Loveland, OhioLynn Oury, The 2025 Loveland Valentine Lady, visited my 1st-grade classroom on February 27th. The Valentine Lady visit is always exciting and something that my students look forward to. My students love meeting someone from their Loveland Community and why Valentine’s Day is so special in Loveland. This year proved no different and perhaps was a little more anticipated as Lynn is also known as Miss Lynn, the preschool teacher!

I have known Lynn for about twenty years. I have known her as a beloved colleague and as a mom when my own daughter had her for two years in preschool almost seventeen years ago. To say that I was excited about this year’s Valentine Lady was an understatement. I knew Lynn’s visit to my classroom would be an experience that my students wouldn’t forget and I was right.

Miss Lynn came to our classroom that morning dressed the part in a cheery Valentine sweater and she also had some props. She talked

The wooden heart that Miss Lynn gave us now hangs in my classroom. It was made by Lynn’s husband Neal.

about Loveland, friendships and caring for one another. She captured our attention as she retold a chapter from Frog and Toad are Friends. She taught us some sign language as she told the story and also used several buttons as props as she retold the endearing story of Toad looking for his button with Frog.

She ended her time with us by presenting us with a wooden heart ornament that her husband had made for us. It now hangs in our classroom as a reminder to be kind to one another. She stamped a special Valentine for each of us to either keep or to give to someone special.

Miss Lynn with two of her former students, Oliver and Hunter.

We said our goodbyes and took a few photos with Miss Lynn before she was on her way to another classroom. Hunter and Oliver had a special picture taken with her as they were members of her last preschool school class before she retired.

At the time of Lynn’s visit, my students were learning to write a report. We spent the next few weeks writing about The Valentine’s Lady visit to our classroom. We collected our information, made a plan for our writing and then wrote our reports. Below is our collective report.

Miss Lynn returned to our classroom on April 11th. We surprised her with our reports and this story. She got to click the Loveland Magazine “Publish” button!

Below are pictures of our time together and our favorite pages from our reports.

Loveland, Ohio – Rosalynne Patricia “Pat” Furterer, founder of the Loveland Stage Company passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the age of 90.

Furterer was born in Chester, Pennsylvania and married Fred Furterer on February 13, 1954. Fred Furterer passed away in 2009. The couple lived in Pennsylvania and Michigan before Fred was transferred to Cincinnati in 1977. The couple settled in Pheasant Hills in Loveland.

Pat was a leader in community theater in Battle Creek, Michigan.

In 1979, when Pat realized that there was no community theater in Loveland, she ran an ad in the local paper seeking people who might be interested in starting one and gathered a group of eleven people who were interested in live theater, at her home in the Pheasant Hills subdivision. She continued in many roles with the theater company, as a performer, educator, fundraiser, set designer, Director, and mentor for 50-years.

To honor her legacy as the leader of the volunteer Board of Directors, she was named President Emeritus of the Loveland Stage Company in 2013.

  • Interview with Becky Giver the 2024 Loveland Ohio Valentine Lady

Interview with Becky Giver the 2024 Loveland Ohio Valentine Lady

    by David Miller

Loveland, Ohio – Saturday morning the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance gathered a standing-room crowd at City Hall to introduce Becky Giver as the next Loveland Valentine Lady and unveil the 2024 Valentine card designed by artist Lauren Connolly.

Before the ceremony started, Becky talked to me about how it felt when she was surprised and told of her selection and what are her plans during her reign.

You can view Connolly’s winning design as the cover photo on the Loveland Magazine homepage.

Kay Bolin, the 2018 Valentine Lady nominated Giver. Here is the letter she wrote to the selection committee:

Becky Giver, a woman who flies “under the radar” while constantly doing her good and caring deeds in our community. Since Becky has retired, or I should say semi-retired, she has been able to put all that energy into our community.

In addition to being a continued patron for Loveland’s restaurants and businesses, she doesn’t stop there, as she knows it takes work as well as fun to keep a community growing.

Loveland is so lucky to have several non- profit organizations that need good people who are willing to work and not be afraid to get their hands dirty. And speaking of getting your hands dirty, Becky has been involved with the:

City of Loveland Beautification Committee – She has been one of several members who have helped beautify our community. Today she continues to work on some special projects with “Love our Land.” It is so cool to watch Loveland’s renewed interest in planning and planting with the focus on pollinator beds throughout our community.

Becky doesn’t stop with planting; in fact, you have possibly seen her & her husband, Gary, walking on 48 carrying a bag and picking up trash to help once again keep our community beautiful and clean. They have been part of this Adopt a Block program for years.

