students, will join four other teams from the tournament to advance to the District Tournament at iSpace on January 20.
     
     
    “We are extremely proud of our robotics students!” said LMS Principal Chuck Ogdan. “ALL of these students are strong Tigers who embody the Loveland Middle School four-core values: Grit, Rise, Innovation, and Leadership. We wish them the very best as they move forward to the district tournament. Go Tigers!”

    Dear Loveland Community and Tiger Nation, 

    We want to make you aware of the plans in place to honor our outstanding State Champion Lady Tigers Soccer Team. The student-athletes and their coaches have requested to conduct a Champions Tour through our school district and community on Friday, Dec. 8. Loveland police and fire officials will be escorting the team during this tour, which includes the following stops:

    ·         8:30 – 8:45 a.m. – Loveland Elementary School

    ·         8:45 – 9 a.m. – Loveland Primary School

    ·         9:15 – 9:30 a.m. – Loveland Early Childhood Center

    ·         9:45 – 10 a.m. – Loveland Middle School

    ·         10:15 – 11 a.m. – Loveland Board Office

    ·         11 – 11:15 a.m. – Loveland Intermediate School

    ·         2 – 2:20 p.m. – Loveland High School (There will be a video shown in the gym which highlights the season and the journey.)

    Please feel free to join us at any of the stops we are making along the tour. 

    The team made the decision to proceed in this fashion because they want an opportunity to thank Tiger Nation for supporting and cheering for them during this amazing state run, and the two dates proposed for a community parade were in direct conflict with plans the girls had that could not be rearranged.

    Additionally, the Loveland Board of Education will recognize the State Champion Lady Tigers Soccer Team at the 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, Board Business Meeting held at the Loveland Intermediate School Media Center. All members of the Tiger Family are invited to attend this event.

    Symmes Township is recognizing the winning team 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at a Township meeting. Tuesday, Jan. 9, Loveland City Council will honor the team at the scheduled city council meeting, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, Miami Township has also invited the team to join them at one of their business meetings.  

    The Loveland Athletic Department will induct the entire 2017 Lady Tigers Soccer Team into our Loveland High School Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime of our Tiger basketball games vs. Kings Friday, Dec. 15.

    Finally, our Loveland Athletic Boosters are generously going to purchase State Championship rings for our student-athletes and coaches. When the rings come in, we will organize a public ring ceremony event, where all are welcome.

    We are so proud of the Lady Tigers Soccer Team accomplishments and all they have achieved. Please help us celebrate their success at one of the above events, and for the events currently unscheduled, please look for additional details to come.