Becky is also on the board for Loveland Legacy Foundationa 501(c) (3) non-profit charitable organization, with the purpose of improving the community of Loveland, with a common purpose of the betterment of Loveland, now and in the future.

Another not-for-profit organization she is involved with is Loveland Stage Company, as House Manager and ad sales. Like everything she does, she goes far beyond the requirements to ensure comfort and a pleasant experience for the patrons.

Becky has been a volunteer for years and recently has been appointed to be on the Board of Directors for the Loveland Historical Museum, whose mission is to enrich lives and connect our community through diverse arts and history experiences.”

She has also just finished a very productive term as President of the Loveland Woman’s Club, and now serves as Advisor for the next 2-year term.

In her spare time Becky & Gary take care of the bird feeders at the Loveland Nature Preserve

In summary Becky cares about our community and its people, she helps make a better community for all of us and the future generations. Her compassion is contagious, she will make a fun-loving and productive addition to our Valentine Lady sisterhood. Becky, we are thrilled to have you.

  • Meet the next Loveland Valentine Lady

Meet the next Loveland Valentine Lady

Loveland, Ohio – “Jeannie Shumaker embodies and lives all those wonderful characteristics and attributes we use to define the title of Valentine Lady.  And with her lifetime of giving and caring within the Loveland community, she is a most deserving candidate to represent Loveland as the 2021 Valentine Lady,” said Peggy Goodwin in her nomination letter for the 2021 Loveland Valentine Lady. Goodwin was the 2006 Loveland Valentine Lady.

On Tuesday morning this week, the Valentine Ladies met at the Loveland Museum Center to welcome and surprise the 2021 Valentine Lady – Jeannie Shumaker.  (Jeannie Shumaker is in the center photo above.)

Here is the full nomination letter…

If you’ve ever attended an event at the Loveland Museum Center, then you have most certainly met this delightful lady.  And once you’ve met her, Jeannie Shumaker’s warmth and engaging smile makes you feel like you’ve known her forever.  That was my experience a few years ago while volunteering for an event at the museum – both Jeannie and I arrived well before the others; we struck up a conversation and before long were chatting away like old friends while she steered me through the nuances of our tasks at hand.

A lifelong Loveland resident, Jeannie has given of her time and talents to our community in so many ways – without fanfare but accomplishing so many great things along the way.  Jeannie spent 35 years as a Certified Medical Assistant, first with Dr. Sood here in Loveland, then later at Bethesda North.  The care and compassion she devoted to her patients pervades everything she does as evidenced by the many ways she has quietly served the Loveland community.

She gives very generously of her time to the Loveland Museum Center; pick most any event and you’ll find Jeannie’s name within the list of volunteers. And she actively supports the Museum by attending just about every activity and event offered.  She is currently one of the Docents who welcomes visitors to the Museum on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  Over the years, she has also contributed quite a number of artifacts of local significance to the Museum’s collection.

Jeannie is a member of the Loveland Woman’s Club; in the past she has held the position of Treasurer as well as serving on the Ways and Means Committee.  One of her favorite projects was a hugely successful bridal show to raise funds for the scholarship program.  She vividly recalls her home being filled with bridal gowns as she collected items for the event.  She laughingly recalls her employer, Dr. Sood, not scheduling appointments that would conflict with Jeannie’s participation in Woman’s Club meetings!

Jeannie was actively engaged in getting libraries set up at the former Little Miami and Lloyd Mann schools – it requires quite a bit of work to get each book ready to go on the shelf, so this was no small feat.  Once established, she volunteered at those libraries every week helping the children select books and also reading to the kids.  Even today she’s still good at reading a book upside down!

Jeannie also volunteered in the schools, tutoring 1st through 4th graders (mostly little boys) in reading and social studies.  Her purse was always crammed full of socks, gloves and Kleenex to give to the kids who needed them.  She also assisted the school nurse in screening young girls for scoliosis.   And she was one of those treasured “room mothers” that we all fondly remember from our grade school days.

At Loveland United Methodist Church, Jeannie is a member of 2 Bible study groups.  She is also the “snack lady” during Vacation Bible School, coordinating this very popular part of the program. For years in preparation for the church’s annual holiday turkey dinners, Jeannie has baked the pies (from scratch!) to accompany the more than 400 dinners served every year.  And she’s ready to do it again this year!

If you check out Jeannie’s Facebook page, you’ll find no self-promotion there.  Instead her Facebook page is almost exclusively a showcase of dogs and cats available for adoption at area animal shelters.  (But she does slip in an occasional recipe to share with her friends!)  She volunteers weekly at the SPCA in Sharonville. When she signed up to help at the SPCA, 39 of the 40 volunteers specified they wanted to work with the dogs – so tender-hearted Jeannie opted to help with the cats and kittens.  Each week she cleans cages and launders the bedding – but most importantly she helps socialize the animals and assists people in choosing the perfect furry little companion for their families.

Jeannie is also deeply devoted to her family, and her care for them is second to none.  Years ago, while caring for her own family, Jeannie brought her two young nephews to live with her so their parents could focus their time and energy on caring for another young son who was hospitalized due to a serious injury.

Jeannie Shumaker embodies and lives all those wonderful characteristics and attributes we use to define the title of “Valentine Lady.”  And with her lifetime of giving and caring within the Loveland community, she is a most deserving candidate to represent Loveland as the 2021 Valentine Lady.

    Peggy Goodwin

Because of COVID, the schedule of events for the annual kick-off of the formal introduction of the new Valentine Lady and the unveiling of the 2021 Valentine Card at the Loveland Kroger store is a bit up in the air. Details will be announced by the Little Miami River Chamber of Commerce at a later date.

    – 2019 Loveland Valentine Lady Kathryn Lorenz

Loveland, Ohio – “I found out about this while at dinner at the Works on December 9th with my daughter and her family. Santa and Mrs. Claus had just visited the restaurant, to the absolute delight of my 5-year-old grandson”, said Kathryn Lorenz about finding out she would be Loveland’s 2019 Valentine Lady. “So when I heard a little commotion and saw some ladies wearing red, it just never occurred to me what was happening. Several Valentine Ladies and my son appeared at the table and gave me flowers and a balloon and just surprised me completely. My daughter did a really good job helping them surprise me.”

Lorenz is the 33rd Valentine Lady. She has also served on the Loveland Board of Education for the past 26 years, 17 as president. She also serves on the board of directors for the Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Education. The photo album below is from Saturday, January 5 when the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance held a ceremony at the Loveland Kroger officially announcing that Lorenz was the 2019 Valentine Lady and Donna Treinen was the winner of the 2019 Valentine Card design competition.

The Valentine Lady tradition goes back to 1971 when the Loveland Chamber of Commerce created a Valentine postmark. Doris Pfiester, chamber secretary at the time, mailed 1,000 Valentines for Loveland residents that had a special Loveland, Ohio postmark that year and was referred to as the “Valentine Lady” until a formal selection process began in the 1980s. Pfiester was named the very first Valentine Lady in 1992. Today, the Valentine Lady plays an important role in the Chamber’s signature Valentine program, which includes a card design competition, poetry, coloring contests, and visits to students in Pre-K through fourth-grade classrooms and nursing homes throughout the Loveland area. The Chamber re-mails thousands of cards they receive from around the world for people wanting their cards mailed from “Loveland” with the slogan, “There is nothing in the world so sweet as Love”. Chamber president in 1972, Dr. Roland Boike, coined the phrase, inspired by Samual Johnson.

2015 Valentine Lady, Sue Lundy nominated Lorenz.

2015 Valentine Lady, Sue Lundy nominated Lorenz. In her nomination letter, Lundy wrote, “Kathy’s public, professional and private life all demonstrate her commitment to the community of Loveland.” Lundy pointed out Lorenz’s commitment to education saying, “Kathy believes in education from the ground up. She is active in the Ohio Conservation League and encourages and supports excursions and educational experiences for children. She has spent time in our elementary classrooms teaching French, worked with mentor programs, and coordinated the Basic French Program at UC.” Lundy is a former Loveland School teacher.

I am really honored to become a member of this exclusive group. First of all, it is unique for Loveland to have a Valentine Lady and to focus on the thought that we can spread thought of love just because we live in a town called Loveland. – Kathy Lorenz

“If you look at all the accomplished, dedicated women who have already been named Valentine Lady, anyone would be proud to be like them,” Lorenz told Loveland Magazine. “I am especially grateful for Sue Lundy, who nominated me and Pat Furterer, Kay Bolin, and Janis Fogle, who have offered many tips about my role already. All the Ladies have welcomed me warmly.”

Lundy added, “She speaks openly, honestly and with pride of all we hope to offer children in our schools. Kathy loves her family and her community. It is evident in all she has achieved and continues to do. Her positive spirit would be a valuable addition to the Valentine Lady program.”

Lorenz told Loveland Magazine she collects pictures of hearts occurring in nature and heart shaped rocks and hopes to show the children and adults of Loveland that, “We can find hearts in nature and express love every day, not just on Valentines Day.”

During the ceremony at Kroger, Bill Hounshell introduced former Valentine Ladies as Loveland Vice-Mayor Rob Weisgerber presented each with a bouquet of flowers.

  • Meet Kay Bolin: the 2018 Valentine Lady [Q&A and videos]

Meet Kay Bolin: the 2018 Valentine Lady [Q&A and videos]

    by Sam Smith

Loveland, Ohio – On the evening of Tuesday, January 23rd, local volunteer and business owner Kay Bolin was announced as the 2018 Loveland Valentine Lady. Bolin will fill the community-centric roles of Valentine Lady by visiting classrooms, churches and retirement homes and spreading a message of love and kindness. In a Loveland first, she was escorted by local restaurant manager, Cory Partin.

Kay Bolin O’Grady and Cory Partin speak to a class of first graders

“As of Friday, February 9th, Cory and I have visited 4 schools, 56 classes and approximately 1100 students. I spend 15 – 20 minutes in each class and my focus is sharing a story about love and kindness.”

The Valentine Lady program started in 1971, and began the tradition of Loveland postcards with the phrase “There is nothing in this world so sweet as love” which is still used today. That year the first “Valentine Lady” volunteered to handle the postcards, and the position has stuck. Each year, a new Valentine Lady is chosen for their community presence and volunteerism to continue the tradition. This year, the position has been passed along to Kay Bolin.

Kay Bolin presents a story about love and kindness

Watch Bolin’s induction as the 2018 Valentine Lady here:

Kay Bolin-O’Grady is the 2018 Loveland Valentine Lady

Kay Bolin has been the director of marketing and sales at Whistle Stop Clayworks in downtown Loveland since 2009. The 2018 Valentine Lady opened the ceramics teaching studio and gallery with her husband, Tim O’Grady after purchasing an abandoned petroleum distribution business building in Historic Loveland.

Bolin is active with the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance Board Of Directors and a frequent participant at chamber events. She also contributes her time to Loveland Stage Company. Past roles have included the Greater Loveland Historical Society Museum, Loveland Beautification and the Loveland Arts Council (of which Bolin was president for several years). Bolin as awarded the Community Involvement Award by the Chamber of Commerce in 2015.

In a Loveland first, Bolin was escorted by the manager of Tano Bistro & Catering, Cory Partin. “I would like to mention though that this year is the first year the program has a Valentine Lady Escort, Cory Partin is the 2018 Valentine Lady Escort and I am thrilled to have him by my side. We are having a blast and it is so awesome for us to share love and kindness in a community we both love so much,” Bolin claimed.

Kay Bolin poses with Loveland Elementary students. Bolin O’Grady has already spoken to hundreds of students.

    Q&A With Kay Bolin:

Loveland Magazine: How long have you been in Loveland?  What brought you here?

Kay Bolin: I moved to Loveland in 1992 when my job at the time transferred me here from Atlanta.

LM: What was the process that led you to become the 2018 Valentine Lady? How were you nominated?

KB: I was nominated by two dear friends. The process is all letters of nominations, which are due to the LMRCA in early November. They are then reviewed by the Valentine Program Committee which is made up of a representative from the school district, local business, and all previous Valentine Ladies. They vote on who they feel have distinguished themselves by their commitment and involvement in our community. It’s quite an honor to be nominated much less chosen. It was humbling.

LM: For anyone interested in being the 2019 Valentine Lady … what advice would you give?

KB: That’s a little difficult for me to answer as I didn’t plan on being a Valentine Lady– I just love our community and loved being involved… I think that is probably the common thread between most of the Valentines Ladies. And if you are fortunate enough to be chosen, have fun with it and keep in mind the theme of the Valentine Program: There is nothing in this world so sweet as love

LM: Do you think a community can love?

KB:  Yes, I do. I think that Loveland is a very loving community.

LM: What roles does a Loveland valentine lady hold. What have/will you do?

KB: My first schedule is going to various schools (pre-school through 3rd grade) from February 1 – 14. As of Friday, February 9th, Cory and I have visited 4 schools, 56 classes, and approximately 1,100 students. I spend 15 – 20 minutes in each class and my focus is sharing a story about love and kindness. I tell the children a story. Many end up teary-eyed, others confused. But most understand the message.
Another fun role is going to Loveland Health Care and crowning the Valentine King and Queen and visiting the Lodge Retirement Community for cookie decorating. But I am available to all area businesses, schools and nursing homes… just wherever I can share some love and kindness.

Cory Partin and Kay Bolin O’Grady tell a story to a class of elementary school students. The 2018 Valentine Lady plans to retell the story at the The Little Miami River Chamber Alliance Valentine breakfast.

The Little Miami River Chamber Alliance Valentine Breakfast was on February 9 at the Oasis Conference Center at 8 AM. At the breakfast, it was announced that Kay Bolin is the 2018 Loveland Valentine Lady, following in the footsteps of Carol Williams. Poetry contest winners read their poems with past Valentine ladies in attendance.
